[LOCKED] Per Cornelius Johnson - Plans to "expand" offense
For all of those who thought Shea was "speaking out of turn", sounds like plans are in works to get ball more to playmakers. https://twitter.com/SamWebb77/status/1081927242236727296 [edit:mgowill] This thread is now locked because it has jumped the rails.

I'm in the same boat. Calling bullshit on this, because we've heard the EXACT SAME FUCKING THING each of the last 3 years:
"oh, we're going to incorporate more spread elements"
"oh, we're going to incorporate more speed on offense "
"oh, we're going to open things up"
Bullshit. I expect exactly 3 plays per game that try to get the ball to playmakers in space, then back to "body blows."

I laughed; but then I thought "empty backfield, 5 TEs, running QB -- sounds kind of fun to watch!"
My question: should I be worried about what this says about my mental health?

What's worse, a 5 TE set or a putting a TE in the backfield during a bowl game and actually attempting to hand the ball off to that TE?

I feel like holding my head and screaming remembering that play. How could a team be so unprepared at the end of the season that that kind of thing can happen?
I never saw anything even remotely like that happen when Jedd Fisch was here.
And in saying that, I'm not saying bring Jedd Fisch back and all problems will be solved.
Man, I hope there's a big move in the coaching staff soon. We saw it last year. So it's possible it will happen this year.

And after UCLA’s 6-7 2017 season with Fisch as OC, despite having a star QB (Josh Rosen) and plenty of offensive talent, whose head would you have been screaming for if you were a Bruins fan?
Exactly six Power 5 teams had better records than Michigan in the 2018 regular season. Six. Michigan lost one conference game - it was a big one, but the offense did put up 39 points against OSU, and that number was pretty consistent with its 37 point-per-game average.
Fisch’s Bruins team averaged 31 points per game in the regular season, and only scored 17 in their bowl.
While Fisch’s 2016 team averaged more, the schedule was significantly weaker, so it’s hard to compare OCs.
We needn’t be an echo chamber of negativity. We have a good coaching staff.

An offense consisting of only tight ends and fullbacks in bunch formation, with one offensive tackle split left. Motion the tackle presnap and direct snap it to him running right behind a convoy of fullbacks and tight ends.

Yes, that then motion from a goalline formation to a spread formation. The play call will be a roll-out right. Just like what exactly was called against Ohio State on the 2-point conversion attempt.

Keep in mind that Shea was learning a new offense last year. It's one of the disadvantages of bringing in a transfer quarterback, regardless of the flaws in the play calling.
I do expect the offense to be better next year just because of Shea's growth and comfort with Harbaugh (although obviously the play calling could still hold them back).

So any good (non-1st year) QB can light up OTP Brown? That's comforting.
On the flip side, Shea will now be lighting up top ten Ds since he'll be in his second year? Looking forward to seeing that.
Or more excuses after next year.

Haskins isn’t a good QB. He’s going to be the first QB off the board and probable top 5 pick in the draft. He can carve up nearly any defense he faces regardless of defensive coordinator

I feel comfortable saying that Haskins was coached to run the offense in his first two years in the program.
Haskins going into this season had a little more experience than Dylan McCaffrey does going into the 2019 season. They both redshirted their first year and based on his stats Haskins appears to have played a bit more in his second year than Dylan did this year. If Shea had gone pro, I'd feel pretty comfortable with Dylan as the starter.

I agree. It’s the same damn excuse every year. New QB, new system, new o-line, new freshman, playbook is complicated, blah fucking blah.
Kyker Murray transferred, played one year, and won the Heisman. Lincoln Riley didn’t make excuses and instead let his playmakers actually make plays. Every damn team has to replace players but it only seems to impact UM.
We’ll see a few wrinkles against MTSU and Army then back to the same boring predictable shit the rest of the season.
Run, run, pass, punt.
