What irks me is the fact we were celebrating while their quarterback ran for 16 yards...

At the very least, this is proof that Channing Stribling has finally overcome his Allen Robinson related PTSD. Feeling very good about our DB depth now.

Played pretty dominantly until the end. They always have a rough drive or two. A very good defense, not quite elite.
That second corner position is going to be severely tested next week.

I saw him make a couple of plays, including a nice hit on the QB. Wasn't looking for him regularly, though. Just glad to see him get more of a chance.

I agree. I have always been pretty high on Gedeon, but thought he looked pretty bad as well. Seemed slow today imo.

Held them to 92 yards on the ground on a 2.6 ypc average...very solid agains the run and forced a couple of turnovers.
If we're going to beat BYU, it'll be because of this defense.
September 19th, 2015 at 3:35 PM ^
Pretty much overwhelmed them. Though I wasn't blown away by our defense, too many missed tackles -- looked like they lacked a little focus playing such an inferior opponent. It's also frustrating to watch an opposing QB lauch perfect passes when he is about to get killed (the two big plays on their scoring drive).

Against Michigan they were undermanned and much slower. Yet, the Michigan pass rush was at best less than acceptable. IF they give BYU that much time to pass next week, it will be a turkey shoot. BYU receivers are very big and strong. Doubt anyone can cover them if the QB has time to throw.

man some of you guys are nitpckers. I'd give the defense a solid A for the day. Other than 2 plays they completely dominated.
Lewis and Stribbling I thought particularly stood out.

Alot of the top 10 teams look a little shaky here and there. What seperates elite from average is how they improve, or not improve, over the course of the season.
We have experience and talent on D, we have Harbaugh and 2 of the best Defensive coaches in CFB...Durkin and Mattison. I wouldn't trade that with ANYONE.

Last year Ole Miss had the #1 scoring defense in FBS and also allowed 15 pts to the ragin cajuns. Not bringing your best vs a cupcake is not a huge deal.

Their two largest gains before the pass was a play where the QB was seemingly sacked but actually wasn't and the draw on 3 and forever at the end of the first half.
Michigan played with a lack of intensity in the 2nd half. That was the problem.
September 20th, 2015 at 6:16 AM ^
Plus at any other point in the game that draw at the end of the first half is negated because of the offensive penalty.
We could have accepted the penalty and wiped out all that yardage. But it made no sense to re-do the down when it had no effect other than stats.

I like in-depth analysis as much as the next guy, but let's zoom the camera out a little bit. Here was UNLV drive by drive:
4 plays, 15 yards (all on the one weird pseudo-sack), INT
5 plays, 9 yards, PUNT
6 plays, 21 yards, PUNT
3 plays, 1 yard, PUNT
3 plays, 1 yard, PUNT
7 plays, 24 yards (all yards basically gained on two plays), PUNT
3 plays, 16 yards, PUNT
HALF
3 plays, 0 yards, PUNT
7 plays, 18 yards, PUNT
1 play, 15 yards, INT
5 plays, 75 yards, TD
3 plays, 8 yards, PUNT
12 plays, 41 yards against scrubbie team
GAME ENDS
So out of 14 drives:
- 5 were 3 and outs,
- 2 ended in turnovers, and
- UNLV earned 15 first downs, four of which came in the final drive against the scrubs.
This was an A- defensive performance. The problem (to the extent there is one) is our offense.

Bingo. Theres room for improvement, but that would have been true no matter what happened on the field today.
September 19th, 2015 at 8:51 PM ^
First watch, it looks like Peppers is improving in his coverage. He was targeted on a circle route as Brian called it - um, I think he was targeted on it in the 3rd? sorry, can't remember exactly - and he did better than when Utah through the same thing at him as picture paged here.
I also liked the flashes out of Hurst. He had at least one Hulk Smash-and-Tackle type play. Godin was impressive too. Charlton stood out some plays.
I think the D is improving. We played pretty vanilla this game. I'd bet we were already practicing for BYU. Big test next week!
September 19th, 2015 at 9:29 PM ^
D-line didn't get as much pressure as I thought they would but all in all it's hard to complain about much. They dominated most of the game
September 19th, 2015 at 9:46 PM ^
The lbs are still our biggest liability on D am surprised at the gulf between public perception of our lb core, relative to what I view and wonder why, maybe I'm delusional but I want to see three new lbs
am not concerned with BYU because this team will play up to the level
I like RJS intensity and would like to see more of him over Ojeda who seems privy to the option fake
