Report: Jedd Fisch offered coaching position

Submitted by Moe on

Word from a Fox1 reporter suggest that Jedd Fisch, most recently the OC for the Jaguars (and OC at Miami (YTM)) has been offered the role of Passing Game Coordinator. Great hire if he does accept

College FB news -- I'm hearing ex-Jags OC Jedd Fisch will be offered the Pass Game Coordinator job at University of Michigan. @FOXSports1

He's never coached TE's before.  Has coached some WR here and there.  Just seems really weird to me.  With the emphasis Harbaugh is probably going to put on TEs, I would think he would want a TE's type guy.  Honestly, I wouldn't have been surprised to see Baxter double has a TE coach considering he's been a TE and WR coach for several years.

While the idea of someone with NFL OC experience is nice for a lower level assistant, what makes you call this a "great hire"? Just curious since the Jags had the worst NFL offense by a mile and that got him fired.

Either above or below (depending on how your feed works).  He did great things at Miami with their offense,  Before that he was with Seattle and worked under Carroll.  While Jacksonville was awful, I think it's more of an issue with their head coach and lack of talent.

When I look at his bio, I see a guy who has jumped in short stints from place to place taking usually lateral or slight demotional moves, then when he makes an upward move, he finds himself now out of a job pretty quickly.  He's still young and all, but that resume is different than, say, DJ Durkin that shows a clear upward trajectory in jobs and programs and who has lots of people banging at his door to get him to coach for them.  But that's just me I guess.  In Harbaugh we trust and all.

Fisch was in a tough situation with Jacksonville this season. His offense had a rookie quarterback, two rookie offensive linemen and three rookie wide receivers all starting or playing significant snaps.

Some people think he was the fall guy for HC Gus Bradley. The Jags were bad on offense this season but didn't have much to work with, having so many green players.

Players, including Blake Bortles, were shocked when they heard he was fired. I think he's a solid OC but a sacrificial lamb.

Either way, he has experience in major college football and the NFL. Seems like a decent candidate.

...From NFL OC to "Passing Game Coordinator" for a college team. Based on resumes alone, our coaching staff, if it comes together as projected, looks like it could go head-to-head with most NFL teams. And that's before you get to Harbaugh.

As a Miami fan, was sad to see Fisch go as OC to Jags. Stephen Morris flourished under him and the Canes had a very efficient offense the year before he was plucked by Jacksonville. Big, big fan.

How would that be a great hire?  I mean, trust in Harbaugh and all, but the guy hasn't been a coach for more than like two years at any one place and most recently got fired for throwing too many complex passing schemes at a professional, albeit rookie, QB.  The HC wanted more packaged plays.  Doesn't have the greatest resume, and then you've got an overload of OC/QB type guys on the offense under compared to defense.  Just seems weird and out of left field to me.  Offensive coaching staff would look like Harbaugh, Drevno, Wheatly, Dougherty, Fisch, possibly some TE guy (Fisch has never coach TE;s).  The defense would look like Durkin, Mattison, Jackson?  A bit unbalanced, doesn't it seem like?

It would be redundant. It would also be confusing, because I'm not sure why Drevno would leave a position as a run game coordinator on the west coast...for a job as a run game coordinator in the midwest, where he has no history.

Basically, you wouldn't have an offensive coordinator and a passing game coordinator. You would have someone in charge of the run and someone in charge of the pass, and they would be co-coordinators.
