This will be the thread for your snowflakes and hot takes on the offense and offensive playcalling for the UNLV game.

Rudock is a heartbeat slow on many of the downfield passes. Concern over TOs I don't know. Liked seeing Speight in there looked confident with a strong strong arm. Good ball placement for someone with no gametime.

We didn't cover the spread vs UNLV. I'm a bit worried. Rudock's arm was terrible today and our offense sputtered in the second half. We should have destroyed that team. That said, we would have probably come close to losing that game last season.

I agree with many of the comments about Rudock not looking sharp.  In the first two games I chalked it up to nerves, new system, not much time on campus.  I really thought he was going to be much better today against a weak opponent.  Instead he was hesitant, late, throwing behind receivers, and just not finishing drives like he should.  We're in for a fight next weekend.  And we most definitely will not beat MSU with this type of QB play.

I'm hoping the QBs and WRs will improve, but it feels like I shouldn't expect much from the passing game until next year. I thought Speight's almost-touchdowns looked great, though. And too bad O'Korn can't play now.

Aside from the Jake concerns, there were two short yardage run plays--a 3rd and 4th down--that we couldn't pick up again. I think it was Kalis and Braden wiffing on their blocks again. Yikes.

Rudock is who he is, I was expecting a little more from him this year and when we have to throw I don't have faith in him. Seeing speight taking shots down the field, both could have been TD's on his only possession is what we need. I'd rather have a interception throwing aggressively versus throwing conservative passes and seeing them get jumped. Don't quote me but all but one INT for Rudock has been on short conservative routes. I don't understand how he can be so bad with the running game we've possessed in 2 out of the 3 games we played so far, but it seems like the better running game we have going on the worse Rudock plays

Next weeks game will be very telling. It's hard to get a handle on this team through three games with the competition we played. I'm not going to complain when we beat a team by three scores and don't perform very well on offense

Rudock has got to be better on the long balls. If they want to bear the better teams they have to be able to get the ball down the field or teams are just going to stack the box.

It was so much more than that today. He missed a few wide open WR's with lil to no pressure. I know one throw was to Butt in the endzone, he threw the ball late and behind him.

I just dont see the reason to panick right now. UCLA beat UNLV 37-3 they are a top 10 team, We beat them 28-7 and the big play that led to the TD was when Hill hurt his foot/ankle. Ohio state was down at the half to VT, They're trailing right now to Northern illinois and didn't look to great against Hawaii last week. MSU's defense is giving up 24 points a game, squa\eeked out a home win over Oregon, who's starting QB was playing with a broken index finger. Their offense is scoring 34. I just don't see why everyone is freaking out like we lost, we won by three scores

Rudock is ok. I am not happy with some bad throws and no long balls. But, I have not fogotten the QBs not able to move the offense. Rudock has consistently done that even though he has made some mistakes. He gives us a chance, though a little less than what we all expected. We are complaining about a QB who has moved the ball, albeit looking completely average.

I will take that over what we endured the last few years. But, I am positive about our future.

Lowered my expectations to seven wins. We're stuck with a bad Qb and need the defense to win games. The improved running game will keep things interesting but teams are just going to stack the box against us.

Blake Johnson is faster to the hole than anyone else on the team and quick once he is through that hole.

Ty Isaac is showing what everyone expected from his ratings….he is elusive, can bounce off some tackles and has speed to get the home run.

D. Green not so hot today and Green is having trouble getting on the field as Johnson and Isaac develop.  I see him transferring after this year.

Rudock was not impressive at all.  Come on Jake and get it together or we are in trouble in league play.

While I was not thrilled with Rudock's performance, I do think there were a couple reasons.

  • The running game was just OK, due to UNLV stacking up the box.  The play calling was run mostly on 1st down, and pass mostly on only passing situations (more on this in a later post).  Thus the running game, while OK, did not open up the passing game.
  • The WRs didn't really get a lot of separation (not unexpected) and I think they are still having some issues with running patterns.
  • I didn't see much new this game - I think Harbaugh is not going to expose anything he doesn't, and he didn't this game.  This was an easy game for UNLV to defend as there were no surprises.

Yeah, Rudock was late on a lot throws, but I didn't see a lot of obvious, open targets for him to throw at.  I suspect he was late his first/second reads were throws through tight windows, and mostly on obvious passing downs (more below).

I have seen him stare a few guys down, and over-look a couple of receivers that I thought were open (that can be deceiving watching on TV), but I think on most passing plays he has been going through a progression of passes of varying degrees of difficulty to throw, looking for something better than a tight window to throw through. That is OK every once in a while for a college QB, but when its the majority of pass plays, its a killer.

I don't think the play calling made things easy for Rudock, and Harbaugh kept things vanilla (no new plays and not mixing things up on down/distance). To get an initial grasp I took a look at the play calling on 1st down. Rudock on 1st down: First half: 10 runs 3 passes: 1 for 11 yards, 1 for 9 yards, and INT in order 2nd half: 8 runs 4 passes, all complete, for 8, 9, 8, and 9 yards. Then Speight came in. So on a non-obvious passing down, 1st and 10, Rudock was 6-7 for 54 yards and a bad INT. Yeah, that's meh, but because of 1 bad pass. I think he is the best we have available right now, and that he will improve through the season. But, I would hate to depend on him trying the lead the team in a comeback. He just isn't that kind of QB.

Rudock is okay on a good day. That must mean Morris is really, really bad right now.

No worries my friends. O'Korn/Gentry/Peters are on the way. Harbaugh will build a QB Dynasty here. Just give the man time.

Gentlemen, Rome was not built in a day.

I've said this before but I know a Hs coach who have coached against Shane Morris. He thinks he sucks back then and it hasn't changed his opinion now. He said Malzone > Morris but he thinks Harbaugh is holding him back to get more experience in his system plus redshirt.

Is not good. Are you telling me Speight or Morris couldn't complete WR screens because that is all Rudock is capable of. Look, I get the trust Harbaugh if anyone was better they would be playing rationale as I felt the same way. That changed today. Rudock is awful, I'm not sure he made more than one accurate pass all day. Speight looked like he had a nice catchable ball and I think he needs a shot. Honestly, it's cliche but he couldn't do any worse.

Overall the O did pretty well. Second half was disappointing but it sort of looked like they were trying out new things. Ruddock to me looks like he is playing to not lose. I realize he is the best we have, but it is disappointing. Hopefully, he improves as the year goes on.
