I do miss living in Michigan where everything was Pop...but...
April 28th, 2015 at 10:44 AM ^
THIS IS A MICHIGAN SITE SO WE GO BY MICHIGAN TERMINOLOGY. I FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT THIS
April 28th, 2015 at 10:51 AM ^
But I don't want the fact that I don't live in Michigan anymore be a detractor to my fandom.
Was it Kierkegaard or Dick Van Patten who said "If you label me, you negate me"?

WCP is unbeatable, also love some Squirt
April 28th, 2015 at 11:21 AM ^
YES. Squirt is entirely too hard to find though, depending on where you are.
April 28th, 2015 at 11:27 AM ^
You must not be in MI because every store I go to has Squirt.
April 28th, 2015 at 11:34 AM ^
Correct. It's more local than you think. Less so than Vernors, but yeah.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:01 PM ^
I wish Vernors wasn't so big here. All of my roommates drink it and I'd rather drink my own urine - it tastes equal if not better AND it's free!
thanks, buddy.

Sprite is number one and then Barq's Root Beer.
April 28th, 2015 at 10:45 AM ^
Mountain Dew - I loves me some cold caffeine.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:56 PM ^
Mountain Dew is indeed excellent. That is my third favorite.

Squirt

Anybody who says soda is wrong. Don't conform to the east coast.
April 28th, 2015 at 10:53 AM ^
I've lived and/or visited all over the world and its not just an East coast thing.

I could drink a whole 2 liter bottle in one day with ease when I get the flu.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:04 PM ^
would warm up a small pot of Vernors to treat a cold/sinus congestion. It brings the bubbles out of solution and something about the ginger really works well to help clear. Tastes good warm, too.
April 28th, 2015 at 10:46 AM ^
However, my favorite syrupy carbonated beverage all depends on what meal in heating, the weather, time of day. Too many factors. If I'm sick give me vernors. If I'm at the ballgame I'll take a Pepsi or coke when I can't afford any more beer. If I'm pregaming with vodka I'll take orange crush or Mountain Dew.
One does not simply have a favorite.

mostly the pineapple since it's not as common a flavor, but like the others as well
April 28th, 2015 at 10:48 AM ^
I asked for pop at the Rutgers game last year. They didn't know what I was talking about. Do they not know that pop is the midwestern name for sugary beverages? Even I know that pop is called soda and coke in other areas of the country.

Tell me about your coffee.
If you aren't using a french press, you are doing it wrong.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:14 PM ^
last week for the first time. I didn't like that I had to actually do work for my coffee, but you are so right. It was amazing!!
April 28th, 2015 at 12:38 PM ^
I do somewhat miss being able to push a couple buttons and have coffee in a few minutes, but there is no comparison in quality. It takes me about 15 minutes now, start to finish.
A few tips:
- buy fresh beans (quality of course), and grind only what you're using as you use it.
- you need a good quality burr mill grinder (this will cost a bit of money, but so worth it since consistant grind size is all important with a french press).
- use pure water, not tap or spring water. Distilled is best for tasting only the coffee.
- water temp is crucial; boil water, let it set for about 45 seconds, then pour into the press.
- fin.
edit: there are other means of making superior coffee, but really none of them involve a machine. Unless we're talking espresso, which is another topic altogether.
Oh, and Starbucks is awful coffee.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:14 PM ^
But the problem with french press is the oils. Not only will the coffee oil give you bad gas (at least it does me) but it also raises your colesterol.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:32 PM ^
It doesn't affect me like that at all. And I'm not even slightly concerned about coffee oil raising my cholesterol, but I'm a pretty healthy eater.
aeropress or chorreador. faster, taste just as good/better and the grounds are SO much easier to clean up.
I'll give you chorreador, but not the aeropress. Unless you're camping.
You can't make a cafecito in a french press. Just saying. I do like a french press, but i'll stick to espresso. I roast my own beans so I get to.

but all-time favs are probably (no specific order)
Coke from a can -- fountain Coke is just not as good to me
A&W Root Beer -- everybody has their preferences in the root beer department (bitter vs. smooth), A&W is the smoothest to me and I enjoy it the most
Old Sprite -- doesn't exist anymore; used to be a very seperate taste from 7-UP, but now they're pretty similar. I remember drinking a ton of it one summer when I was around 10 or 11.
Faygo Redpop -- used to have pink cows as a kid, Redpop + milk
Faygo Rock & Rye -- really nothing else like it
Faygo Creme Soda -- this was like crack to me as a kid
Dr. Pepper
sometimes I would have a craving for Faygo Grape -- the flavor is so fake, but I still enjoyed it
Vernors, of course
I've never been a big Mountain Dew drinker, but I expect there to be some hardcore Dew addicts in here somewhere

Refreshing and tart. It also makes some nice cocktails with Grey Goose or Patron.
April 28th, 2015 at 10:54 AM ^
I always considered the ultra sugared modern versions mostly pop. Whereas the old flavored soda's and/or soda waters were soda.
I believe some are pop and some are soda and the majority are misclassed. That being said in STL I'm forced to say soda or be stared at like a social outcast from another planet.

lost your email, I have some reel to reel and cassette tapes of UM hockey and baseball broadcasts from the mid 70s to early 80s. I had the Bobby Knight rant tape that you converted.

Dr. Pepper is my go-to
I also really like Coke with lime. Not available in cans anymore :( - the magical fountain stuff is decent, but not as good as the canned.
