O'Korn or Speight: who ya got?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Stunned we haven't had this thread yet.

I say O'Korn. The mobility is what gives him the edge for me. Rudock had mobility last year, but O'Korn is even quicker.

Would it be out there to think that we could TRY a little read option stuff with Peppers at RB?

I like dual threats in Harbaugh's offense. We have a multi-talented backfield with Peppers and Chesson as options as well. Expect of lot of moving parts and confusing keys. Big time rushing attack this year.

O'Korn. Harbaugh sees something in him that he likes, ala Rudock. He will say there is big separation and O'Korn will contend for Big Ten player of the year.

When you say "who ya got" is that asking for predictions or rooting interest?

Hopefully the former (even though the entire collective of us is 0.001% as qualified as Harbaugh to decide) because I've always felt that rooting for a particular QB to win the starter's derby is silly.

Does it really matter?

Because Harbaugh I'm pretty confident in whomever wins the job. Of course he would have to continue to preform to keep his job. Meritocracy at its best

O'Korn.  I get the statements about Speight as he may be less turnover prone and that would work well with the defense we have.  But, I don't see Harbaugh as playing not to lose.   I think he'll take O'Korn with the bigger play potential and mold him into someone who also doesn't make a lot of mistakes.

Harbaugh will take the best clay and make him into a QB.

well.... if we have the first 3 games to get it figured out, as everyone is saying, start Peters. why not let him get his lumps early while the defense can carry them through. Peters is going to be the starter eventually, may as well let him have it now. I know, I know, "can't start a freshman when a national title is the goal...." argument applies, but hey, if the d is good enough, Peters can have the time to get better throughout the season. tough going into east Lansing and Columbus as a freshman, but he could be dialed in and rolling by then.

We know Peters will be the starter eventually?  Um, no, and that's not even in the coming years, let alone this season.  The earliest he'll start might be 2019 if he can't beat out a 5th year senior Speight in 2018 and we'll have a stable of younger, talented QB's by then that he'll have to beat.

Really, truly, I'm fine with whomever Harbaugh anoints, but... well, technically, if I'm not mistaken, he chose O' Korn first. Even before Mr. Jake "Stop-gap" Rudock, who arrived because John had to sit out the 2015 season. Transfer or not, I want to believe there was a reason O' Korn was Harbaugh's first hand-picked QB.

I want it to be OKorn. I want him to separate during fall camp and really show that he's the best of the bunch. I want him in there because he can run. In this day and age of college football a running quarterback is extremely dangerous. He's a much better runner than Speight

O'Korn, I say because I see him as having higher level physical QB skills (arm strength, accuracy) that are limited because of mental errors. Enter QB coaching god Harbaugh and the ceiling for the offense is much higher once those mental mistakes are inevitably eradicated.

Speight:

He's mentally tough, he's a guy the team will want to follow, and he makes less mistakes than O'Korn which will be perfect to pair with Michigan's dominant defense.

On the spring game, I have a feeling JO'K was told to make some runs, perhaps as a way to exercise that as another option rather than trying to make a bad decision/throw.

I have no inside knowledge on this, it just appeared that way vs. what his Houston film looked like.

I'm good either way.

If Harbaugh asked Gumby to put on a winged helmet and lead the team, I would trust him to do a good job.  Also, have you seen that guy's spin move?

Was the QB O'Korn lost his job in Houston to that great or was there an issue between coach and O'Korn. I just don't understand especially since he was a freshmen starter and then lost his job.

that ended in the coach being fired for trying to do their best Hoke/Borges impersonation. It's obvious something was working in O'Korn's freshman season resulting in tremendous production on his part coupled with a very low turnover margin. It's obvious O'Korn has the goods; that can be assumed merely by sliding in tape of Rudock from last season. I don't know if Jake was the record setting qb at the high school they both attended, but whoever it was, O'Korn now holds them, just as he does at UH for a freshman QB.

I'm guessing the OC John had his freshman season was offered a better job because Houston changed OCs his sophomore year and his philosophy was to do the opposite of whatever the D was lined up to prevent(????). Isn't that what all offenses do? Well anyway, it didn't work. If they tried to run, they were stuffed. It they tried to pass, a pick or sack seemed to be the result and w/in weeks O'Korn had more picks than he did his entire freshmen year and was replaced as the starter. Some here have seen him and based on what I've read, they saw a qb who throws a very nice ball. Like I said, he ran the same offense as Jake, but did so at a higher level.

He needs to shake off a lot of rust and this is where Wilton got a jump on him. Although he only runs a near 5 sec 40, his athletic ability is good and he was able to run the scout team every week w/o worrying about putting a faster player into to simulate a running qb, if that's what we faced that week. Wilton, at the same time, was learning the offense and taking second team snaps. This was a wise move for the obvious reasons and made the race tight this year. I don't think it will take O'Korn long to get his groove back, just countless repititions and, according to him, he's been working his ass off.

It turned out good for the team, Wilton has shown a day/night difference in both confidence and play and based on the reports from the spring game, John wasn't far behind then.

Doesn't bother me whoever it is, because Harbaugh will play whoever gives Michigan the best chance to win.

If you made me guess, it'll be Speight, but I personally don't mind whoever starts.

I say O'Korn. Something has to give if he had 3,000+ yard game freshman year. I ultimately would love to see Morris come out of nowhere and be the starter. He embodies Michigan. Wish he would be awesome.

Good question, i should have been more clear.  I did mean for this season.  Doesn't he have one more year of eligibility left?

He's admirably stuck with Michigan through the Brady Hoke years, but I would think given the depth chart and incoming QBs he may want to consider what's best for him at this point.

He will be a redshirt junior, so two more years including this season. I have no idea what the rules are about when you can transfer before a season starts, but if he doesn't have his degree yet I think he would stay and get it, since he would have to sit out a year to play just one more year anyway.

Doctor Wolverine

August 5th, 2016 at 2:44 PM ^

I think he actually already has his degree, so he could have transferred this year and still had two years to play without sitting out a year. I have zero inside info, but if I had to guess, I would predict that he may have some interest in coaching down the road. That would explain sticking with Michigan and Harbaugh rather than leaving. Of course many other possible explanations as well: great school, likes his teammates, wants to be part of something special, has a shot at playing time, etc.

I'm going with O'Korn as well. He has the higher ceiling and the mobility. We have 7 games to get him up to speed and connecting with the receivers. Speight is the perfect low risk back-up with an extra year in the system.

I think we're about to reap the benefits of having a QB whisperer coach. I really don't think it matters. We have competent QBs. Depth at the position. And an endless stream of blue chip QBs on the horizon waiting to be the next Harbaugh success story.
If I had to pick one though I'm going to go out on a limb and say J O'K. His mobility is something that a guy like Wilton Speight can't duplicate. No matter how much the practice.
Either way tho....I'm happy. If Speight has that steely eyes look and can stand in the pocket and pick D's apart...then I could care less about his mobility or lack there of.
