In-N-Out over 5-Guys any day. Shake Shack destroys both. But I think (aside from Pat LaFrieda beef being the best) it also comes down to patty size and that 5-Guys has a bigger, but not better patty. Also not a crazy fan of Ray's Hell Burger for the same reason.

I don't think comparing the two makes much sense, they are like boxers in different weight classes.
That being said: 5 guys all damn day.

Can both be an option? Hard to go wrong unless you are eating at McDonalds.
Whataburger, Five Guys, and In and Out have awesome reputations.
April 30th, 2015 at 12:47 PM ^
McDonalds.
OK, it is McDonalds, so there are certain.... limitations on the product. But you cannot deny a piping hot order of perfectly salted McDonalds fries, and I don't care what anybody says, while it is truly the size of a half-dollar, Big Macs are still incredibly tasty.

In-N-Out - Simple, Fresh, Unbeliebably consistent, great service with fries that are odd sized and basically tasteless.
Five Guys - many options, often very good, but not always, annoyingly loud music in their stores, widely varying service, love the peanuts and solid fries.
In-N-Out the top choice, but I like to mix it up.
April 30th, 2015 at 11:46 AM ^
In-N-Out and it isn't close. I don't understand the 5 Guys love, I find it meh. Smashburger is miles and miles better than 5 Guys.

I have never discrimminated against a cheeseburger. Meatheads is another worth having that I haven't seen mentioned yet.
April 30th, 2015 at 11:50 AM ^
And if you are ever in NE Ohio, go to Brown Bag Burger, blows Five Guys out of the water.
April 30th, 2015 at 11:51 AM ^
I took a couple of colleagues from China who have never tasted a burger to In-N-Out (in Phoenix, AZ) and their response was meh. A few days later, took them to five guys and they gobbled the burger down in five minutes, while exclaiming why the franchise wasn't in China.
Personally I will take Five Guys over In-N-Out any time.

White Castle. (Love me some White Castle, but obv. /s.)
Seriously, a burger is something I can do so easily and cheaply on the grill at home. I'd rather spend my dining money on things I can't cook myself. Spend money on good beef and ingredients and throw it on the Weber.
FTR, I loved In-and-out when I lived in LA.
April 30th, 2015 at 11:54 AM ^
Seconded. Craver Nation.
April 30th, 2015 at 12:55 PM ^
Hence the /s tag. I grew up with White Castle burgers, and they'll always have a place in my heart. I remember when sliders were less than a quarter as a boy in the 60's.
Obv., IAO & 5 guys are much better. I just can't usually justify the cost.
White Castle will always have a place in your heart because of the clogged arteries it caused.
Ah yes, White Castle's. Eating there could give you gas that, at a proper concentration, could easily be weaponized.

Culver's over both but that may be because I have access to InO and Five Guys, though Five Guys was founded by a Michigan grad.

Five Guys has better fries. I prefer In-n-Out burgers (provided it's animal style). Also, In-n-Out has the advantage of offering milkshakes (neapolitan for me, please).
I wouldn't be upset to eat at either, though.
April 30th, 2015 at 11:56 AM ^
Never had In-N-Out, but I like Five Guys. But having recently moved to Raleigh, I can say that Cookout is the shit. Simple, flame-broiled burgers for cheap. Mmmmmm
April 30th, 2015 at 12:38 PM ^
Cookout is awesome!
Cookout is good, but try Char-Grill.
They have 10 locations in the Triangle (and 1 in Charlotte), have been around since 1960, and only 1 of the 11 is a franchise. The rest family owned from what i understand.
I like flame-broiled burgers, but charcoal grilled beats them every time.

Is like sex. When it's good, it's really awesome. And even when it's bad, it's still pretty good.

In N Out > most burger joints, including Checkers, Steak n Shake, Five Guys, etc etc.
whenever someone I know is going out West on a trip I ask them to bring me back COLD In N Out lol.

took talking about burgers to get me to write my first response. I don't find Five Guys burgers to be that good. Their pan-grilled hot dogs are not bad though. In-N-Out is a fast food burger, but one of the best you can get. Double / Double animal style has enough meat, but isn't overwhelming. If you're in NY or NJ, give Shake Shack a try. IMHO, best fast food burger. Side note, I would take a Culver's butter burger over a five guys burger.
Shake Shack is opening a location in Austin, TX. Why did I have to move too soon?!?!?!?!

Listen, I've lived in both DC (where Five Guys started) and California (In-N-Out) and the correct answer to this question is DELICIOUS!

They are both good, but if you end up in a city where they are testing Five Guys shakes try them. They are pretty good.

give it a rest...

I can also click on this and post to state my opinion of how stupid it is. Doesnt Mlive have a food forum, or a travel forum, or a freaking cars forum?
So thanks tips, I'm fully aware.
Most of all their forums are dead though since they have changed to crappier and crappier format over the years. I remember I used to post in the casino forum about Soaring Eagle casino lol.

They are both excelent and for fear of pissing off the burger gods I won't pick one over the other. Lot's of good burgers here in Chicago though.
I do occasionaly crave a Mr. Burger from time to time from my old childhood stomping grounds in Wyoming, Mi.
April 30th, 2015 at 12:22 PM ^
But remember Mr. Fables in the Grand Rapids area? I randomly was looking up what happened to them the other day. Looked like the last one open was 2001 and the owner of Wolfgangs currently holds its rights if it were to ever be rebooted.
Mr. Burger is solid, though. Love their shakes

You're right. Sometimes I get those places mixed up in my mind even though they serve completely different food:

I'll take either over Shake Shack. That place is terrible. 7 bucks for a burger of which I could eat 3.
Personally, I think most towns/cities have a hole-in-the-wall burger joint that's much better. Down here in Florida it's Charm City Burger Company in Deerfield Beach. Ridiculous.

Biggie or Tupac. Come on, this is like the Soda v Pop thing, all depends on where you live!
