OT - Which state flag do you like / hate the most?
Slow Friday afternoon... might as well start something discussion-worthy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states
Which state flag do you love or hate the most? For me, the favorite is Alaska's: Simple, meaningful and easily stand out. The worst is Maryland's... The pattern, the Confederate-related cross and it just looks bad anywhere (not only on uniforms). Bonus: Most schizophrenic - Oregons's. A yellow beaver on the reverse side?! Really?!
So what's yours?

Worst:
Any flag stil using stars and bars. Ugh. Get over it.
New Mexico's flag is the best. Arizona, Colorado, and Maryland are honorable mention. My home state of Utah might have the worst flag.
it's kind of sad, considering how f*cking beautiful Utah is.
Ohio's flag is the only flag that isn't a rectangle...
That's only because Ohians don't know how to trace out a straight line or use a T-square.
has the U-M hockey wolverine/beaver on the reverse side.
The reverse side should be the entire flag.
This by itself would be pretty kickass. The other side of the flag ruins it.

King Kamehameha of Hawaii thought the Union Jack was the only "acceptable" form of flag... Hawaii has never been officially aligned with the British Empire nor the UK, per se.
Worst: Ohio (it's a fucking pennant!!!!)

Let's use all the power words division:
Eagles and America. The eagle is pooping sunshine because the tenacity is greatness.
This eagle wants to have words with you.
First person to move in gets to design the flag division:
Get it? I saw a beaver in the backyard. Also in 1859 we didn't have ruled stencils so...
Me injun, you chief, she squaw. Awahwahwahwahwhawhwah! This is still politically correct right?
In case you thought we meant Washington Irving, though he was cool too.
/looks up /points
That.
Um, you realize we threw off the yoke of the tyrannical British aristocracy right?
Is that like Banana Republic? Do you sell flannel shorts in this establishment? You look like you sell flannel shorts.
Let's all copy New York's Flag Division:
New York's flag:

Same as above but good job you put your name on it division:
States already thinking ahead to what the hockey jersey might look like:
nice.
A little busy but okay.
Classic.
Very cool.
Too many teams with those colors already but good logo.
Too big.
Classiest flag relative to classiness of the state:
I'd invite that to dinner, and would be highly surprised when it doesn't wear shoes.
We're MARITIME SEE?
,
So you're Scotland?
Flag I secretly admire (it's original and classy okay?!?)
thats it. turn in your michigan decoder ring. 1 week in the penalty box. what's next, posting on the 'name your child topic' with 'buckeye' as your answer. the shame, the shame...
kind of like the football version of getting out of north korea, they won't be flying that flag anytime soon.
and i'll have to google 'horace prettyman'.
The Alabama/Florida flags actually use the cross of Saint Patrick, associated with Ireland (and not Scotland). This is where the red diagonal crosses in the British flag come from.
The flag of England...
plus Scotland...
plus Ireland (traditional flag)...
equals the UK flag:
Looking at former state flags is also pretty interesting. Florida must've paid off South Dakota to make them stop using this
Worst: Ohio. Bc it's Ohio and I will blindly hate that flag just because.
... but i've always liked the Colorado flag. There is something pop arty about it.

Conversely, Kansas' is pretty damn bad.
Favorites would be Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina, with their reference to the CSA.
Also like California with the roaming bear.
Worst is Maryland. Bad color combination and design.
that is confederate states of america...?
six flags flying over the six sections of the original Six Flags over Texas. Now known as "Old South" area of the park.
Best: New Mexico. Simple, distinctive, geographically appropriate, and just looks cool. Runner-up: South Carolina. That moon is sweet.
Worst: Mississippi. The secesh flag belongs in a museum. Runner-up: N-way tie between every state that uses a seal on a bedsheet. State seals are meant to be looked at up close. Flags have to be recognizable from a distance.
Dislike: Ohio

Ohio
Worst state ever.
Second up vote for Arizona
Best: Maryland
Worst: Mississippi/Ohio
Alaska by a huge margin. California isn't bad, neither is washington.. Ohio possibly the worst, but a lot of state flags are hideously ugly, Utah is pretty bad.
I am only familiar with a handful of state flags, one of which is not Ohio. Thus, I can say with 100% confidence, "I hate Ohio's state flag."
Absolutely love it. Neat and clean. I also love California's. A freaking bear! It's awesome. "California Republic" is so nice and clean.
Worst has to be Mississippi for obvious reasons.
Does anyone else not really like Michigan's flag? Elk? Moose? Why? Do they even live here? Latin? I'd love for a flag to be the color of our state flower (Iris lacustris). How many state flags are dark purple. It's a cool flag color. A yellow Macinac Bridge on a purple flag, with the Great Lakes faded behind the bridge. Could have "mishigamaa" on it.
Yes, elk and moose do live here. Moose especially are quite numerous in the U.P.
But I agree that it's not the best flag - it's too similar to a bunch of other states' flags. A flag, above all, should be easily recognizeable. If you put all the state flags together, it'd be hard to pick out Michigan's.
Hawai'i is cool with both the dimensions and the colors.
Idaho is almost square.
Among the other territories, Guam could stand in for a College Football Playoff flag. And American Samoa is crazy long with the triangle field away from the pole which is pretty strange.
They've been talking about a change in PR's status for so long, I doubt anything will change in the next 50 years. Like a state, no federal income tax, get to be represented in international sports like their own country. And too much fighting among the different factions to ever unify on a choice for change. Even the last plebescite was ambiguous due to vote counters not following PR's own voting laws/rules in counting ballots.
That is all.
So...you know what it is best used for... ;-)
They spelled it wrong. Around here its call 2-plie.
If a flag is popular enough to actually be sold in merchandise, I see that as a good thing - people identify with it. Certainly that happens with the U.S. flag.
