John U. Bacon: "If I had a guess" one year from now, Brad Bates will be the AD and one of the two Harbaughs will be the HC
John U. Bacon, just wrapped an interview on the Hugh Show. When asked to guess who will be the HC of Michigan football one year from now, after giving several disclaimers and noting that it was just his guess, stated that one year from now, Brad Bates would be the AD and one of the two Harbaughs would be the HC.
He also said earlier in the interview that from talking to people who he knows who are close to Miles, Harbaugh and Harbaugh, he does not believe that any of that group would accept the HC spot with Brandon as AD.
Sorry, no link, as it was a radio interview.

Miss the old avatar with the combo Texas-Mitten. That was a very nice design.

JUB: Hey, has your wife told you anything about either of your brothers-in-law's plans next year?
October 8th, 2014 at 6:11 PM ^
The wrong family in mind.........I am fairly confident that his wife is not a relation of any Harbaugh or Miles. This is an honest question with no attempt to bust chops.
So would you please expand on your post?
Thanks very much.

and ye shall have your answer re: the Crean/Harbaugh family connection.
October 8th, 2014 at 8:34 PM ^
Yes - Crean is their bother in law. Doesn't really mean they like him ... just sayin.
Go Blue!

Whether that was intentional or not, that was still brilliant.
October 8th, 2014 at 5:04 PM ^
It's settled then. Dave Brandon needs to do what is best for the Team, the Team, the Team, and step down so one of the Harbaughs can be the next coach...because that is what is best for Michigan...and he cares about Michigan.

1. Brandon Leaves
2. Hoke Leaves
3. ???
4. Profit!

Why are we getting excited? The guy said it was a guess, and he made a huge disclaimer about it being a guess.
Bacon is clued in, and I'm a big fan, but to me, this sounds like nothing. Hopefully, his guess is right, though.

and looks like no end is in sight. Any bone thrown at us is cause for excitement.

Seems like he regularly gives a 'shout out' for big wins and you would think soccer upsetting #6 Notre Dame would warrant that
Very interesting indeed...
October 8th, 2014 at 5:14 PM ^
Im sure he doesnt even want to log into his twitter account and see all the negative tweets he is getting. He is very sensitive people!

This is how I picture Dave Brandon now.
"That hurts. "You're not getting to me. HE'S NOT GETTING TO ME!!!!"
October 8th, 2014 at 5:46 PM ^
Hoke showing some emotion...
October 8th, 2014 at 6:05 PM ^
I hear there is a rumor that Harbaugh, Harbaugh or Miles would be emotional if the right AD were in place.
October 8th, 2014 at 5:51 PM ^
Very interesting indeed: It is rare treat to have that imperious bastard take a week-long hiatus from praising himself and "his" department in public.
Based on his strategy and behavior during concussion-gate, I'd guess he's the hiding type. But I'm hoping he was also dressed-down by Schlissel!

He will never coach the Raiders. That is the worst job in the NFL. He will coach girls softball in the Bay Area before he coaches the Raiders.

Oh, that's just one man's opinion.
Unfortunately, that's my best guess, too (about the Raiders). I am curious about John, though, since Baltimore is such a mess right now.
October 8th, 2014 at 7:24 PM ^
Just based on pure speculation, John would have potential and would be an awesome choice:
Potential:
1) He already won his superbowl.
2) AA and Michigan affiliation.
3) His statement of denyal was more a statement of "I support the current coach". Which is a classy thing to do.
4) Existing relationship with Mattison.
5) I think he has young kids. Ann Arbor is a much better place to raise a family than Baltimore I hear.

I see your point but Bacon wouldn't make a guess without some info. Brandon's job isn't as secure as you may think Mrs. Brandon.
October 8th, 2014 at 6:27 PM ^
1. everyone on this site knows that--everyone
2. you act as if you are okay with Brandon yanking Bacon's credentials cuz he didn't like what he wrote. It is well-known in the media that Brandon will punish those he believes do not toe the line.
3. just cuz he may be persona non grata at the Athletic Department doesn't mean that he doesn't still have sources at the AD.
4. Bacon clearly has a myriad of other credible sources among athletes and people close to the program outside of the AD cabal.
October 8th, 2014 at 7:19 PM ^
I don't think Brandon should take away Bacon's, the Freep's, or anyone else’s credentials just because of what they wrote. I think that is a stupid way to win media friends and it lack character.
On the other hand you're not going to see anything positive from Bacon on Brandon. And anytime one person completely vilifies another you always have to 'question' their objectivity and agenda. Just think about Drew Sharp. And I do use the word 'question' rather than 'condem'.
October 8th, 2014 at 8:01 PM ^
if you really think they're analogous, I can't help you. Also, you have nothing to support you're thesis that Bacon is acting out of vindictiveness and is unwilling to be objective. In fact, outside of the Michigan AD, Bacon has a pretty damn good reputation for being a straight-shooter. It is "possible' that Bacon is correct and that Brandon is simply that bad.

In a thread a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned a rumor I had heard from two people:
http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/cc-bacon-hoke-likely-stay-until-december-br…
To summarize:
1. Brandon is gone soon (could even be in October)
2. New AD is hired (at the time it was between Manuel or Bates - seems Bates is leading candidate now) to work with Hoke on an exit that is nice and not a firing.
3. John Harbaugh is announced as the new HC. He doesn't want to follow a guy who's been fired, hence the buyout/walkaway/resignation agreement with Hoke
4. ???????
5. Profit
The pieces seem to be falling into place...excellent...excellent
October 8th, 2014 at 5:20 PM ^
I have a low bar for accepting anything that provides hope right now, but you could offer a little more information about these two people?
I mean, now we've all heard this from one person, and that's you.
October 8th, 2014 at 5:49 PM ^
"Two people" could literally mean two hobo's, two angry fans leaving the Minnesota game, two of his friends in a random conversation, two cokes, etc...
Needs more background.
October 8th, 2014 at 6:29 PM ^
Now, they could have both been full of shit or all a figment of my desire to get attention on a message board. Either way, my point was that the dominos (see that) are starting to fall in that direction, albeit very early tea leaf reading.
Rumormongoring is fun. As opposed to watching this team attempt to football, this is the most fun I've had this season. Brian's posts on coaches were far more fun than reading the UFR today.

October 8th, 2014 at 6:34 PM ^
Question: What would be the best way for Michigan to speak to AD and coaching candidates without having to worry about FOIA requests or computer hacks? Answer: By having hobos serve as messengers, their information stored solely in their heads (and perhaps their bindles), traveling between the parties by rail.

I have to ask and maybe this has been covered but is there any valid reason John would leave Baltimore? Are things bad there for him? Do they want him out?

If I remember correctly he mapped out hiring criteria for a head coach that didn't seem to match reality. And it didn't take into account the true profile of successful coaches. It was as if the criteria were laid out with a pre-determined result.
An example of one of his criteria was to have a coach with recruiting roots in the region. There were others like that.
Seemed the profile of a successful college coach at this high level was not mapped out. For example, Win/Loss record, attention to detail, management style, personality characteristics, charisma, leadership style, etc.
When you map out characteristics of top coaches you begin to see similarities:
1. Detail oriented (Saban, Brian Kelly, Chip Kelly, Gus Malzahn, etc.)
2. Strategic thinker
3. Leadership style - stubborn - process oriented
What would the new AD's criteria be?
