Maurice Hurst at fullback vs Miami (NTM)
Noticed they had him on the goal line for Green's TD run. Didn't see this mentioned anywhere, but if it already was, mods please delete.
Doing his best Will Carr impression. This is the only snap I can remember him being in at FB. Anyone else see him at fullback on Saturday for any other plays?
The play is at 13:39

why they'd waste that on Miami

I think its one of those things where even if you know it is coming, there is nothing you can do about it. It's not exactly a trick.

if we use him, they still have to deal with him, plus it could be used as a total decoy, he could run it, etc. We can do a lot with it. Imagine him getting the ball on 4th & short.

I want to see him run it. He did this as a junior in HS. Go 20 seconds into clip for TD.

That was a LONG run. Then he follows it up by dragging a guy to the endzone for the score!
Thanks for sharing this clip.

in that play. Is the defense going to play it any differently than if Kerridge was there?
We used to run it with Will Campbell too, probably some others. It's easy to remember Will Carr because he got a carry and it didn't end well.

they ran carr a number of times to no effect. i remember a lost fumble at the goal line too; purdue maybe in the ice bowl.

Was Carr #73 as well?
That would be cool if all 3 of them happened to wear 73.

He scored a TD once. I don't remember the game, but he definitely got one.
The fumble in the '96 Purdue game wasn't returned, but it killed our best TD chance that day.

I believe it was in the game against Michigan State in 1995. As I recall, Carr and Biakabatuka got the rushing TDs that we scored in that game. That might have even been Carr's longest run in that role too - it was perhaps 3 or 4 yards on the score.

If I remember right, Big WIll was in our jumbo package but as a lineman, not as a fullback.

Because people like you would be bitching even more if they didn't score?

That was a fun formation but I found it even more encouraging that a lead blocker was hardly needed on the play.

I think Hurst looked a little sad when he couldn't find anyone and had to just push the pile.
September 15th, 2014 at 1:24 PM ^
I think Hurst's high school team used him like that too, as a short-yardage / goal line FB, but yeah, I was immediately reminded of the days of William Carr when they put him out there on that play. As I recall, Carr was about 6'0'' and 270 pounds, and Hurst is a smidge bigger than that, I believe, so if we need someone who can eliminate hazards, if you will, with his own force as he or others cross the goal line, I am OK with that.
September 15th, 2014 at 2:31 PM ^
Hmm, I thought Carr was bigger than that - I think he was three bills.
September 16th, 2014 at 5:48 AM ^
The UM roster database lists Carr at 285 as a junior and 269 as a senior. I question the latter weight, but I don't think he was as heavy as 300.

Still Lloyd's most ill-advised game decision ever. Cost us that game.

and absolutely love it. He ran the ball in high school, so they could be setting up a big surprise for later in the season. You need to see how using Hurst in the formation will work in practice vs. theory, so no problem with lining up and running this against Miami. Looks like he will plow the road quite effectively.

Thx. Did not notice this substitution during the game, but maybe I was too nervous and toggled the DVR fast forward too quickly to make sure that we held the 17-10 lead.
Forced tape delay for me due to youth football, and I was OK with it since I didn't have to listen to the halftime analysis stating that we....ahem...underperformed in the 1st half.

Damn it! The last thing I need on my fantasy team is somebody vulturing goal line TD's! ;)

It almost always worked. He was always in during these situations, run or pass.
For Hurst who isn't paying starter's minutes at DT, giving him 10-12 plays on offense to remember isn't a big deal.
Love the idea for a guy with such explosion and great feet. He's through the hole and into the end zone before Green even gets the ball.
I'm not surprised at this, I'm suprised that a poster really would say something about them not "saving" this formation.
LOL - people are past the point of unrealistic and are now just making shit up to complain. Save what? He didn't even do anything except run through the hole and keep it sealed for Green? It wasn't even a trick play from the formation.
Anyway, good note on Williams, Bama used to clean up when he was in the game leading the way.

are being met with a guy with 50+ lbs more beef. Even if he doesn't moldboard plow someone below the level of the turf, at least its going to be an incredible edge "seal" and at worst force Green/Smith into a 1-on-1 with a wing player like a CB or Safety who probably doesn't have the mass to make such a momentum-stopping tackle in short yardage.
