CC: 49ers not trading Harbaugh
According to Chris Balas tweet, Harbaugh will simply be fired, and not attempted to be traded.
This is good news for UM, yes?

Their front page also has articles about Ray Rice being nominated for NFL Man of the Year and the Cardinals signing Tim Tebow.

They're so far on the edge of the internet that it took 3 days for the news to reach us,
I've been to the edge
And there I stood and looked down
You know I lost a lot of friends there baby
I got no time to mess around

Surely he is coming to Ann Arbor. The only smoke surrounding this coaching search has been from Harbaugh's campfire with the occasional Les Miles tidbit thrown in.

This is great news if they fire him THIS week. Nobody else will be able to talk to him except us since they all currently have coaches. If they wait until next week, I don't see how this helps us unless he has already agreed to come here.

Well seeing that he's a great coach and has more than proven himself at every stop-- yet by all accounts management dislikes him personally so much (as their employee) that they are almost gauranteed to make sure he doesn't coach there next season one way or another-- I'd guess they might fire him for the pure punitive and petty satisfaction of it. It happens.

if they fire him, won't they also owe him a buyout? Like how we stil are on the hook for firing Hoke?
Seems like if they are going to fire him, without even bothering to explore compensation from another NFL team (which doesn't have to be picks, could be conditional picks or a pile of cash), it seems like a good thing for Michigan... or neutral at worst.
If true, maybe word has been passed, because, otherwise, why wouldn't SF simply wait and see what other teams would offer? Even if its simply money?

Well, that's certainly the definition of "getting the band back together."
December 21st, 2014 at 11:56 PM ^
You commented before I could edit and remove the spaces between lines...and make the same joke.
May as well remove Durkin and insert Mattison and REALLY get the band back together. Can we find a way to get Hoke in as the DTs coach?
In all honesty...I'd LOVE to have Wheatley, Campbell and Moeller. Just because they fit that old (pre-Hackett abliteration) definition of "Michigan Man" and that pisses some people off shouldn't disqualify them.

Hasn't it been pretty well established that Wheatley isn't interested in coaching in college unless he's a coordinator? He's pretty seriously committed to an upward trajectory, Michigan or not.

The Harbaughness is not afraid of virgin coordinators.

I could see him getting the offensive coordinator or "run game coordinator" title instead of Moeller too.
Nothing really says either is coming...but I wouldn't be shocked if it was either.
Soup Campbell is just my personal pipe dream, just makes too much sense.
I just mentioned Koger because he is/was a GA
The defensive guys are obvious and Mike Mallory would be another pipe dream. Although, Harbaugh has shown that he likes a seperate special teams coordinator and getting Mallory would be a nice fit.

I would not be upset with DJ Durkin, though. We'd need as many southern recruiting ties as we could get, and hopefully Harbaugh would have a lot of pull on the West Coast to snag a few CA prospects.
Ugh I have to remind myself that this is all contingent on Harbaugh actually coming here.

The 49ers either will have Harbaugh as a coach next year or not, but either way, they are paying for him.

No just a football fan looking logically at the situation. Harbaugh could have left for UM any time he wanted to, unless it was actually written in the contract. As far as I know the NFL has standard competition clauses meaning no other NFL teams.
All this does is allows other teams earlier access.

OK, here's the latest. BTW, when i said Team ... I meant Hackett's team. Hackett has a few folks in the AD's office working through the holidays (including Sat and Sunday), collecting info. and ready to respond with anything that comes up.
1) They do NOT have word yet from Harbaugh's agent if he will come home. They still are expecting word today on serious interest level (see my post from last week for more info.). Again, if Harbaugh wants to entertain serious NFL offers before the Michigan decision then Hackett will look at plan Bs and start initial DIRECT discussions.
2) NO DIRECT discussions have occured with any plan Bs. Hackett has been clear that NO direct discussions will occur until Harbaugh's decides on if he's going to consider NFL offers.
3) The ceiling for Harbaugh is $53MM ... 48 and 5 (for the buyout) ... Hackett has the authority to move the 53 around any way he would like ... including bonuses for championships, etc. Harbaugh's agent discussed more performance based $ vs. salary because it will provide a more pallatable (sp?) story. The example given to me ... $6MM per year, $1MM for acedemic results, up to $1MM for on the field results .... and possibly 3 year rolling logevity bonusses ... Dumbtonio / Izzo model.
4) They believe that Harbaugh's agent has an understanding with the 49ers on the buyout. The agent is saying that this will help speed up the process after his last game. "Ready to Roll" as soon as the clock hits zero (referring to the last game).
5) Hackett is running the show ... pure executive doing his thing.
6) Tension is fairly high in the room ... it's a noticable change from last week to this week. Waiting on word today .... is a big deal.
7) I asked him at the end of the discussion, "What do you think?" His response ... "He comes home."
GO BLUE!!!
