Stauskas Named First Team All-American by NABC
The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) has named Nik Stauskas a first-team All-American. This follows his being named second-team All-American by the Sporting News and being shut out of the USBWA All-America teams. He now has a very good chance of gaining second-team consensus All-American status, with just the AP left to name their choices (out of the four All-American honors used by the NCAA to determine consensus first- and second-team All-Americans).
Here's a rundown of Stauskas's postseason honors from the Michigan press release on this:
Nik Stauskas' 2013-14 Postseason Honors
• NABC All-America, first team
• Sporting News All-America, second team
• USA Today All-America, third team
• Big Ten Player of the Year
» Big Ten Coaches
» Big Ten Media
» Collegehoopsdaily.com
» CollegeSportsMadness.com
• All-Big Ten, first team
» Big Ten Coaches (only unanimous selection)
» Big Ten Media (only unanimous selection)
» Collegehoopsdaily.com
» CollegeSportsMadness.com
• USBWA District V Player of the Year
• USBWA All-District V Team
• NABC All-District, first team
Corrected consensus All-American info: The consensus picks are determined by assigning 3 points for first team, 2 for second, and 1 for third (if there is one). The top five plus ties are named consensus first team; the next five plus ties are second team. Here's what the standings look like, with the AP picks still to come:
9 - Nick Johnson, Arizona
9 - Doug McDermott, Creighton
9 - Jabari Parker, Duke
8 - Shabazz Napier, UConn
8 - Russ Smith, Louisville
-------------------------------------------
7 - Sean Kilpatrick, Cincinnati
6 - Andrew Wiggins, Kansas
5 - Nik Stauskas, Michigan
4 - Cleanthony Early, Wichita State
4 - C.J. Fair, Syracuse
--------------------------------------------
3 - T.J. Warren, North Carolina State
2 - Melvin Ejim, Iowa State
2 - Marcus Paige, North Carolina
2 - Fred VanVleet, Wichita State
2 - Scottie Wilbekin, Florida
It appears that the only way that Stauskas would not be a consensus second-team All-American would be for Early, Fair, and Warren all to pass him, which seems highly unlikely as Warren would have to be named first team by the AP.
Here's the list of Michigan's consensus second-team All-Americans:
- Cazzie Russell - 1964
- Bill Buntin - 1965
- Henry Wilmore - 1972
- Campy Russell - 1974
- Phil Hubbard - 1977
- Glen Rice - 1989
- Rumeal Robinson - 1990
- Jalen Rose - 1994
Great for Nik. Also great for kids in in the Toronto area. You can't ask for a better role model going forward. Distinguished company for sure. Go Blue!
For years every time you post, I put my nose up onto my screen to get a closer look at that avatar. If I get eye cancer from being so close to the screen, could you kindly private message me your billing address so that I might mail you my medical bills? Alternatively, do the MGo community the favor of occasionally posting the screensized version of that glorious dame.

It took me years to figure out how to post an avatar now you want me to address sizing issues? Oh boy!

Well it has been awfully cold around here this winter...
Wiggins and Ejim too.
You know, it seems like it is one thing when the threads about Nik's numerous honors come out individually (as did Trey's last season), but then you see the list presented like this and the first thing that comes to mind for me is "Wow...what a season indeed...". It is great to see yet another player from this program have a great season and pick up what seems like an endless stream of accolades along the way. It can only help Nik and and it can only help Michigan moving forward.
Congratulations to him on yet another honor.

That would really honour him. LOL

Quick, someone forward this award list to Luke Kennard!
I have to agree with you. But I have to wonder if McGary intends on staying for one more year if he's talking to Nik about maybe making one more run at it.
a great example of Coach B. and his recruiting skills. I remember when Nik was being recruited, and was looking forward to seeing him in a maize and blue uniform. He could shoot the lights out, and has developed into a first round draft pick. I would love him to stay for another year, but can't blame him if he goes. Go Blue!
i remember thinking when nik came on board that we finally would have a solid three point shooter for 4 years. well, not so much. he became more than just a shooter...
Most people suffer from bad hair days. Unlike Nuss who's blessed with an excellent coif, Nick Cage has long suffered from a bad hair life.
Based on how he completely came out swinging the entire season and performing in every way imaginable. He's an unselfish player who stepped up big time.
The honor is well deserved.
Wait, so the USBWA named him their District V Player of the year over the kid from Cincinnati, but the kid from Cincinnati was named a USBWA All-America (2nd Team) and Stauskas wasn't? How, exactly, does that make sense?
Maybe the USBWA took the All-American moniker a little too literally.
March 26th, 2014 at 12:48 PM ^
It doesn't make sense, but it's probably a result of different sets of voters being involved. For the district picks, I'm guessing only voters within the district can vote. The All-Americans are voted on by the USBWA writers nationally. Thus the nonsensical result.
Well done mister!
Congrat's Nik!
On a different note, the USBWA must have been hitting that pipe hard during their deliberations for All-American selections. How in the world is Stauskas not at least a second-team pick?
The consensus is that consensus means a general agreement.
When Burke played his last game with us, I didn't affect me as much as it will Stauskas....
we're gonna miss him more than most realize here... what a shooter... wow.....
I hope he starts taking 40 shots a game from here on out.

...and making 30-35 of them.

1 point first team, 3 points 3rd team... wouldn't lowest score be the first team?
March 26th, 2014 at 10:27 AM ^
I messed that up—3 for first team, 1 for third. Since I can't edit the above, I'll transfer a corrected version into the OP.

TJ Warren is from NC State, right? I don't watch a tremendous amount of basketball, but I thought that was the kid melting down against St. Louis. One game sample and all, but I would have never guessed he was an AA. Only saw the last 10 minutes of that game though, which were probably the worst of his basketball life.

Thanks for the corrections.

If the AP does too and he doesn't get consensus 1st team that'd be a shame.
Nik is about a lock for 2nd team All-American, though and that's awesome for him.
March 26th, 2014 at 10:56 AM ^
But Smith is bound to get at least 2nd team by the AP, which would give him 10 points. That would assure him of finishing no worse than tied for 5th. So he's virtually certain to be consensus 1st team.
March 26th, 2014 at 11:37 AM ^
then they just all are consensus?
March 26th, 2014 at 11:48 AM ^
That's the way the NCAA has it structured (as I believe I explained above). The top five plus ties get first team; the next five plus ties get second.
March 26th, 2014 at 10:01 AM ^
Not to discredit him at all, but I never thought this was possible a year ago. Watching these tourney games from a year ago on BTN, Nik couldn't stay in front of his guy to save his life, he disappeared far too often with Burke, Hardaway and McGary ahead of him, and really never once created his own shot. He has some remarkable strides in such a short time. Even on defense, while he's still not great at that end, he's has improved exponentially from last year's tournament through this entire season (and we will need him lock down Richardson on Friday).
It gets me to thinking who could make the big jump next year. Would love to see Walton and Irvin make a better jump than Stauskas and LeVert did.
