OT - Recently Deceased Legend Dean Smith Wills Each Former Player $200
What a guy.
Coach Smith willed his trust to send a $200 check to each his former players following his passing. #DeanSmith pic.twitter.com/NyiBhU9taQ

Anyone have an idea of how many players he coached?
For a rough estimate:
15 players on a roster, 4 years of eligibility - so 3.75 new players per year.
36(?) years as UNC HC
36 x 3.75 = 135 players
(This could be completely wrong.)
Your logic seems sound. It is nice that he decided to give something, but for a man who was probably worth several millions of dollars easily, to bequeath a total of $27,000 (135 x $200) seems a little insignificant since they helped him earn his millions.
he could have left them nothing. Very kind. Well done, Dean.
I understand that, but at what point does it become insignificant, at $100, $50, or $20. My point was in relation to what he was worth and how much they contributed to his legacy. So Michael Jordan and James Worthy will get a check, as well as all the other players, the financial institution handling this will easily charge $5 - $10 a check. Would not the $27,000 plus trust administration cost be better spent on one donation to the scholarship fund at UNC or some other charity like the The American Cancer Foundation?
There are a lot of dead Hollywood stars who owe me A LOT of cash for watching/buying their movies!!
Luckily, we belive in free will here in the good ol' USA. People can spend their hard earned money on whatever they want.
Yes, the money I spent on a BMW over the holidays could have fed hundreds of children in Africa. But feeding starving children isn't the incentive that caused me to work my ass off to be able to afford it.
This is reminiscent of an old Louie bit where he states with regards to his Infiniti, "Every day I make them die with my car".
Maybe he did leave money to other institutions and causes.
There's an associated letter making the rounds. He just wanted to buy them all dinner --

Trust me, I'm as cynical as they come, but there isn't a lot to pick at here. It's fine.
of him to do so. Cool move. Thanks for the twitter link, good to see what it was for. Nice gesture by the coach, may he RIP.
After reading that letter, and that Dean wanted to buy his players one last dinner, I think this is really a cool move by Dean Smith. This isn't about the money. It's a thoughtful gesture.
He made plenty of contributions off the playing field. If he wants to will his guys a free dinner or nice suit, it was his money and free will.
Digging: you should probably stop.
Dean Smith has done more than enough for everyone associated with NC. The dude integrated the UNC AD and helped integrate the ACC in general.
I don't think anyone is feeling contempt about this except you.
You were close. It is 180 to be exact. What a class act. Hopefully my Tar Heels can get a W tonight for Dean.

135 is "close" to 180? Heh, you're a polite one.
Just a guess.
If a guy transferred out of his program, does he still get the $200?
I would hope that the ones who transferred after he announced his retirement should get the $200, but not the ones who transferred while he has still there. That shows that they were committed to being coached by him.
Letter says all varsity lettermen are getting 200 and note to enjoy a dinner out compliments of Coach Dean Smith. Classy move.
is if he had directed his money toward helping fund scholarships and remedial training for all the UNC players who were used by the university and left school with no real education to show for it.
Yeah damn that old guy Dean Smith, who had severe dementia when the UNC academic scandal broke, for not making up for all the issues associated with UNC athletics.
His anti-segregationist actions are enough for one lifetime.
Depending on what you read the roots of the scandal might have began as early as the mid-90's. Dean Smith was still the basketball coach at UNC then.
This seems right. The guy wants each guy to enjoy a meal, maybe with his teammates, maybe with his family. Seems a good way to remember your coach, and for your coach to show that he cared about you. I dig it.
CHAPEL HILL- The NCAA has opened an investigation into allegations of impermissible benefits from the estate of former Tarheel basketball coach Dean Smith.
/only half joking
If only we had more college basketball coaches like him today.
Shame on you.
This is awesome.
If he passed away while still coaching, would this be an NCAA violation? Semi-serious question
Jordan already bet it all on a golf game, along with $49,800 of his own money. Barkley has been taking lessons and is excited.
Mike Jordan, billionaire golf gambler who regularly plays for tens of thousands of dollars and tips his caddie less than they'd make looping for me. What a guy!
Gunga galunga.
Right in the lumber yard.
Sorry, Caddyshack was on last night.
turrible!
That's an awesome gesture from Smith, and consistent with who he was widely understood to be as a person, I would think. The simple instructions he left - "enjoy a dinner out, compliments of Coach Smith" - we pretty nice, and hopefully a fair number of those players raise a glass to their former coach.
His anti-segregation efforts are described in the link below.
A sampe of the article:
He exerted his influence to help a black graduate student buy a home in an all-white neighborhood. He did the same to integrate Chapel Hill restaurants notorious for turning away black customers. He also recruited Scott to North Carolina in 1966 at a time when most other top Southern programs were still resistant to bringing in black players, an instrumental moment in the desegregation of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
I'm giving $200 to all MGoMembers who upvote this post. Just leave your bank account info in the comments so my estate can wire you the money.
Should I add my Social Security number too? I just want to make sure I properly cash in on your death.
for good measure. Make sure you get what's coming to you.
So what if the amount of $ was insignificant to his estate? He cared enough about his players to do something for them, even if it was just a nice meal out and a chance to reminicse about their past glories.
More people should be like this.
Kudos to him
As I Duke fan, I say, RIP Dean Smith. You were a hell of a coach and a really nice dude, and this is a super cool thing that you did.

...as a final "thank you card" from Dean. Just a nice reminder that his players meant something to him. Not really meant as financial aid. The players can go out and have a nice dinner and drinks on Dean and remember the good old days.
