In general and non-specific to the Fields case, can we agree that the transfer rule is ridiculous and pointless? The whole basis of the rule, claims the NCAA, is to allow students-athletes the time to focus on academics and acclimate to their new school. This makes absolutely no sense considering that they are still allow to practice and watch games from the bench. So the only difference between someone who is a starter and someone who has to sit out a year is that they don't travel to any of the away games? And I'm not sure this is even true for basketball Didn't Matthews watch the games from the bench at away games or am I remembering wrong? Secondly, grad transfers are eligible to play immediately. So a players needs a year off to figure out the differences between freshman and sophomore year of college but a graduate doesn't need any time to adjust to graduate school at a new institution after finishing undergrad somewhere else? The rule is so baseless and so clearly designed to give administration as much control as possible over student-athletes.
In the case of Fields, what logic is there to granting him an exception with the current rules? Why would someone saying something racist to you, at your old school, mean that you need to play football right now at your new school? First, the person in question was kicked out of the university so how anyone could argue that there's a safety issue? Even if there WAS a safety issue, what difference in safety is there between playing at your new school vs. not playing?? Is there less of a chance that this guy attacks Fields if he's the starter as opposed to sitting on the bench?? This whole song and dance is so ridiculous and makes the NCAA so transparent in its goal of making as much money as possible by giving a popular school a talented player that will generate more interest, and thus, more money.
Fuck the NCAA.

If the basis of the rule were really to allow transferees time to acclimate to their new school, they wouldn't allow freshmen to be eligible. Gotta be a sham rationale.

I think Sam Webb made the good point that the NCAA wasn't going to want to touch the question of how much racism is enough to justify a penalty-free transfer. The easiest thing to do was just say that any amount was enough.

Oh, and OSU allegedly overlooked racism by Zach Smith, who was on the coaching staff. Shouldn’t you be more worried that Day might lose two games in his first year and be run out of town for not being St. Urban?

A lot of issues here - first the student was a baseball player. Fields is a MLB prospect and was going to play baseball. Fields felt he could not play baseball on the same team as the player who called him a N or that players friends.
Second, the player was not kicked out of school. His scholarship to play baseball was taken away but he was allowed to remain enrolled. The player eventually left to play baseball elsewhere. But he left on his own and his friends are still on the team.
Third - the alleged racism rumor McMurphy started has been proven to be a lie. It was said by an ex-players father. The player and his mother came out and said not only did it not happen but they had not spoken to the father in years. It was just someone who McMurphy paid for a story and the story ended up biting him. Also, it was supposed to have happened in front of the entire team. All of the African American players stepped forward and agreed with the player that it never occurred.
Hate OSU all you want but at least get the stories straight.

This is completely irrelevant unless he plays at OSU. Since I'm quite certain he's not, it has zero impact on his decision to leave and/or attend OSU.

The only reason I have feelings about this is because Ohio State gets something they need. I hate the fact that players are treated so hypocritically compared to coaches when it comes to movement. I feel this is gonna be a free agency type situation every year now with hardship waiver after hardship waiver being filed. The bar has been sufficiently lowered and people are more aware of what happens so the NCAA is going to have a hard time rejecting too many. It won't stop them at first, but there will be torch and pitchfork mobs. As a fan it saddens me, because I want to see the players at Michigan and do well for Michigan. But it is more fair for them to be able to change teams and transfer schools like any other student.

Ole Miss contested Shea's waiver. Georgia did not contest Fields'. Michigan took almost 2 months to file the required paperwork. Ohio State filed the day Fields transferred. Ole Miss was the main reason Shea had to wait so long though. If Georgia would have fought like Ole Miss, this would have dragged out in the same fashion.

Patterson's case took longer because Ole' Miss filed a complaint and tried to block the transfer. They fought it all the way with the NCAA. Stop being a baby.

Think about it like this - in todays world where everyone gets offended by everything. Would the NCAA announce in February, which is African American History month, that it was going to force an African American player to stay where he was verbally assaulted by a white athlete of the same university? There is no way in the world they wanted to touch this issue.
If they would have said no - the media would have had a field day, no pun intended. Not only are the players not paid but now the NCAA is telling an African American player that he has to stay and take the abuse if he wants to play this year. There would be protests. There would be marches. There would be players leaving college and going to one of the new pro leagues.
The NCAA had no choice!
