My (short) conversation with Thomas Wilcher

Submitted by jmdblue on

So I was at my daughter's track regional a few weeks ago and saw Coach Wilcher whose daughter was also competing.  We were both walking alone and I said hello.  He instantly assumed an expression of pure dread.  I told him we'd run against each other once in High School and he had taught me a little about what "fast" meant (as many know he was an All American sprinter/hurdler as well as being a tailback for Detroit Central and M).  His demeanor changed entirely and we chatted for a minute about our daughters.  My guess is he's so used to being accosted by strangers over football and recruiting that he automatically tenses up when he hears his name in public.  Anyway, not such a cool story bra, but thought I'd share.

Also, for a bit of straight up bragging, my kid did make the state meet exceeding all preseason expections! (proud papa here)

my issue is: you wanna grand stand and stuff and be some vigilante mgoblog patrol cop when I posted that I was going to have a chance to look at michigans playbook, and offered to give very vague information on it. You made a FREAKING THREAD about me and started talkin shit, thats a little weird. You brought it to the whole boards attention. Your reason for doing so was that you were some protective super fan who didn't want secret information getting out, all of this with a brand new account name, like you just come on here and start running shit. The problem is that i what you just posted is true then you really arent a fan at all, or a very ignorant one. Tressell screwed this program over in countless ways and if you don't know the reasons or are too dense to realize them then gtfo, ig nor ANT! So yeah, thats why I think you are on huge douchebag who never even played football. All you do is post articles on here that everyone sees anyways (we all know how to type in mlive.com)

BTW looking at that playbook was awesome, very informative and e3ducational, that is if you know something about the game of football, so I guess you wouldn't have found it interesting or be able to decifer it anyways.

I'm 29, I work at a HS as a counselor, and I coach as well. Why don't you try leaving the house sometime, step away from the screen for a while, no one has posted more bullshit on here all day everyday than you. its not like you have quality posts, just quantity. I only ever started one thread before, it was about how I found a Cazzie Russel article in an old sport Magazine from 1966, i took poictures and posted the article, because it was BOARD WORTHY. You water this board down so much its no longer even close to twhat it used to be. I know i'm not that well liked on here, but I could give two shits, at least I'm not insecure enough to go back and track everyone of my posts and downvote them (yes everyone he did that). SO when you want to reference free time/productivity, you're being a bit of a hypocrite, Ive helped a lot of real life kids/humans today. Try contributing to society instead of sitting behind your computer and "working from home"...

No doubt Tressel is of seriously dubious character.... maybe even mentally ill the way he seemed to have mixed his moral superiority with his treatment of the rule book.... but we're only in June.  Several months to go before starting to amp things up...

My uncool story bro moment: I ran into Peppers at Best Buy a couple days ago. He was quite a bit smaller than I expected after how jacked he looked in that Twitter pic from last week. Oh and the girl he was with was pretty darn good-looking.

Well I've had a million encounters with or known/been friends with Michigan athletes. As for Grant, I played with him at the CCRB a few times. If I made a great cut to the basket he put the ball in my hands every time even though random regular students would often freeze me out due to my size. Gave him a couple of rides home, and he gave his phone number so I could call to see if he got me tickets for a big game up at Staee, alas he couldn't round anything up for me :(

As far as randomly running into M guys in public my favorite was probably seeing Turner, Tarpley, and I think the Judge if I remember right, at the gas station at Main & Madison all wearing their full length mink coats! I hadn't seen anything like that since I used to see my Knick's heroes Clyde Cool and Earl the Pearl come to Cobo. Not only were they dressed like that, but the entire crowd would show up in Superfly outfits when the Knick's came to town! It was like a Rocky Horror crowd dressing up like the characters! :)

Johnny from Seattle got to play the national anthem on his electric guitar, and I told him that I thought his version was really cool and he thanked me.  Unfortunately, the camp owners and some of the counselors got real angry about the way he was playing it, and they made him promise never to play it that way again. Years later, Johnny's version of The Star Spangled Banner became a big sensation.

one of UM's legends, in a Florida Keys gift shop one time, got a handshake and a Go Blue. Messner pancaking Tony Mandarich is one of my fondest Wolverine memories of all time. Can I be in the cool story club?

I know you're being facetious, but honestly his initial reaction to being spoken to by a stranger really made me feel odd.  Then the positive change in his body language when he realized I was just a guy who ran track about the same time as him and we both had daughters in the meet made it pretty obvious that college football as a topic should be thoroughly avoided.

I know that look of dread.  I was downtown one morning on my way to work when the car in front of me slipped out of gear and rolled back into mine.  I get out, the guy gets out.  I'm annoyed and yelling, when I notice that he looks fairly familiar and is wearing Cass Tech clothes.  He was pretty nice and calm despite me being pissed.  When we exchanged info, I realized he was Thomas Wilcher.  I said "Thomas WIlcher...as in the ball coach at Cass Tech?" and I watched as he developed this "oh great..." look of dread on his face.

(He probably was thinking "you're one of those guys that's going to put this on a message board or something...")

Jimmy King was in my public speaking class.  He never came to class.  When he had to give a presentation he bullshitted the entire thing and laughed it off.

I do take out of this post the need to give people space. I think the reason that many celebs pay money to go to exclusive vacation spots is to avoid the attention and the paparazzi and the fans, etc. I think people want to feel normal. Interestingly, I've heard so many recruits report that they appreciate just talking about life with coaches. Some of the fan stuff is just not healthy. If a coach or celebrity wants to talk, they will. If they want their space, give it to them. I've had interactions with a few celebrities, and try to leave them be. Having crossed paths with Bill Walton, Dick Vitale, Roy Tarpley, Glen Rice, Rich Rellford, Butch Wade, and a few others, I don't think I ever asked for an autograph or for their space.
