21 Targets for 2015
At the request of several readers, the list below is of prospects that could actually become a part of the 2015 class. Obviously anyone with an offer could potentially wind up on this list if a visit were to be set up, or the coaches decided to put some serious pressure on. But that list gets unwieldy; who wants to watch 100 guys of whom three will probably end up in Michigan's class.
The prospects below are those who've already demonstrated legitimate interest, be it by setting up visits, releasing top lists, or clear statements expressing a high level of interest in Michigan. Each of them will score between a 3 and a 5 on “The Vibe." I expect no more than 4 or 5 of them will end up in the class, but 20% > 3%.
I asked most of them directly if they belonged on a list of recruits that were seriously considering Michigan. In some cases the responses were more forward than I expected and that tells me that Michigan is in serious contention with some of them.
-------------------------------------
Athlete (DB/WR)
Brian Cole – Heritage – Saginaw, MI
The battle for the top athlete in Michigan seems to be between Michigan and Michigan State. Cole has visited Michigan several times and has recently been visited by the coaching staff. Even though he’s an in-state recruit, he’ll be able to go anywhere he wants, and there's time yet for national programs to make their plays.

Defensive End
Jashon Cornell – Cretin Derham Hall – St. Paul, MN
Cornell will make his decision at the end of the summer on August 28 during his season opener. Cornell keeps to himself but a lot of people think that Notre Dame may have an edge as many former athletes from his high school have wound up in South Bend. Cornell plans to take a west coast tour this summer to check out UCLA, USC, and Stanford. Michigan is in good shape but it’s going to be a battle for such a talent.

Keisean Lucier-South – Lutheran-Orange County – Orange, CA
KLS has not been shy about how much he likes Michigan but reeling in Cali-kids is always tough to do. He had good things to say about Michigan though. “Michigan is actually doing really good in recruiting me. They send me letters every day and I think I belong on their list of possible commitments.” KLS doesn’t have any Ann Arbor visit plans lined up yet and the logistics of being in California will prove difficult.

It’s being reported that Ferrell will be in Ann Arbor this weekend, which bodes well for his recruitment. Before I learned of his visit plans, I’m not sure I’d have put him on this list. Ferrell told me he is really looking forward to checking out Ann Arbor for the first time, but he’s not close to a commitment at this time.

Conidered an Ohio State lock, Jones recently told me that he is really feeling Michigan and that the Buckeyes aren’t a shoe-in after all. He admitted that Ohio State was his leader but the Michigan coaches are doing very well with him and aren’t out of it yet. Jones visited Ohio State this past week and many thought he’d commit while there. He did not which makes his comments about Michigan seem more genuine.

Hilliard is being pulled in a lot of different directions by some of the top programs in the country.
He has visited Michigan multiple times but the competition for his signature may be as stiff as any recruit on this list. He’s been rumored to be a Notre Dame lean, an Ohio State lean, and possibly an Alabama lean. Those three schools recruit as well as anyone in the country, but Michigan is putting in work as well.

Tyriq Thompson – Detroit Martin Luther King – Detroit, MI
A lot of people assume Michigan is the eventual spot for Thompson as he’s a legacy (father is mid-'90s safety Clarence) offer and an in-state kid with a still-growing offer list. Tyriq himself isn’t so quick to say that. “I can’t really say if Michigan has a good chance with me or not since it’s going to be a while before I’m close to a decision. I’m just taking things slowly from here on out.” With the class projecting to contain about 12-15 members, Thompson may miss out on an opportunity to commit if he’s even considering that.

Grant Newsome – The Lawrenceville School – Trenton, NJ
Michigan recently missed out on Jake Fruhmorgen and Sterling Jenkins has completely ruled them out as a possibility. That leaves Grant Newsome as the lone highly rated OT with serious Michigan interest. Newsome told me that he definitely belongs on Michigan’s list of highly interested prospects. “I’m only visiting the schools that I’m really interested in.” Newsome will visit Michigan this upcoming weekend, but he won’t make a decision until the summer.

Damien Harris – Madison Southern – Berea, KY
I’m not sure much needs to be said here. Once a commit, now a highly coveted decommit. Harris is being vigorously pursued by Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes, he still remains a top priority for the Michigan coaches. He and his mother both really like Michigan still but it will be a battle between the good guys, Ohio State, and Kentucky.

Patrick told me that he plans to visit this summer and is thinking about taking one of his five official visits to Ann Arbor this fall. He just barely makes this list as I think he ultimately stays in the sunshine state.

Once thought of as a written-off prospect, the hiring of Doug Nussmeier (and Damien Harris's decommit) rekindled the flames between Michigan and Weber. Michigan State and Ohio State are also heavily involved so when he commits it’ll either be cause for celebration or worry.

