OT: Sepp Blatter Resigning!!!!!!!

Submitted by BornSinner on

Wow... go USA! Sponsors must've pulled the plug or the investigation is getting real.

Posbang w/e joy everywhere!

Edit:

I believe this is the smoking gun? Or at least a very big part of getting dirt on Sepp. Valcke is Sepp's right hand man.

I guess the question now is this - who will deny the obvious and fill the world sports media with incredible amounts of cognitive dissonance now?

In all seriousness though, I will be very intrigued to see where FIFA goes from here, if indeed it is ever possible to nudge them in a new direction (which, yeah....the money too). That might take a cultural revolution in the sport at large perhaps.

Re-elect me!  I am what we need to get out of this mess.  This week...I resign.  Sounds like the hammer is about to come down on ole Sepp.

Maybe they knew this was coming and he made sure to get re-elected first so a replacement could be appointed rather than elected? I'm just speculating. I have no idea how this process works.

since we wouldn't have to build anything.

Brazil spent $14b getting ready for the '14 World Cup. Given the Sochi Olympic experience ($50b), just imagine how much money the Russians will bilk out of their citizens for the '18 World Cup.

Know how much the U.S. spent in '94? About $30m.

Granted, that was over 20 years ago, but still way under the norm. Italy spent $5b in '90. France spent $340m in '98. Cheapest World Cup since the turn of the century was South Africa at $4b.

Yep...best ready-made sports infrastructure in the world. God bless America!!

Russia, for all its political issues, remains a plausible host country.  It has the resources, stadiums, fan interest and climate.   It won't lose the World Cup three years in advance.

Qatar OTOH was utterly implausible from day one and remains so now.  Thankfully there are still seven years to go, which is enough time to re-award that WC (and hopefully spare a few thousand slave laborers' lives).

There was a story in today's NY Times about how the $10 million bribe to Warner was in some way authorized or even transferred by Blatter's top lieutenant, Jerome Valcke:

Apparently, this may have hit too close to home. Blatter is on the list, no doubt, they just don't have t's crossed and i's dotted to get a warrant yet.

FIFA then the IOC then FIDE (that the Federation Internationale d'Eches - Chess world governing body) and then NCAA - yes, I know it is hard to believe but the Olympic body and FIDE are actually more messed up and at times could rival FIFA for their overt graft and corruption  - which shows it is really something that just can happen to any world body.

Meh.

His high-powered team of litigants will defeat any impending chages. He'll then move to Switzerland, where he undoubtedly has a ton of money hidden deep within nebulous bank accounts.

Wait...what?  He's Swiss?  Oh.  That's convenient.
