Just Fields granted immediate eligibility
February 8th, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
His and Shea’s situation are not even close to the same so they shouldn’t even be compared. It’s done, it’s over and he can play. I’ll reserve my judgement of Fields and his talents until I see him play.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
And the NCAA will probably make Martell sit a year.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:10 PM ^
In general and non-specific to the Fields case, can we agree that the transfer rule is ridiculous and pointless? The whole basis of the rule, claims the NCAA, is to allow students-athletes the time to focus on academics and acclimate to their new school. This makes absolutely no sense considering that they are still allow to practice and watch games from the bench. So the only difference between someone who is a starter and someone who has to sit out a year is that they don't travel to any of the away games? And I'm not sure this is even true for basketball Didn't Matthews watch the games from the bench at away games or am I remembering wrong? Secondly, grad transfers are eligible to play immediately. So a players needs a year off to figure out the differences between freshman and sophomore year of college but a graduate doesn't need any time to adjust to graduate school at a new institution after finishing undergrad somewhere else? The rule is so baseless and so clearly designed to give administration as much control as possible over student-athletes.
In the case of Fields, what logic is there to granting him an exception with the current rules? Why would someone saying something racist to you, at your old school, mean that you need to play football right now at your new school? First, the person in question was kicked out of the university so how anyone could argue that there's a safety issue? Even if there WAS a safety issue, what difference in safety is there between playing at your new school vs. not playing?? Is there less of a chance that this guy attacks Fields if he's the starter as opposed to sitting on the bench?? This whole song and dance is so ridiculous and makes the NCAA so transparent in its goal of making as much money as possible by giving a popular school a talented player that will generate more interest, and thus, more money.
Fuck the NCAA.
February 8th, 2019 at 6:01 PM ^
If the basis of the rule were really to allow transferees time to acclimate to their new school, they wouldn't allow freshmen to be eligible. Gotta be a sham rationale.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:13 PM ^
Are you fucking kidding me? He had no basis for immediate eligibility. Like many others have stated, this opens it up for anyone in the future to be granted immediate eligibility whenever they want it.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
Fuck it.
Let's find out why he couldn't beat out Fromm.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
What a fucking joke.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:23 PM ^
In other NCAA news, Ed Davis has been granted a seventh year of eligibility.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
That is so f*cked up, based on his case and let alone how fast too, someone involved ncaa got paid most likely
February 8th, 2019 at 6:51 PM ^
There is another crap take based on anger and complete ignorance of the facts.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:27 PM ^
Not surprised. That doesn’t make it any less of a piece of horseshit. It is straight up free agency now, and programs are going to have to adjust.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:29 PM ^
Shocking.....
February 8th, 2019 at 5:35 PM ^
He better not lose a game because he is going to hear worse in Ohio.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:35 PM ^
Unfortunately,
This really upsets me.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:36 PM ^
I think Sam Webb made the good point that the NCAA wasn't going to want to touch the question of how much racism is enough to justify a penalty-free transfer. The easiest thing to do was just say that any amount was enough.
February 8th, 2019 at 6:34 PM ^
I agree, this is exactly why it got approved and very quickly
February 8th, 2019 at 8:56 PM ^
Well that and the point no one is talking about, UGA didn’t contest the elegibility.
February 8th, 2019 at 6:46 PM ^
But doesn't that set a questionable precedent?
Now any player can transfer and receive immediate eligibility with any ambiguous "hostile environment" claim.
February 8th, 2019 at 6:53 PM ^
They called him the N-word...
February 8th, 2019 at 7:12 PM ^
While true, that's not why he left. He left because he wasn't playing. The name calling is just leverage to refrain from sitting out a year.
February 8th, 2019 at 8:58 PM ^
Nobody is calling that acceptable behavior. Also, “they” was one person. Who was kicked out of school. Even as an OSU fan, you can’t say with a straight face that he would have transferred if he was the starter. The harassment is just pretext.
Oh, and OSU allegedly overlooked racism by Zach Smith, who was on the coaching staff. Shouldn’t you be more worried that Day might lose two games in his first year and be run out of town for not being St. Urban?
February 8th, 2019 at 9:04 PM ^
“they” was one person. Who was kicked out of school.
Not to support this clown, however in the interest of accuracy, I believe the person who used the racist language was a baseball player and was removed from the team, but not kicked out of school.
February 9th, 2019 at 10:35 AM ^
A lot of issues here - first the student was a baseball player. Fields is a MLB prospect and was going to play baseball. Fields felt he could not play baseball on the same team as the player who called him a N or that players friends.
Second, the player was not kicked out of school. His scholarship to play baseball was taken away but he was allowed to remain enrolled. The player eventually left to play baseball elsewhere. But he left on his own and his friends are still on the team.
Third - the alleged racism rumor McMurphy started has been proven to be a lie. It was said by an ex-players father. The player and his mother came out and said not only did it not happen but they had not spoken to the father in years. It was just someone who McMurphy paid for a story and the story ended up biting him. Also, it was supposed to have happened in front of the entire team. All of the African American players stepped forward and agreed with the player that it never occurred.
Hate OSU all you want but at least get the stories straight.

Hate OSU all you want but at least get the stories straight.
I don't hate them, and would prefer accuracy. Thanks for chiming in.
Fields is a MLB prospect and was going to play baseball. Fields felt he could not play baseball on the same team as the player who called him a N or that players friends.
This is completely irrelevant unless he plays at OSU. Since I'm quite certain he's not, it has zero impact on his decision to leave and/or attend OSU.