The recruitment of Chris Clark has been a roller coaster as he surprisingly committed to North Carolina about a month ago, and not so surprisingly decommitted just about a week ago. He plans to take several visits including Michigan this weekend. Clark has always spoken highly about the Wolverines and I think his visit to Ann Arbor this weekend could put Michigan squarely in the mix.

Personally, I don’t think Michigan has a great chance with Mollette, but he did recently include the Wolverines as part of his top 5. He hasn’t planned any sort of visit yet but Michigan is putting in the necessary effort to stay in his mind. “Yeah I think I should be on Michigan’s short list. I keep a good relationship with Coach Manning and them up there. They have a chance.” I’ve heard Clemson is an early favorite for Mollette and a recent visit to Death Valley proves his high level of interest.

Harris has really opened things back up, and the Rivals guys are pretty confident in their report that Michigan is outside of his top 4.
Michigan will be in his final group as long as they have a productive ground game, but he probably should get a "Contender in a top 3-7" vibe.
Frustrating recruiting class to this point.
that's what 7-6 will do to you.
Not so much 7-6 as it is 27 for 27. An inability to have any sort of rushing game is death for high profile RB recruiting.
April 16th, 2014 at 10:05 AM ^
Possibly, but he is supposedly high on FSU, Alabama, Florida, and will be visiting Auburn this week.
I think all four of those schools will be very much in the mix with the three you listed.
be any concern that NONE of these are deemed as "trending blue"? It seems like we're #2 or #3 on everyone's list. With every scouting report I read I never get the feeling any of these kids are "two feet in". Just has me worried.
April 16th, 2014 at 10:15 AM ^

April 16th, 2014 at 10:40 AM ^
Keep in mind that we have commits who would be "trending blue"
April 16th, 2014 at 12:20 PM ^
Solidly in top 2-3 does not necessarily mean Michigan is #2 or #3. It can also mean we're the recruit's favorite or that BB doesn't know who the favorite is. Brandon can correct me if necessary, but I think trending blue is reserved for players he expects to commit here soon.
Last year at this time, I believe we had 5 commits for the 2014 class.
If guys were "two feet in," they would probably be committed by now.
Being in the top two or three is about all anyone can expect right now, because with the exception of a couple players here (such as Dre'Mont Jones), there's nobody as the clear #1. So we're in the same position as a couple other shools for most of these kids.
Ferns, Speight, Cole, Mone, Pallante, Harris, with Beatty, Ways, and Bunting joining prior to the end of April bringing that total to 9. The remaining seven committed before the beginning of the season.
I would be surprised if Michigan gets a fifth non-kicker before the end of April, and would also be surprised if they had more than half of their 16 or more spots locked up before the season starts.
from Peppers school, Juwan Bushel-Beaty.
I think Michigan is going to have their work cut out for them with this class. Whether its realistic or not, you know other coaches are telling them Hoke could be gone after another lackluster season at Michigan. The rebuilding sales pitch doesn't work anymore, and now Hoke and co. can only sell results on the field.
So they either do well on the field and turn some of these maybes into commits, or they flounder again, and fill out the class with "leftoevers." Or they get fired, and someone else finishes the class.
A jump would have been nice
April 16th, 2014 at 10:45 AM ^
Not sure why this is getting downvoted. I thought the same. It doesn't mean it's not valuable info; it just makes it easier to navigate the front page.
I disagree. I think the most popular posts should almost never have jumps. Jumps should be reserved for the dense statistical analyses, GIFathons, and dear diaries.

clemson must have awesome bag men.
April 16th, 2014 at 10:08 AM ^
Or they have been pretty successful as of late, have a young eccentric coach, a pretty awesome home atmosphere, Howards rock, and a fun balanced offense. Some big names have passed through there recently from the RB, QB, and WR positions.
Not every recruit cares about academics as much as others, so the success on the field stands out a little more to them.
Also, they probably have a pretty awesome bag man.
April 16th, 2014 at 10:49 AM ^
Clemson is not a bad school. Maybe not as good as some BIG schools, but better than a lot of others.
April 16th, 2014 at 12:26 PM ^
The number of elite-level recruits who truly care about academics to the extent that what Michigan has to offer is the deciding factor is much, much smaller than most Michigan fans would like to believe.
In other words, the vast majority of elite recruits come to college to get into the NFL, and the academic difference between Michigan and, say, Clemson or FSU or LSU is of little real significance.
C'mon Don. Take it easy on these people. You can't just dump that on them all at once. You have to feed them piece by piece until they come to the realization themselves (or at least they think they come to the realization themselves).

