Way, Way, Way, Way, Way Too Early Bowl Projections.

I hope they hit us with their 2015 Masters picks by the end of the day too.

happen, I think you could see a pretty significant drop off in traffic for the site, as well as TTB, etc., at least for football purposes. I think a lot of lifer Michigan football fans are about 1 more humiliation away from being all "to hell with this shit, I am going to the apple orchard."  I spent a Saturday or two there last fall actually.

I actually think the opposite is true. If the past year has taught me anything, it's that Michigan fans are never happier than when they're miserable. People love to come here and share their negativity with others, maybe it's cathartic to some, I don't know...but traffic to this site will be strong regardless.

through that during the Rich Rod years, but really not anymore.  I got tired of it last year and really did not come here during football season very much.  But that was when the point system was not up and going and the moderation was a bit hit and miss, resulting in the Mlive like content that I was tired of reading.  It may have been less about the state of the team than it was about the state of blog last year I guess.

this site is the site for personal schadenfreude.

I mean basically Brian's one exceptional talent is the ability to put misery into words (he is also talented at arguing to the teeth about spread offenses and other loves)... and we lemmings just come here to soak it in...

I know I come here for the misery... but I come much less often (as in only twice a day these days) and will come even more if we are firing hoke next year (gotta get the inside scoop without paying for it).

Exactly.  On Saturdays after a win, there is some but not much traffic here.  People go on and enjoy the rest of their days.  After a loss, people come to MGoBlog to vent, find out whose fault it is, share whose fault they think it is, and so on.

When you felt the coaches called the plays they should have, the receivers caught the balls they should have and the defense sufficiently stopped out opponent, there's nothing to come on and say.  You just go grab another beer and go on with your afternoon/evening.

We beat Notre Dame in 06!!  That was a big game.  And 07, 09, then there was the 2010 game, we won that one, then 2011.  Wait, I am starting to notice a pattern here.

I guess it depends what you consider "near the top" to be.  In the 13 seasons since 2000, after they went 13-0:

4 Top 5 final rankings (5, 3, 3, 5)

4 more top 10 final rankings (6, 8, 6, 6)

3 more top 16 finishes (11, 15, 16)

1 top 25 final ranking (22)

1 season finished unranked (2009 when they went 8-5)

Season AP Coaches
2001 6 6
2002 5 5
2003 3 3
2004 3 3
2005 22 22
2006 11 11
2007 8 8
2008 5 5
2009 N/R N/R
2010 6 6
2011 16 15
2012 15 15
2013 6 6

There will be lots and lots of drinks (more than usual) consumed during Christmas if Michigan plays in the Pinstripe Bowl. MGOBLOG would once again be an interesting read with a stellar insightful analysis of how many times the 'F word' is used during a game.

I cannot wait.  Don't shoot the messenger, but I've already reserved my spot for the National Championship parade in Ann Arbor, January 19th, 2015.

No B1G team is making that playoff*.  Ohio is going to lose some games with a new O-line, LB's, and no Hyde.  They'll still be quite good, but not less than two losses.  Same with Sparty.  I actually believe every team will have at least two losses in conference*.  And a two loss B1G team isn't getting into the playoff.

This is some of the most blatant click-bait I've ever seen from ESPN. And that's saying a lot these days. They really need to stop acting like they are a news outlet.

Everyone is projecting 4 or more losses this season. I bet we play much better this season, especially on defense! We will be a spoiler in some big games! 10 wins would not surprise me!

Man I HATE us being "under the radar".  I liked it a lot better back in the day when we were the the biggest motherfucking blip on the radar and everybody was gunning for us cause we were perenially a top 5 team or better.  I liked going into the season with a loaded cupboard of talent knowing that unless we played way under our ability or had a series of crazy bad breaks we would crush everything in our path on our way to our season-ending showdown with OSU and a date in the Rose Bowl about every other year.

And I liked SI Covers that looked like this.  A LOT....

EDIT - The post I was responding to showed up on mobile, but appears to be goe now.

So, it resonates with me.

Plus, it happened as recently as 2006, were you alive then?

It has only been 15 years since our last national title. Don't pretend it was before the invention of sliced bread.

Regardless, we all talk about stuff that happened before we were born without thinking it is running out of milage. Did you celebrate Memorial Day by saying that all the people who did in war before you were born should not be "reminisced" because they were running out of mileage.

Your's was a stupid post on multiple fronts.

you mean when we were habitually overrated, lost most of our bowl games and never could quite seal the deal?

I liked about 89-99.  I was 11-21.  those were good days when we won some big games... but even then we found a way to lose to purdue...

Not sure about the "perenially overrated" comment.  From 1970-1980 (coincidently when I was 11-21) we went 116-18.  Your ten year stretch was fantastic and had National Championship but the overall was 103-27 so I still like my era better.

But compared to today we're arguing about lobster vs filet while a plate of dog food is on the table.

Every team got their final rankings versus their preseason rankings compared for the past fifty years; you got points added for finishing higher than your preseason rankings and points subtracted for finishing below the preseason ranking.  We finished pretty easily in the top 5 most overrated.

Avon Barksdale

But that could be quite misleading. Any team that started out in the top 10 (as we always did) could've lost 1 game in a season and still been considered "overrated" by that theory.

For a good stretch, Michigan was always ranked 1-10 in the preseason. So, that study is saying if Michigan started out at number five in the preseason, went 9-2 during the season and finishd sixth in the final poll, they were overrated - which obviously wouldn't be the case.

It could also go the other way. Michigan could be classified as overrated by dropping one spot over the course of a season. In contrast, a school like MSU could've been unranked in the preseason, gone 6-3 with a loss to Michigan, finished 24th in the final poll and "overexceeded" their ranking.

#1 to open the season, then we lose to Wisconsin on the road! The one that still hurts is '86 loss to the Gophers at home. I was at that game, never felt worse!

Yeah, I miss the glory years growing up with Michigan football  in the 70s, being at school there in the early to mid 80s.

9-3, miss out on the B1G Championship game, Capital One Bowl vs. Florida or Alabama. We win 31-17 and start the 2015 season in the top 10. From there we end up in the CFB playoff as/and B1G Champs.
