Utah/Utah State Open Thread
Watching last week's opponent to try to figure out how good they are.
7-0 Utes late first, though USU is driving after a great catch on a deep ball and a roughing the passer penalty. Spread is a little more effective running the ball than we were, which is concerning me. Utah's offense has looked pretty good with an easy TD drive and a second really promising drive that was killed by a penalty that the refs forgot to announce (PAC-12 refs!).
Early indications are a little concerning for the offense but encouraging for the defense.

Running straight at the Utah front still looks like a bad idea.

Utah State is averaging over 4 yards per carry. They have a run of 14 and one of 8. Michigan averaged 2.3 with a long of 7 and a second longest of 5.
I think the jury is still out for whether Utah's D line is all that.

In 2012 they went 11-2 and finished the season ranked. Not much the last 2 years

you're right. Looking back at it, 9-5 in 13 and 10-4 last year like you said. Ranked 45th and 51st in the massey ratings so yea they have been good the last two years as well. My bad

He must be like a 6th yr senior - I saw him years ago as a Freshman maybe? (seems like during the RR era at M but probably just after) and was impressed. He has been hurt a lot in his career I think the announcers said.
He's a decent runner -- small and quick but several steps down from Denard -- and probably a bit better passer than Denard was. Pretty Dynamic but tiny -- guessing USU was one of the few that offered him as a QB.

Judging Michigan on Harbaugh's first game is pretty silly. The stench of bad coaching takes more than an offseason to get rid of.

Utah St. isn't a bad team, though - they finished 10-4 last year and aren't playing their first game of the season with a new head coach, a new starting QB, and a new offensive philosophy.
Nobody expects UM to go 11-1 or anything, but they'll be better.

where I wish we could bring Denard and the read option back for just one game. We would have smoked this team last week if we had a mobile QB.

I am so impressed with him, he's calm in the pocket, throws a wonderful and catchable ball short or deep and he looks pretty athletic, can run the ball too.
Looking forward to seeing that kid in A2!