Last year, we had 2 camp offers that led to commitments (Watson and Canteen).
The year before it was Stribling.
I would expect another commitment or two to come from a camp situation.
April 16th, 2014 at 11:56 AM ^
That's ridiculous. Almost everyone on the recruiting list is a highly rated 4 star with maybe an odd 3 star guy thrown in. Unless the coaches see something the recruiting services are missing, there won't be any 2 stars. We are a long way from that.
April 17th, 2014 at 12:43 PM ^
Scout, Rivals and 247 all have him as a three star.
I think the only 2 starsMichigan has picked up are long snappers and kickers.

April 16th, 2014 at 10:26 AM ^
I like the vibe from Lucier-South, but the distance will be a big challange. Probably the sooner he can make a visit, the better.
Are there any other decent OL prospects if UM misses on Newsome as well?
April 16th, 2014 at 10:40 AM ^
People think Hoke and co can't close on top recruits late because other than Green, they really haven't been able to. With so much riding on this season for this recruiting class, if they want to reel in more top flight recruits to finish the class, they are going to have to be able to close.
So I don't think its that the perception has changed, or that we're spoiled, its that people are realistically looking at what will likely happen based on the past few years. It doesn't look like Michigan will have the majority of its class filled by the time the season starts, so that means they are going to have to close on kids late. And by the time the results are in on the season (November), a lot of these kids will have either committed elsewhere, or Michigan will have too much ground to make up.
So its pretty likely that they'll be in scramble mode at the end of the year and have to fill out this class with 3-stars instead of the 4 and 5-stars everyone would prefer.
April 16th, 2014 at 10:42 AM ^
I don't think Harris will end up at FSU b/c FSU is in very good position (probably leading) for both Patrick and J Frasier.
Question for the crowd: how important is Michigan's 2014 W/L record and James Franklin in your 2015 recruiting?
April 16th, 2014 at 10:54 AM ^
I think James Franklin is going through what Hoke has gone through in the past: New Head coach taking over a power program that has been a little "down" lately (obviosuly the situations of Michigan and PSU have been a little different). Also, PA is a state that produces a lot more talent historically for high school football.
Michigan will be fine. However, Michigan always has to compete with OSU and MSU and NEEDS to produce on the field (which MSU and OSU have done better lately).

April 16th, 2014 at 12:38 PM ^
How much does PSU lose from last year?
The last UM coach to beat PSU was Lloyd. Seems like a million years ago.
1) Penn State could fall hard this year. Their depth is paper thin and they are an injury or two away from a very lackluster team that could lose to the entire second half of their schedule. Remember, their depth chart quickly goes from Division 1 scholarship athlete to walk-on. Regardless, they should lose to us, MSU, and Ohio. 2) The Penn State game is a good metric of success for UM this season. Its at home and Penn State is decent, but not great. Unlike the calls to beat ND, Ohio, and MSU; I think a call to beat Penn State or bust is reasonable. It would be a good game to invite recruits who we are competing with Penn State for.
April 16th, 2014 at 11:01 AM ^
those are mutually exclusive topics, so I will treat them as such. Sorry if I misunderstood your intent.
(1) How important is Michigan's 2014 W/L record for 2015 recruiting? This is probably the biggest impact on the recruiting class we pull in. Recruits will look to our record as a factor of (a) stability of the coaching staff, and (b) potential long-term success of the program. Win on the field and you will win the recruiting battles.
(2) James Franklin - he's already had impact. Recruits seem to be flocking to him right now based on the "success" experienced at Vanderbilt. I think this helps him in the short-term but he will need to prove it on the field to sustain recruiting success. But for 2015, this will have a big impact on Michigan recruiting. Recruits we have offered have already dropped for PSU and others on this list are strongly considering PSU. The specter of sanctions seems to be on the wane and PSU recruiting is on the rise.
the specter of sanctions has not even hit yet and it is about to kick them in the teeth. Hard.
April 16th, 2014 at 10:54 AM ^
Thanks Brandon - I was one of the readers requesting this. With 200 or so offers a year by major programs this sort of thing helps to narrow it done even if we only get a few.
Michigan has cut down on the number of offers they're sending out. So far they've extended about 84 for the class of 2015, and last year there were 128. It's easier to follow Michigan recruiting than lots of other schools'.

No other OL on the horizon if Newsome goes else where??
Just don't believe Campbell has shut the door COMPLETELY on M,either.
April 16th, 2014 at 11:15 AM ^
I haven't followed recruiting too much due to the basketball season...and life but is there 0% chance for George Campbell? I know Florida, FSU, and Clemson have seemed to take the lead but would we be in the 3-7 contender category? I remember Mason Cole saying George still likes Michigan but I could be off base with that.
He's gone. Cole isn't around to talk to him and family members are pushing him pretty strongly to stay close to home. It was fun to have him as a commit, but he's not coming here.
