Hackett Working on Longterm Extension for Harbaugh (Almost Done)
http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/201…
In an interview with The Detroit News at halftime of Wednesday's Minnesota-Michigan game at Crisler Center, Hackett said he's working on future football schedules, finalizing the details of the $169-million Nike contract and finishing up the long-term contract for football coach Jim Harbaugh.
"About done," Hackett said of the Harbaugh pact, which originally was for seven years and about $5.7 million annually. "We should have news on that soon.

Will this quell the constant hot air from reporters that Harbaugh is headed back to the NFL?
Seeing as they've managed to ignore all the evidence to the contrary so far, I'm guessing the answer is no.

The /s was certainly not needed in this case. Anyone with 5% of a brain knows there's sarcasm present.

No, its the Colts because Luck is too good to not coach, plus he coached him at Stanford, people forget that. AND he definitely wants to move closer to that Crean feller.

back to the NFL in the long distant future, there are alot of teams and places he goes to before he goes to the Lions.

because contracts have buy-outs and any good lawyer can get you out of one. I'm hoping Harbaugh stays forever, but this will never stop the NFL reporters from making baseless comments. Nor would it stop NFL GM's or owners from contacting Harbaugh's agent. I'm hoping Harbaugh never gets that itch to return to the NFL again!
January 21st, 2016 at 9:11 AM ^
Exactly. All longer-term contracts do is give your legal team a better idea of how to get you out of them with the least cost whenever you want to go...
January 21st, 2016 at 10:04 AM ^
Right, any lawyer can get you out of a buyout, but that doesn't mean it's cheap or easy. If Harbaugh wanted to go back to the NFL in the next couple years, he most likely would have stuck with the contract he signed a year ago, rather than escalate the level of commitment that the lawyers would need to unwind.
January 21st, 2016 at 11:04 AM ^
We just have to convince Harbaugh to fire his agent so the NFL GMs won't have an avenue for contacting Harbaugh. Problem solved!
That was almost too easy.
January 21st, 2016 at 11:44 AM ^
Yeah who needs an agent when they're at their destination?
January 21st, 2016 at 9:07 AM ^
No. Of course not. Because you are relying on NFL reporters.

He was not linked to any of the jobs that opened after the regular season this year. Maybe they're starting to get it through their thick skulls that he's not leaving anytime soon. Now in 4-6 years after Michigan has won a NC, the buzz will get very loud.
January 21st, 2016 at 10:06 AM ^
He was speculatively linked to the Colts job when it looked like Pagano would be fired.

current position. Countless photos of a happy looking coach. I think he is loving being in AA, and plans to be there a looonngg time.

I want to party with Hackett. Just once.
It's obvious he's some type of warlock.

It's the buyout that people will pay attention to, right now it's basically nothing. Need a hefty buyout to keep those rumors at bay.
January 21st, 2016 at 11:15 AM ^
Not unless Harbaugh's buy-out is so gargantuan that NFL teams wouldn't be willing to pony up the $. So, basically this will have little impact on quelling future rumors.

They'll spin this into Harbaugh trying to extract $1B over 25 years from an NFL team where he can be coach, GM, owner, as well as be NFL Commish.
'Cause, you know, he's willing to leave us hanging in the breeze since the recruiting is wearing him thin.
Edit: But good on Hackett - he's played this thing so well, he does deserve a statue.
January 21st, 2016 at 9:29 AM ^
I hope he stays at Michigan forever but I could get behind him going to the NFL as Commissioner... I've been (almost) completely NFL free the past year or two and won't be back until Goodell is out.

Damn it, I want this man to stay as athletic director for the long haul.

If we start settling for excellence people are just going to keep expecting more and more! We ought to have just hired Greg Schiano when we had the chance. Then we wouldn't have to worry about all the pressure that comes with fielding a competitive team!

With an ND fans perspective I can't see how you can say that? The guy has been a winner everywhere he has gone. While this year was taste of things to come clearly after the OSU debacle he has his work cut out for him. I have no doubt it will get done.
Its like people on ND message boards who want Kelly gone. Who can you think of right now that will come in and do a better job? Like I mean seriously consider coming in. Its not Saban, Meyer or anyone of their ilk. So who? If your head coach isn't solid right now you'll be flapping in the wind for years. There just isn't that many elite coaches out there.
