This.
Rajai is looking at 35 here soon, and his biggest asset is his legs. Those legs are going to be going soon, and I don't want to be holding his next contract when that happens.

that we got rid of Ian Krol.

the Krol Show sucked.

Nice to see him come back. I remember when I used to totally dork out to the MLB draft and there was quite a discussion about whether Maybin or Andrew McCutchen would be the better outfielder. What's my point? I don't know. Can Tigers haz McCutchen?

Well, there's talk about bringing Doug Fister back on a one-year deal...
November 20th, 2015 at 5:42 PM ^
Is there something wrong with Fister? I mean, why would he sign a one-year deal when pitchers are getting long time contracts worth millions.
November 20th, 2015 at 5:46 PM ^
November 20th, 2015 at 6:06 PM ^
He had an awful year and was dropped from the rotation.
November 20th, 2015 at 6:20 PM ^
he would be best served to sign a one-year deal, hope he bounces back, then cash in the following year.
assuming he is healthy, i would take a chance on him as the #5 starter. i read that his fastball was down to 86 last year. that won't cut it. if it's back near 90, i would take him.

Last year--when he was hurt--yes.
2014 16-6 with a killer 2.41 era
2012 & 2013 solid mid 3 ERAs for the Tigers
November 20th, 2015 at 8:04 PM ^
Fister 2014:
2.41 ERA (4th in the NL) 1.079 WHIP (5th in the NL) 4.08 K/BB
How the hell is that "awful"?
I swear a lot of the people that comment on baseball around here don't actually watch ANY baseball.
Yeah Fister had a poor, injury shortered 2015. His 2014 however was far from "awful". It was actually pretty fantastic.
November 20th, 2015 at 9:56 PM ^
He didn't just have a minor injury.
They were looking at him for TJ surgery.
And he hasn't exactly been durable over his career. Only 2 years in his 7 year career did he make 30+ starts or top 175 innings.
Fine pitcher....if he's healthy. And given his history, that's an awful big "if".

Maybin had a very good year with the Braves and was part of trade talks at the deadline. Thought they should've moved him. Once the Braves added Mallex Smith to the 40 man roster and couldn't move Bourn or Swisher Maybin was the odd man out. This no suprise from a Braves point of view. Also Roger McDowell is one of the best pitching coaches in baseball if he can fix Jim Johnson and got value for him along with Grilli before he got hurt.
November 21st, 2015 at 9:11 AM ^
The Braves got Cameron Maybin as kind of an afterthought in the Upton trade, and Cameron ended up having (for him) a pretty good year at the plate and on the basepaths, leading the team in steals. The Braves have freed up more salary money and acquired yet another couple (journeyman?) pitchers whom, as you say, pitching coach McDowell might be able to improve.
But the main reason for the trade seems to be that now the young GM (and Notre Dame grad) John Coppolella has more pitching arms and cash with which to work a trade or two. Maybe he can even bring in a couple guys who can actually hit the damn ball. As things now stand, Freddie Freeman, Markakis, the still "unproven Cuban" Olivera, and "ancient AJ" Pierzynski are about it as far as actual hitters are concerned.
Coppolella's really on the spot to deliver that promised "dream team" they're talking about having by the time they move into their new stadium in 2017.

Maybe we can catch lightening in a bottle, kind of like Torii Hunter. I just hope for more solid pitching.

adding serviceable players on the cheap

not a bad deal, didnt give up much and he acually has some upside still. had some decent numbers last year.

10hrs 23sbs in 2015 are solid. .327OBP w/ 45 walks - pretty ok'ish. He'll be 29 around opening day - prime to starting downward slope. Maybe Al sees something in Maybin. After his coup landing JD I'm inclined to give Al benefit of the doubt on guys seen with potential. Maybe he knows how to coax it out. I'll reserve judgement on this deal and will update this post in July.

Offensive numbers were good, but his defense was last year was awful.

For the Safety Dance reference. Strobel was negative-11 when that song came out. Seriously, how does Strobel even know that song? When in his lifetime has Safety Dance even made a blip on the cultural radar?
Wild.

that reason was Miguel Cabrera. We didn't really "give up on him".
That being said, he never panned out.
November 20th, 2015 at 6:24 PM ^
he was probably the #1 player in the tigers organization at the time of the trade. but he was traded along with a couple others for the best hitter in the game. i would make that trade again in a heartbeat, even if maybin turned out to be a perennial all star.

Circle of life. Welcome back, Cameron.
November 20th, 2015 at 5:58 PM ^
No stick. Advanced metrics say his defense last year fell off a cliff. I guess he has some speed, so at least there is that.
Little hit, poor field CF. Not exactly a roster-maker. Hopefully the defense was bad due to an injury or something and was a 1-year thing.
November 20th, 2015 at 6:35 PM ^
must be taken with a grain of salt. way too subjective. he is a prime example of it. it is silly to think a person's D would fluctuate that much from one year to the next. he has been a plus defender his whole career. he had more assists (7) than he's ever had; and only 3 errors. he certainly didn't lose all of his speed.
that said, he's i'm guessing he gets about 200 ABs in CF and 200 ABs in LF.
November 20th, 2015 at 8:13 PM ^
And the defensive metrics say he peaked defensively in 2011 and has been sliding since. They had him ranked as the 2nd worst every-day CF in all of baseball last year. That's not good. Only Pagan graded out worse.
November 20th, 2015 at 8:34 PM ^
baseball players don't get bad at defense in one year. those defensive stats are highly subjective. speed has to do with range and he clearly still has that. look at his steals and steal %.
and he has a great arm for a CF. so he had 7 assists and likely prevented many more runs by not having guys test his arm.
November 20th, 2015 at 8:50 PM ^
His arm has never been anything special. Pretty average arm.
I agree that usually you don't see players falling off a cliff defensively when they are under 30 years old like this. Perhaps he had nagging injuries that sapped his defensive abilities last year. It doesn't take much to bring a CF down.

With this news I am ready to declare the Tigers the winner of the Cabrerra trade.
November 20th, 2015 at 7:11 PM ^
i wouldn't mind getting him back too.

He makes 7 million in 2016. Holy Toledo. I daresay MLB has an issue when Cameron Maybins make 7 million per year. There was an article on 538 how Bryce Harper's 2015 season was worth 75 million dollars.
November 20th, 2015 at 7:21 PM ^
It's fine. He's got some speed, but it feels like a platoon situation.
