Some Sam Webb tidbits from this morning's show

Submitted by Dawkins on

-We should be on commit watch this weekend. He wouldn't say who but sounded pretty confident there's a very high chance one recruit in particular plans to commit

-Chatsports is a joke. They literally have zero sources and just make shit up. Sam wouldn't even say their name on the radio. He just referred to them as the joke site peddling the made up Kareem Walker story

-Michigan is not pursuing Khalid Kareem. He was being looked at as a buck or DE but Michigan has Carlos Kemp higher on the boards at buck and Gary higher at DE (obvs) and theyre in good position to land both.

Ugh. Am I the only one that does not want Nordin?  Dude made that derptastic plane video - "coming home" to Penn St. - then changes his mind?

Just seems like a head case.......

And let's not forget that lots of people on this site blasted him for that video at the time. Except, most, it seems, have fogotten now that he might commit to us. Fickle bunch.

Did Sam say what class 16' or 17' we should be on commit watch for? If it is 17' I would say Kurt Taylor. Idk about 16', unless Lavert Hill or Quinn Nordin make the flip from Penn State.

He has played a lot of DE at camps, etc.  Also, he has good quickness so DE is definitely a possibility.  From what I have read, if he has one weakness, it's his technique at DT (obviously can be coached up on that so he's still #1 on the boards) so that makes DE (at least at the start) even more realistic.  Kind of like Willie Henry at DE but with more quickness.

Since Durkin/Harbaugh are believers in more of a 3-4 than a 4-3, they're using Willie Henry as a strongside end in a 3-4 look. On some plays, they'll move Henry inside to rush the passer to get a little more quickness on the field. Gary is a guy who can do both of those things (come off the edge and rush inside). He's not a true speed rusher like a Dwight Freeney or Jevon Kearse, but he's quick enough to give tackles some problems with his combination of strength and speed.

I think he would absolutely play as a freshman. But assuming everyone gets/stays healthy, we'll have a very full front seven next year. Nobody in the front four graduates except Mario Ojemudia (and Michigan is supposedly aiming for a waiver to get him back for 2016).

And moving Gary to a DE spot, that would be an extremely crushing rush defense without losing too much pass rush (or any at all).  Moving him to DT bringing in more speed rush ends would enable an extremely effective pass rush.

The ability to move Gary in or out based on obvious pass/rush downs enables Michigan to have an unbelieveable 3 man line on any down and distance.

The defense we are in a lot is basically a 4-2-5, with our BUCK (Ojemudia-->RJS) standing and moving around. This shifting can turn the defense from looking like a 4-2-5 to a 3-3-5 at times and a 3-4 at others. However, no matter what look we are, our line personnel is generally that of a 3-4 DL: two athletic DT's and a monster NG. However, because of our multiplicity, at times those DT's (DT in body, DE in scheme) have to play anywhere from a 3 (outside shade on G) to a 5 (outside shade on T). Henry is strong enough to maul anyone, but he is also athletic enough that he is not a pass rush laibility when he is in a 5 against more athletic Tackles. Rashan Gary already has these traits in spades. He is Henry's size running a 4.7 40. He is more than athletic enough to play the 5 and strong/explosive enough probably to play a 0 if we asked him to, but definitely to play a 3 or 2i (inside shade on G). It has been proved on the field for us that if you have a mammoth who is a non-negative pass rusher, good things can come from playing him at our DE spot. Gary is basically what Henry and Wormley are now, but 4 years younger and faster than both. So you can see why coaches drool over him.

Edit: Magnus had a much more succinct response than I, don't bother reading.

It wouldn't be a surprise if he started at DE and moved inside later. I don't think they can recruit as if Gary's in the bag. He's going to be announcing late. We appear to still be recruiting other DEs and DTs. I think either another DT or DE + Gary would work just fine.

theyre recruiting gary at DL, not specifically DE or DT.  im sure hes #1 on their board at DE and DT.  hes the most talented prospect in the country, versatile enough that theyd rotate him around and sort it out if/when he arrives on campus.  which is a great approach as im sure hes been watching the current DL move all over the line and make plays.

totally different prospect and much different situation but they viewed malik mcdowell in similar manner just as general DL - maybe hed play DT, maybe DE, they just want him on their DL.  and as talented as mcdowell was, gary is head and shoulders better, both now and projecting forward as a prospect.  hes obviously a big dude yet still extremely explosive

Penn St. is a good school, with a good coach

He may not want to play in his brothers shadow

Penn St. has a good defense, too

He may want a different experience.

Don't get me wrong I hope he comes to Michigan, but I'm not going to hold any recruits decisions against him, there's always an argument to be made either way.

I wonder if part of it isn't just not being in his brother's shadow but more being wanted. You know, I wouldn't want to go somewhere just because my sibling is there or expected to go there and not given any further mind. If that makes any sense.

He committed to Penn State a month after Harbaugh was hired and during that time, Harbaugh was pretty much entirely focused on last year's class, so I would imagine that that had no effect. His impression of Michigan was a Michigan team that was not very good.

There was a lot of talk about Michigan not being in heavy contact with him until recently and his interest in Michigan seems to have picked up as Michigan has proven to be good. I think we'll eventually see a commitment, but right now, he has no reason to decommit from Penn State.
