Possible football staff hire
Some SEC insider sites are getting the vapors with whispers that Jim Harbaugh will be hiring Charles W Flanagan HS (Pembroke Pines, FL) head coach Devin Bush, Sr. to a recruiting position for the state of Florida, akin to Chris Partridge's role as New Jersey caporegime. via @RivalsWoody on this podcast

I actually asked this last year - why UM doesnt have a 20 man crew out there working the recruiting trails with satellite "offices" buried throughout the south and west coast.
So technically there is a limit of how many people can have direct contact with recruits. But I guess what Harbaugh is showing is you can have a broader recruiting "department" per se. But no matter what only X people can have direct contact with recruits.

I have read, but can't remember where, that Partridge might be an actual position coach next year. Like if Fisch leaves for example

Well, he was one of the most successful HS FB coachs in NJ. I also heard that Flood didn't want to hire him because he saw him as a threat to his job down the road. You know... like the assumption that Hoke was hesistant to hire Doug Nussmeier because he was going to take his job, etc. (not sure if you remember all that message board talk from a year and a half ago).

Yeah this almost feels like a "tryout" for a position on the staff if and when one opens up. DJ Durkin leaves and you need a linebackers coach? Well hello, ex-NFL player whose ability to watch film, recruit, and handle program administrative responsibilities I have already evaluated and with whom I already have a relationship.

Don't kid yourself. The money is A LOT BETTER. Coaching might be a passion, but if you can land a position at a major university making three, four, five times what you are making coaching hs ball....you take said position. Positions like this can lead to other coaching doors being opened as well. If you are a high school coach wanting to get into the college coaching game. This is a great door to have opened for you.

I have no doubt the money is better, but Partridge is making $80k. That won't be 3, 4, 5* what a HS teacher/coach is making.

I think that it makes sense as a hire. Is it targeting a certain player? Yeah. But you could say that Chris Partridge was hired with the intentions of targeting a certain player too. How has that worked out? It seems like it has worked out pretty well. Not just with said targeted player, but also many other recruits from New Jersey so far. The big question for me is can the recruiter do more than just go after the targeted player. Partridge has killed it in NJ so far and it may only get better. Bush Sr. has a better resume than Partridge and would be a huge asset in the state of Florida. Does the family member thing seem a little skivy? Yeah, a little. I do think that Bush Sr. will earn his paychecks though. I think that it would be a great hire.

If you can't beat them, join them. This happens all the time. How do you think Hugh Freeze went from high school coach in Memphis to Ole' Miss Head Coach? He developed Michael Oher (among others) and followed him.

Same with Gus Malzahn.

what a number of programs have been doing for years. Michigan resisted doing them because "they are Michigan"

Love it. All the better if it helps land Devin Jr. and makes the competition squirm.

You know the genius aspect of this, on JH's part, is it frees up some of his time. He can turn over many hours of travel/face time to geographic specialists who bring the recruits to him. In other words he gets to spend more time planning, teaching and running his organization.
Are other programs like OSU, Texas, Alabama, et al doing similar things or is JH breaking ground yet again?
The other observation I have on this, which has been noted before, is that many/most/all? positions are being created for family members of prospects. I'm not criticizing or lauding this but simply sharing in what others have observed.
November 5th, 2015 at 1:34 PM ^
but I'm not sure how many "recruiting coordinators" they have. I don't think this is an easy question to answer, as searching for Chris Partridge on MGoBlue doesn't yield his bio.

I support the notion of Harbaugh as head of the five families.

I'd be cool with Harbaugh running OCP.

I'm sure this has something to do with the fact that Harbaugh plans to bolt for the Colts to coach his former NFL team and protige QB Andrew Luck. Makes too much sense! Thank you ESPN for this wonderful insight!

Fair or not, we're gonna get roasteeeeeed for this in the national media.
November 5th, 2015 at 1:55 PM ^
there was no roasting for Partridge or Finotti. Bush is as qualified as either of them. he's a stud HS coach moving up in the ranks. chill out
November 5th, 2015 at 2:35 PM ^
I'm chill. I don't care. In fact, I'm willing to push the envelope farther with respect to things like this, because I don't see any moral harm in it.
But we're gonna get roasted for it.

If the media jumps on this as a story, it would be because it involves Harbaugh and he generates clicks and views. Bush Sr.'s resume is impressive...more impressive than Sean Patterson's resume and he was hired for a similar position at Ole Miss, where his brother Shea eventaully verbaled to. The media hasn't given Ole Miss any grief for doing so.

Nice strategic hire if true. Just look what it has done for us in NJ.
Now......who should we hire from California?

Looks like Clint Brewster (a Michigan reporter) just put in a crystal ball pick for FSU...
I don't have 24/7 insider, so I'm not sure why.
