PFF: Top 10 True Freshman after Week 4 (Rashan Gary makes appearance)
3. Rashan Gary, Edge, Michigan 81.7
Adding Gary to an already-loaded defensive line seemed unfair for Michigan and Gary has already shown why he was so highly touted. He’s cracked the defensive line rotation with 136 snaps, fifth-most on the team, doing his best work in the run game at 87.4 while picking up two sacks, three QB hits, and six hurries on 73 pass rushes. His 13.3 pass rush productivity leads all true freshmen edge rushers.

2. Ed Oliver, DT, Houston 82.0

What does D-line depth look like next year?
Gary, Hurst, Mone, Marshall...Dwumfor...Winovich... who else am I missing?
Should I be worried about depth? I'm a little worried about depth.

What do you mean?
Aren't we talking about on what one should shit? Not 'to where.'
Anyway, 'on _____' is a prepositional phrase, so it should be 'on him,' 'on her,' 'on whom,' 'on me,' as opposed to 'on she,' 'on he,' 'on who,' and 'on I.'

I like the idea of him as a space/person eater but with Breden and Kalis leaving that means a couple open guard spots.
Bredeson goes to LG or kicks out to RT, that could mean 2 open spots at OG.

We need to clone Onwenu. Think about it nearly 750 pounds of lineman.

Nah, he looked pretty slow going around those Penn State offensive lineman. No lateral movement or quickness of any kind. Still needs another year.

About 95% of the time, we'd be hyping a starting line of Gary/Hurst/Mone/Winovich as devastating, regardless of their backups. We've just been spoiled the last two seasons.

Personally, don't think it's as terrifying as some believe. There's also the Johnsons, Kemp and true freshman next year. It's not going to be the world beaters that we have now, but we have never had this much depth in memory. Anyways, I trust the coaching staff is attuned to future depth needs. Can't imagine Harbaugh is light on details in this respect

Very interesting that the top 2 are DTs, when that position is one of the hardest for freshmen to have an impact.

The learning isn't as tough as the physical requirements of the position. Standing up to college level double teams is not easy to do, especially as a freshman where you are likely undersized or have bad weight.
September 28th, 2016 at 10:30 AM ^
he's been lining up at end and not DT but I see your point.

The simplest explanation would be that PFF grades aren't perfectly calibrated and may not be great for comparing across position groups (e.g. Brian's UFR where DL always have higher magnitude games than LBs).

Way to go Gary!
Has anyone thought about how crazy good this DL would be if Willie Henry came back for his senior season? Unreal.

Henry is palying himself into the top 2 rounds, easily.

I didn't see Nick Bosa anywhere on that list? Didn't Buckeye's say they would take him over Gary, 7 days a week and twice on Sundays?
September 28th, 2016 at 11:11 AM ^
They constantly said that and the fact that Nick Bosa was going to come in better than his brother.......Delusional!!
