Game-Day Weather Update

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

I wanted to give an update to the Board regarding Saturday's weather.  I just received a phone call from MGoKid today.  She just issued a "No Fly Zone" for all Military Aircraft for the Carolina's.  She suspects this "No fly Zone" will grow as the week progresses.  This storm is gaining strength.

Now her forecast is slightly different from the Hurricane Center; however, she says the rain total will increase in the DC area.  She maintains her original forecast that the center of circulation will remain off the coast due to the High Pressure system in-land.  So the heavy thunderstorms should not affect the coast.

Her prediction is there will be very limited lightening, if any.  However, 6" of rain from this storm is likely.

I sure hope they don't move the game to noon... The wife and her family are all Sparties so I will be at the noon kickoff in East Lansing and am planning on being home by 6pm to catch the U of M game with buddies. This would grealty throw a kink into my plans.

MGoKids forecast says the lightening will stay off shore.  The feeder bands will bring the rain. Since this is only a Cat 1, there will be limited action.  However the rain will be 6"+ for DC.

Since MD has artificial turf, the rain should not affect the field much.  The Game-Day experience will be aweful.

My favorite games that I played in were during bad weather.  Something fun about just buckets and buckets of rain.  I couldn't imagine tailgating would be the much fun, but something about saying "F* it, I'm all in," makes the actual stadium more fun, as well.

This is where I get confused about all this talk about moving the game.  The hurricane itself is not going to be in the DC area anywhere near game time.  Not even close.

So the issue is just wind and rain with no lightning.  They have dozens of games every year with wind and rain and no lightning.  They don't ever cancel / move them.

Is this just people blowing smoke or is there some actual plan to move the game for logistic reasons . . . so that people are not still in the area Sunday or Monday?

The NWS site more or less agrees - the strike probability cone for Joaquin right now puts landfall at Monday but also puts suburban DC in the risk area for tropical storm force winds. The coastal flooding advisories are already being posted up and down the DelMarVa and surrounding areas as well. We might miss the worst and play the game, but hopefully Michigan gets the heck out afterwards, from the look of things.

Not for weather, but the entire 1918 season was shortened due to the influenza epidemic.

Was supposed to be an 8-game season but 3 games were cancelled including a showdown with Minnesota.

Michigan practiced at night the entire season because it was thought it was less of a risk at that time of day.

The term MGoKid makes it sound like she's 6 years old, but based on the rest of the paragraph I'm going to guess that's not the case.

I'm planning on taking a bus Friday night. If Michigan fans can make it in to DC, regardless of whether the game is moved to an earlier time or not, I actually see the weather giving us more of a homefield advantage. I imagine a lot of Maryland fans would just stay home if the weather is bad and they're expecting a loss. Michigan fans? Well we're here, what else are we gonna do?

is a SSgt in the USAF.  She is a Weather Forecaster and is stationed in Warner Robbins AFB. She has responsibility for the entire East Coast for all Military Flights.

One of her primary responsibilities is Hurricanes on the East Coast, among other things.  High Winds and F-22s do not mix very well.  So she has to issue warnings a few days in advance so they can get pilots to get the birds out of harms way.

Obviously growing up in SE Michigan, she has attended many games with Pops growing up. She even had aspirations of playing in the MMB.  Her favorite memory is watching her first "Cake" formation at the Iowa Game in 1997.

Her Commander is a huge Georgia BullDog fan and Alum so they go back and forth.  He does not care if she calls me while she is on duty if there is anything special, especially if its gameday.

She was on duty during the Western game a few years ago and told us to vacate the Big House, which we did. We were on I-94 when all hell broke loose.  She is my savior for all things weather.

It's not really the hurricane that will bring the rain from Thursday through Saturday, but the stalled front that has moisture streaming up it.  Part of a large-scale pattern setting up through the week and weekend.

High pressure in the western Atlantic is forecast to further slow the progression of an already wobbly weather system dropping SE from TN into GA.  Meanwhile, Joaquin will squeeze north between these two features.  This combines a lot of moisture and energy together somewhere...stay tuned.

Basically there is a trough moving through the southeast.  A front will stall and this will transport tropical moisture through the southeast and mid-Atlantic into the northeast from Thursday through Saturday.  This is not directly related to Joaquin.  Meanwhile there is a high pressure over the western Atlantic and Joaquin looks to get squeezed up in between these two features, eventually merging with the frontal system.

Current projections would have the first effects of Joaquin felt Sunday afternoon/evening.

DO NOT CANCEL anything as of today.  This storm is highly unpredictable.  If she stalls, then the Saturday night will still be good but getting out on Sunday will be a trick.  If the storm increases speed, then it will be bad for Saturday.

As of now, MGoKid is forecasting rain for Saturday night and getting progressively worse through Tuesday.  So if you have a late flight on Saturday, you will get wet at the game but you will still make it.
