At a certain point the talent gap (this will be noticeable vs. ND for example) and middle of the pack recruiting start to show. They developed some nice NFL players (Conklin comes to mind) but Manny Machado is not striking fear into your defense...

Depth on defense isn't what it has been and O'Connor is not great.

They will do a lot of "learning" against Notre Dame in two weeks...
