Game-Day Weather Update

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

I wanted to give an update to the Board regarding Saturday's weather.  I just received a phone call from MGoKid today.  She just issued a "No Fly Zone" for all Military Aircraft for the Carolina's.  She suspects this "No fly Zone" will grow as the week progresses.  This storm is gaining strength.

Now her forecast is slightly different from the Hurricane Center; however, she says the rain total will increase in the DC area.  She maintains her original forecast that the center of circulation will remain off the coast due to the High Pressure system in-land.  So the heavy thunderstorms should not affect the coast.

Her prediction is there will be very limited lightening, if any.  However, 6" of rain from this storm is likely.

Let me rephrase: I think, given the weather and IN SPITE OF WD's AFFINITY FOR NOON GAMES, moving this up to noon is in the best interest of all involved.

Yeah, significant rain is a bad environment fora  pre-game show, but the game has not be postponed and BTN is still planning to air that.

I live in DC and have been here for numerous false alarm shutdowns of the city and government. I just hope they show a little more restraint this time and wait until they are as sure as they can be that this is going to warrant a rescheduling.

to an extent, but if the question is, try to play the game as scheduled at all costs or move it to 10 AM or noon on Saturday right now to avoid a possible cancellation, they should move it.  It would alter some plans but it is not like this is a national showdown that the nation is planning around.  It is a night game because BTN needed something on their schedule.  Play the game in the morning and get everybody out of there by 6 PM.  You're right, the storm is probably mostly hype, but I think it is wise to just get the game played before they have to cancel at 6 PM on Saturday and have a real mess on their hands.

I think they still have 24 hours or so to make a decision.  And I think it will come down to Michigan's ability to get out.  I assume the team's charter leaves after the game, so the question is, will Michigan be able to take a 2AM flight?  Yesterday, there would have been no way, but projections have steadily moved the storm further to the south since then.  If they can put off a decision until tomorrow's 2PM NHC update, they should have an idea if Michigan should have no problems getting out at the scheduled departure time or if it's going to be close.

I also think making a decision tomorrow is enough time for everyone to adjust schedules.  I don't think it would be fair to leave the decision until Friday.  My guess is that we'll know tomorrow one way or the other.

I don't think that means much. There's just too much uncertainty about the path, timing and intensity at this point to go forward. BTN would have to start getting advance teams there now. Big gamble to make without enough good info. They can move game time the day before if they want.

MGoKid says the rain will start Saturday.  Because Saturday is so far away, the speed of the storm could change.  She looked at the models at lunch when she made her first forecast so the storm track is not likely to change but the speed could change.

She is saying a noon kick should be fine but the late kick is too risky.  (Full Disclosure: she loves noon kicks anyway).

Sunday and Monday will be the worst days for sure.

There is a second system that is moving in from the west that is interfering with Joaqiun predictions. This second system will likely dump on the NCR for the next 3-4 days, even if Joaquin stays offshore. The rain being predicted for Saturday is mostly unrelated to the hurricane.

I am also a meteorologist, and this seems rather alarmist. It may start raining on Saturday, but it won't be because of Hurricane Joaquin. As of the current track, the storm will still be located well to the South, remaining SE of the Outer Banks in North Carolina on Sunday morning, at 8AM. Model trends have continued to slow this down, and not speed it up, and if it goes any slower it may get caught up in the cold front and push it farther out to sea. Speaking of cold front, that will be the main driver of rainfall along the coast on Friday and Saturday, not Joaquin. Joaquin isn't slated to be level (latitude wise) until Monday morning at 8AM. So, based off the current projections, moving up the game seems like a premature move. My two cents.

That is true, but that is not the case when the distance between the storm center and the location of the game is still well over 500 miles. I don't see Joaquin having any impact on the game or people leaving the next morning. Now, flight cancellations are still possible due to adverse weather from the frontal system, but not Joaquin, unless government parties really jump the gun or this thing speeds up drastically.

Yet another reason the B1G should never have admitted Maryland and Rutgers. Never had to worry about hurricanes when PSU was as far east as the B1G reached.

DAMN YOU DELANEY AND WEATHER!!!!!

I'm sure the debt-saddled Maryland athletic department wouldn't mind a big payout from the conference in exchange for moving the game to a venue outside of the affected area. Say, Ann Arbor...

(No, I don't actually think this has a chance of happening.)

It is kind of BS if they do not move the game.  It will detract Michigan fans from traveling to the area and provide an even bigger home field advantage for them.  I suppose they need all the help they can get though.
