OutKick: Jim Harbaugh/Chargers Negotiations Past Salary Stage
Article says salary <$18M/year reported by some sources.
January 23rd, 2024 at 10:00 PM ^
To my big brother, Jim, the richest man in town.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:15 PM ^
No college football program is going to pay 20 million a year base salary for any coach. Full stop. Saban had 7 national championships to his name and Bama was only paying him just under 11.5 million base salary a year before they moved his office to the parking lot.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:36 PM ^
Outkick, a product of junior year students at MSU and OSU?
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:55 PM ^
It's worse.
It's Eleven Warriors and RCMB level stuff that an article from Outkick is posted here and taken seriously.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:38 PM ^
The article says LAC has offered more than the $12.5M U-M has offered but less than the $18M Sean Payton is making in Denver. All this according to “NFL Sources”.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:43 PM ^
I'm still not used to "LA Chargers" and see LAC as the clippers which is probably right because the Chargers went from the beloved team of San Diego to the Clippers of the NFL
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:57 PM ^
The Clippers moved from San Diego to LA as well. 40 years ago. They actually got some Angelenos to root for them for a couple of those 40.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:57 PM ^
It's an article from freaking Outkick. Of course it's not believable.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:39 PM ^
They threw in that they are still negotiating on the GM and staff, so the hiring could hit a snag. - Nice hedge. So Harbaugh could turn down the job or the Chargers hire someone else and this reporter can claim they couldn’t agree on the details and went their separate ways. I’m sticking with nobody knows crap and until there’s a formal announcement, I won’t believe anything I read.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:59 PM ^
I kind of wonder why these NFL teams don't hire the GM first, and then get the coach? But what do I know.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:41 PM ^
I clicked the link and saw a video with Dan Dakich. I then preceded to leave the link.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:42 PM ^
This is reminding me of one of those nature videos where some obscure bird is trying to mate with another bird by dancing around and flapping it's wings and shit. And nobody knows if the bird is doing a good job or not. The other bird could get boned or just fly off at any second. We're just left watching and trying to make sense of it.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:51 PM ^
But is it a nervous bird
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:50 PM ^
I'm certain Jim can get a fine job in LA and probably find some success with them (maybe a Superbowl but I wouldn't hold my breath)... yet would he (and his family) truly be *happy* there? Setting aside the connections they all have in Ann Arbor (and having grandma & grandpa nextdoor), and to the university itself (and a city and massive alumni/fan base that loves him)... would a city like LA really offer that?
How much of LA sports fans are really "Chargers fans" anyway? That city seems yo rotate pro franchises every few decades anyways. Where is the personal connection... where is the passion?
Not only that, but how would he feel if (God forbid), much of what he spent the past debuted building (and *re*-building) here collapses because of the turmoil from his departure? Yes: we have 3-0, we have three Big Ten titles, a Rose Bowl win, and a NC trophy. Impressive accomplishment... but if we end up in the proverbial wilderness again for another 5-10 years?
Bo is still Harbaugh's role model (along with Jack). Neither just up-and-left their teams without setting a plan in place - not just picking a replacement but keeping things stable for the transition. I would be shocked in Jim didn't do the same... especially for a place that meant more than just another career stop.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:56 PM ^
I mean 17 road games. A franchise with zero fan base. Living in a city whose only advantage is warmer weather. Is he that desperate to get away from the NCAA and perhaps the U-M administration?
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:03 PM ^
1. LA, like any other place, loves a winner--so the fans will come if they win.
2. ~18M, even in California, will buy a nice house with an in-law suite/wing for his parents.
3. I think the "personal connection" is winning an SB, that's all the challenge he needs.
4. My hot take: Harbaugh was always going to the NFL after this year but didn't want to seem like he was abandoning UM so he made contract demands he knew they couldn't meet.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:17 PM ^
Harbaugh has a 5% chance of winning the Super Bowl with the Chargers in my opinion. I think Herbert is a good quarterback, but not elite in the NFL. I have watched 4 of his games, and albeit it is a small sample-size, nothing screamed leader like Dan Marino, John Elway, Drew Brees, etc.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:26 PM ^
He has a 0% chance of winning a SB at Michigan.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:26 PM ^
What would you have said his chances were at Michigan of winning a NC (either when he took the job, or after the 2020 season)? Or heck, even beating OSU three years in a row. Be honest!
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:29 PM ^
Herbert is far from elite, and the Chargers aren't going to win shit. But good luck with everything coach. Hope you're not in town when the Big One hits.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:39 PM ^
I would hope that all Michigan fans would be able to handle this with the same kind of dignity and class as you.
/sarcasm
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:33 PM ^
If Jim knew 100% he was leaving, he should have said said so. Losing him is an injury to the University either way, but making it look like U-M’s fault when it was a foregone conclusion seems too cowardly for coach.
Then again, I don’t know the guy. Just the idealized version of him in my mind. All I know is he’s gone and I’m not as bitter as I expected to be. Sherrone can probably keep this ship running for a year at least while he gets his wheels under him at the big desk.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:43 PM ^
"Then again, I don’t know the guy. Just the idealized version of him in my mind."