His scholarship to play baseball was taken away but he was allowed to remain enrolled.
Yes, we've already covered this and some folks at Mgoblog did not know it.
The player eventually left to play baseball elsewhere.
So, then it's a non issue, right? Why would Fields need to leave if they guy is gone?
his friends are still on the team.
Why is this relevant? If I do something wrong what does that have to do with my friends? Are we assuming just because someone is friends with another person they endorse everything they do?
the alleged racism rumor McMurphy started has been proven to be a lie.
Who is McMurphy?...the baseball player, the journalist, someone else?
All of the African American players stepped forward and agreed with the player that it never occurred.
Do you have a source for this? Why would the NCAA grant Fields immediate eligibility if nothing happened?
February 9th, 2019 at 2:50 PM ^
My bad. I forgot it is MSU that enables the racists and OSU that enables the domestic abusers. Your school is still trash, and I still believe that Fields wouldn’t have transferred if he was the starter. Thanks for clarifying.
February 9th, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
I still believe that Fields wouldn’t have transferred if he was the starter.
I agree with you.
Your school is still trash
My school? Uhhh I'm a UM fan. Just because I corrected you for posting something inaccurate doesn't mean I'm a rival fan.
February 10th, 2019 at 4:35 PM ^
Patterson wouldn't have transferred if he had been the starter either.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:39 PM ^
The only reason I have feelings about this is because Ohio State gets something they need. I hate the fact that players are treated so hypocritically compared to coaches when it comes to movement. I feel this is gonna be a free agency type situation every year now with hardship waiver after hardship waiver being filed. The bar has been sufficiently lowered and people are more aware of what happens so the NCAA is going to have a hard time rejecting too many. It won't stop them at first, but there will be torch and pitchfork mobs. As a fan it saddens me, because I want to see the players at Michigan and do well for Michigan. But it is more fair for them to be able to change teams and transfer schools like any other student.
February 8th, 2019 at 6:07 PM ^
The only reason this bothers you is because players want IN Ohio State and OUT of Michigan.
February 8th, 2019 at 7:09 PM ^
Don't you have anything better to do with your time?
February 8th, 2019 at 10:04 PM ^
Not at the moment. Right now pointing out the delusions and thinking errors in these arguments is entertaining.
February 9th, 2019 at 7:52 AM ^
Having a discussion where you point out the things you disagree with is welcomed from all perspectives. Being a dick is not.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:39 PM ^
So can someone please explain how Shaw has to wait like a year to find out and this jackass gets in within weeks of transferring?
February 8th, 2019 at 8:33 PM ^
Ole Miss contested Shea's waiver. Georgia did not contest Fields'. Michigan took almost 2 months to file the required paperwork. Ohio State filed the day Fields transferred. Ole Miss was the main reason Shea had to wait so long though. If Georgia would have fought like Ole Miss, this would have dragged out in the same fashion.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:42 PM ^
NCAA is a joke. They might as well make it so everyone can transfer whenever they want and not have to sit out a year. It took them 6 months to make a decision on Patterson. Only 2 weeks for Fields. Someone called him the N word and he gets to transfer with no penalty. Only because the fuckeyes paid them off. I hate them fucks.
February 8th, 2019 at 6:09 PM ^
Patterson's case took longer because Ole' Miss filed a complaint and tried to block the transfer. They fought it all the way with the NCAA. Stop being a baby.
February 8th, 2019 at 8:16 PM ^
Is it possible that there was more to what happened than what the general public knows? And please show evidence they’ve ever paid off players, and if that was all it took, why couldn’t they land him last year?
February 8th, 2019 at 5:44 PM ^
This appears to be the nail in the coffin for the transfer rule. Anybody know any RBs or DTs unhappy with playing time we can poach?
February 8th, 2019 at 6:10 PM ^
None that want to play for Michigan.
February 8th, 2019 at 6:39 PM ^
Please go away and let the grown folks talk,
February 8th, 2019 at 5:50 PM ^
We should hear any minute now that Aubrey Solomon is getting his waiver to play immediately at Tennessee. I mean after all, he had a very bad situation at Michigan. I mean, he had to put up with......wait, what?
February 8th, 2019 at 5:58 PM ^
If he did apply because of homesickness then that is a valid reason for a waiver.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:52 PM ^
Not gonna lie...I liked our chances in the game a lot better before just now. Oh well, it's never gonna be easy against those guys. We have to get over the mountain of recruiting and talent that exists down there some day. Hopefully the guys are up for the challenge.
February 8th, 2019 at 5:54 PM ^
Did you really have any belief that he would not be eligible?
February 8th, 2019 at 7:07 PM ^
It didn't seem to meet the burden of evidence for waiving the year out from what I heard, but what the heck do I know.
February 9th, 2019 at 9:02 AM ^
Nothing...
February 9th, 2019 at 9:09 AM ^
Thank you for your contribution to the thread.
February 9th, 2019 at 11:04 AM ^
Think about it like this - in todays world where everyone gets offended by everything. Would the NCAA announce in February, which is African American History month, that it was going to force an African American player to stay where he was verbally assaulted by a white athlete of the same university? There is no way in the world they wanted to touch this issue.
If they would have said no - the media would have had a field day, no pun intended. Not only are the players not paid but now the NCAA is telling an African American player that he has to stay and take the abuse if he wants to play this year. There would be protests. There would be marches. There would be players leaving college and going to one of the new pro leagues.
The NCAA had no choice!
