I just heard the news and glad I wasn't the duplicate post. I give Spike a lot of credit for his determination. His success in basketball at Michigan exceed most of our wildest expectation and he never displayed any sense of fear or determination on the court where his talent was often overmatched. A fractured hip is a serious injury and his attempt a comeback was more surprising than his decision not to play. I wish him the best in his future but I have no worries about him being successful in the next step in his life.

Beilein and Michigan basketball wouldn't have any luck at all.

The basketball gods apparently punish you for your virtue.

Clearly one's health comes first, but this is a rather sad day for Michigan hoops all the same - so many great Spike memories come to mind now, not the least of which involve a certain game in 2013 where he was simply on another plane. Really enjoyed watching him play and I wish him nothing but the best and hopefully he can get where he would like to be healthwise.

This one hurts....hate to see it end this way for Spike. Great kid who deserves all the best in life.
And if I'm ever in a foxhole, Spike is the kind of kid I'd like to be there with.

I was at the NCG in 2013 when a little unknown freshman from Indiana made it to the big time by scoring 17 points in the first half. He will forever be remembered for moments like that among the Wolverine faithful.
A sad day to be a Michigan hoops fan that's for sure.

Given the timing and his PT this year, doesn't this put him in play for a 5th year?

"This has been the toughest decision I have ever had to make," said Albrecht. "After taking a hard look at what is best for me, and this team, I will be stepping away from the game that has meant so much to me.This is a career ender, not a season ender.

Sad that he ran into something he can't overcome, but there can be no doubt that he'll be successful in life.

Spike is the definition of grit. I will never forget that amazing first half he had in the National Championship game.

Grit and a great personality. Some guys are grit and mad - Spike looks like he enjoys life.

Just going to watch whatever Spike highlights I can find on repeat today.

We have all enjoyed watching you become a true Michigan Man. I was at the Final Four in Atlanta and it was amazing to see him light it up. If only we had been more aggressive with how we used Trey Burke...

WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will forever remember his journeys amongst the trees, lofted awkard layup bank shots, deeper threes than Trey Burke, and the most swagged out backup PG out there.

This seems like such a bad dream. The guy was by no means a favorite around MGOBLOG when he committed, but through hard work and clutch moments, he is probably one of the all time favorites around these parts. Thank you for everything you did for Michigan basketball, Spike!

This sucks. Feel bad for the kid and for the team. This season is disappointment after disappointment. Hopefully they can turn things around and get some positive momentum going.