So what you are saying is that It's not him. It's you.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:32 PM ^
Jim has been living at least part time in California since he was 17 years old. It’s just as much home to him as Ann Arbor.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:50 PM ^
Honestly if he's gone this last year did an amazing job of setting up Sherrone who I would expect as the next HC. I don't blame Harbaugh but I do blame the AD who kicked dirt in harbaughs face after the covid year and docked his pay. Harbaugh hasn't even publicly complained but I'd be hurt if I were him....and I would ask for assurances in the event of downturns that eventually come...
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:06 PM ^
Did it really prepare Sherrone though?
He was the HC on the sidelines for almost half the games this season, but aside from those 4-5 days he was still just the OC.
I completely understand wanting to keep him for continuity and player retention, but for we want to put Michigan football in the hands of someone who has never been HC at any college program, let alone a large P5? Even Hoke had some HC experience.
I'm not against having Sherrone be HC... it could be an amazing home run. Just seems like a risk (not too dissimilar from Juwan's situation)... maybe bring in an assistant with experience to help guide him? McElwain maybe?
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:36 PM ^
Agree, hope I’m terribly wrong but this just feels like David Shaw all over again.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:59 PM ^
I'd rather go after Lance Leopold or the Kansas State guy and keep a mix of Michigan guys on the staff. I don't think Moore will be a good head coach. Beating Ohio State in the field was great but Harbaugh was running everything all week up until the game. He's a great coordinator, but he should be head coach somewhere else first. Michigan needs someone proven.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:34 PM ^
I think some big name coaches will be interested in our coaching job. Though Moore could be a great coach as well.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:00 PM ^
Isn’t Outkick on the mgoban list? If not, they should be.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:58 PM ^
They absolutely should be.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:01 PM ^
Why would he want to go somewhere named after a whale's vagina?
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:42 PM ^
There's not even a football team there!
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:51 PM ^
I believe that etymology appies to San Diego itself and not the Chargers organization which, sadly for everyone involved, is now in Los Angeles.
LA is, of course, the City of Angles, producing more than two million protractors every year.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:06 PM ^
Past the salary stage onto the rose ceremony.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:06 PM ^
If this is what he and his family want good luck and thanks for the great memories especially the last three years !!!
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:09 PM ^
If it's only Outkick saying this, given their site owner's strong propensity for being wrong, Jim's probably negotiating with Atlanta or staying at Michigan
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:44 PM ^
I heard Alabama is gonna make him an offer soon.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:17 PM ^
Let's keep focused on the POSITIVES.
This can be GOOD for MICHIGAN. (Hate to see Jim, et.al. leave)
Head Coach at a desirable NFL location for "drafting" Michigan DUDES over the next several seasons, so we keep the UM train operating with Moore, etc. and we re-load. Then, there's a recruiting advantage saying "help Michigan win and NFL is calling" with John/Jim heading up two franchises. End of the day, for everybody - its about championships AND MONEY.
Build and expand the UM army to the NFL.
Go Blue.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:20 PM ^
harbaugh will have chargers competing at high level and in the playoffs every year. That is a given. Los Angeles will get a big name attraction coach in a big city...just what the NFL in Los Angeles craves and what the league wants. Chargers will be must watch tv next season.
The most interesting thing will be the final farewell he gives ann arbor, his players and his coaches when he exit's stage left.
I'm thinking Warde Manual based on his contrarianism will bring in his own guy to take his place and not give moore the job. Things will be off the chart the next couple weeks. obviously warde does not know what he's doing hiring coaches (Juwan) so anything is possible and he's lliable to easily screw this up
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:30 PM ^
I don't believe Moore will be the next coach because Rico Beard said it wouldn't happen. Why, you ask? Because Sherrone is the wrong "paint color" for Michigan. It must be horrible to live in Rico Beard's world.
January 24th, 2024 at 2:44 AM ^
I mean… Sherrone would be the first black head coach at Michigan. Whether that’s due to innate bias vs circumstance who knows.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:40 PM ^
It will 100 percent be Sherrone. Some risk sure, but he's earned the opportunity.
January 23rd, 2024 at 9:04 PM ^
A lot of risk. Let's not be naive. He was only a "head coach" for 12 hours. Harbaugh was still the coach during the week when he was suspended, just not at game time.
We hope it will work out. But there is no empirical evidence it will work out. It would be a substantial leap of faith.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:27 PM ^
Juwan was a widely praised hire who has not worked out as well as hoped … it happens. Pray tell who is Warde’s guy? Mike Hart? Really no idea …
Regarding playoffs every year … somewhat unclear on that for sure. A LOT of competition and tie breaker variation. Once he makes them though … watch out.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:38 PM ^
obviously warde does not know what he's doing hiring coaches (Juwan)
Warde hired Brandon Nautato.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:43 PM ^
If there are no NCAA issues, he re-signs right? OSU knew that all it would take was one controversy to throw Michigan “leadership” off its feet and unable to cater to Harbaugh with contract language like Kansas did so easily to Self. So now we can be bitter at OSU, Big Ten, NCAA, AND Michigan. Perfect follow up for winning a title.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:25 PM ^
🙈🙉🙊
Hey folks I'm jumping into a yellow submarine. Somebody please clang on the submarine when this whole thing is over.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:30 PM ^
If this is true then it is time to get the new staff in place. Can’t lose anymore time in bad faith negotiations on both parties‘ parts. Hope we can salvage some recruits.
