Per 97.1 The Fan Columbus Ohio Former Georgia Backup QB Justin Fields will Transfer To Ohio State

They believe that Fields will petition for immediate eligibility and expect it will be granted by NCAA. This also should mean that Haskins will be declaring for the NFL draft.

I was thrilled that Patterson got to play right away, I think the Ole Miss staff lied to him, but I also knew he probably should have had to sit a year.  Glad it worked out for us.  But the door has been opened, Fields 100% guaranteed will be eligible this Fall.  Regardless of the merits, the NCAA is going to let Patterson play for Michigan and not let Ohio State play a guy right away too, that would give the appearance of uneven treatment.

False equivalency is your bff, then. Patterson’s coach was jettisoned for being a slimeball and the NCAA allowed some of his teammates to be immediately eligible to play as transfers, but didn’t give others. Patterson and others decided to test that ruling—and won because their coach was fired scum.

A talented head case!  Committed to PSU, would've walked in, sat for a year and become the starter.  No, I'll go to GA which had Eason and Fromm.  What, I'm not the immediate starter???

I don't think he becomes eligible. The Ole Miss kids situation was a slam dunk and the NCAA still made them sweat it out and jump through multiple hoops. If they allow the "racial slur" door to open, then immediately 100 guys next year are going to claim the same hardship. The ensuing chaos would literally threaten the existence of the NCAA. The NCAA is easily corrupted but the one thing they will absolutely protect is the pot of gold they guard with their lives.

It's not the quality of the players, it is how they are used. That is in fact, the issue we face here at Michigan now. A few years ago, we didn't have the quality but Fisch had a nice system.

I have full confidence in Shea or Dylan running the offense, and another year of coaching Milton may have higher upside than all of them. Just need to USE them properly in a high-powered offense.

Jedd Fisch was never the OC. He didn't have a different system. It is, and always has been, Harbaugh's system.

It honestly can’t get any worse when it comes to osu, so why worry or stress over it?  We will be lucky to beat them once every ten years. The sooner you accept this, the happier you will be.

Maybe someone at Ohio State will call him a name and he'll transfer again....

Martell has stated that the starting job is his no matter if fields comes or not and Fields had better know he needs to win the job.

Ohio State gets great players because they know about the coaching staff preparing them for the NFL, and the chance of winning championships. Lineman are crying to be taught by Johnson, The WR's know and trust Hartline to get them ready and the DB's just come in droves. They have great coaches in Wilson, Day, Schiano and now Yurcich(?).

And Fields knows he has a great QB coach or two there.

I did not see the /s.  I’m trying to get my head around that you honestly think that schiano and Wilson are great coaches. Those guys are dirt balls - and not great coaches, to boot.

And what lineman cries to pay for anybody?  I assume you are an osu troll, because that would explain the idiocy. (And the inferiority complex)

The wide receivers know and trust Hartline?  Based on fucking what?  His first year of actual coaching?

Zak Smith was the moron that coached before and most of the wrs were awful and a few panned out in the NFL.

They don't get great players because the staff prepares them for the NFL.  None of their qbs ever play in the NFL and I bet Haskins flakes out as well.

Don't really care.  At this point, they could start Nick Sheridan and I'd still expect them to beat us.  This rivalry is more one-sided than the Michigan-Rutgers "rivalry".  Beat them just once and I'll start to care about this game again.

Knowing OSU and their history of players like him, the former is more likely than the latter (depending on what you determine to be a bust).

That's why it's a big deal. That being said, all the better if he is granted eligibility and we beat them in A2 next year

And....so, what? What are we supposed to do about it? I mean, this is ridiculous. It's like getting upset because the Yankees or Red Sox were to sign the latest free agent.

Play better, compete or you get beat. You don't get beat by transfer papers or on signing day. You get beat when you don't execute or compete on game day. Win the game.

We don't control what others do outside the white lines.

I'm not upset at all. I'm just saying that more than likely he will be the starter next year and do well. A lot of people on here are suggesting he isn't good.

I think it's fine because we have a chance to beat OSU at home reloaded. I welcome the idea of OSU being good, because the only win we have against OSU in the past 15 years is followed by a massive caveat.

So, since some of you probably know more about the eligibility question than I (bc of Patterson), what are the odds Fields has to sit a year?  A now-former UGA baseball player used the n-word in reference to Fields, and that's supposedly his basis for fighting to be immediately eligible.

That, of course, is not really why he's transferring; he wants a shot to start immediately. Anyone want to gauge his likelihood of success?

Some of these comments are great examples of why I can't take internet forums very seriously.

  • Fields is the second highly ranked QB to transfer from Georgia in a year or so - that is a bigger hit to Georgia than it is a gain by OSU
  • From what I saw, he did not have good field awareness and was slow at making decisions. A freshman, but not a guy that looked at all scary.
  • This "free agency" for college players is what we want, right? The equality of the coach and their freedom to leave and the player's ability to transfer? Kind of like how Michigan got Jake and Shea?
  • Every thread does not have to include snowflakes about how they think the offense is dated or lacking talent. It doesn't matter, only wins and losses matter. Let's hope they take the next step on that.

My issue with your first bullet:

Who cares about how it affects Georgia? We never play them. And if we did get a chance to play them, it would be in the CFP. And the only way we get there is by beating OSU, and Fields going to OSU makes it harder for us to get there (most likely).

Also, I would totally disagree with that first point. Georgia has Fromm, OSU has Martell. Fromm has two more years too. This is a bigger gain for OSU than a hit for Georgia

It matters because Georgia still wins a lot of ball games. If every school that had a QB transfer were doomed, this wouldn't be the case. They also run an offense closer to Michigan's and still win games. So if Michigan is losing because of transfers and an old offense, then I can only point to Georgia as an example of similar circumstances with far better results.

Now lets get 247's scouting report:

1. Fields’ Generational On-Field Skills

Before you can speak on Fields’ impact on the college football landscape, you must first understand why he’s viewed in such high regard. The No. 2 overall prospect in the 2018 class, Fields received the highest quarterback grade in 247Sports history (101) last cycle along with Trevor Lawrence.

Fields embodies where the modern college and NFL game is heading.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Georgia native is both mobile and accurate, a running back-like figure (with the speed to match) coupled with an arm that can make every possible throw. This isn’t hyperbole. Fields is a former baseball standout with an arm capable of making throws on and off-platform. More so, he’s an advanced passer for his age. Fields displays touch with the football and makes throws with anticipation. Add in his ability to easily stretch the pocket and make plays with his feet, and Fields is the ultimate game-planning headache.

We saw limited windows of that skill this season. Fields completed 69 percent of his passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns. More often than not the Bulldogs used Fields as a change-of-pace rushing QB, a role in which he averaged 6.3 yards per carry despite opposing defenses almost always knowing what would happen.

Fields arrives at Ohio State to tutor under Ryan Day, considered one of the best quarterback developers in the country.

Best case scenario is Fields doesn’t get cleared to play this year.

Worst case scenario is he picks up right where Haskins left off and the OSU offense is top 3 in the nation.

Fields is an elite talent, anyone who thinks OSU got worse out of him transferring in has some serious issues in grasping reality.

Serious question—Why would he be immediately eligible?  Shea was a totally different situation, but what has happened at Georgia that would permit him to leave and not have to sit a year? What am I missing?
