2019 Recruiting Outlook: Post Daxton Hill Decommitment Edition
Current Commits: 23
Expected Commits: 28-30, so 5-7 spots left
- QB (1) : Cade McNamara
- Projection: Done for the class
- Projection: Done for the class
- RB (1): Zach Charbonnet
- DJ Williams; unlikely to come to Michigan
- Projection: Done for the class
- WR (4): Giles Jackson, George Johnson III, Quintel Kent, Mike Sainristil
- Cornelius Johnson; Recent report from Steve Wiltfong suggests that Michigan is a real player, but Stanford is most likely the leader
- Kyle Ford; USC has been leader and Kliff Kingsbury addition probably helps them out; longshot to Michigan
- Jaylen Ellis; Michigan is in contention
- Projection: Cornelius Johnson is the most likely bet
- TE (1): Erick All
- Sam Snyder; Coach Moore recently visited him in home and he has set a visit for Michigan. He's a kid that's been blowing up with offers but Michigan hasn't offered yet, most likely due to seeing how many spots there are in the class
- Projection: Sam Snyder if offered
- OT (2): Trente Jones, Karsen Barnhart
- Trevor Keegan; Recent run of crystal balls suggest that Keegan is coming to Michigan
- Danielson Ike; Ed Warriner has made it a point to keep in touch with him and get him back on campus; He will make a return visit to Michigan soon
- Dawand Jones; New kid that has been blowing up with offers. Michigan has crystal balls but not sure how hard Michigan is pushing for him
- Projection: Trevor Keegan and Ike or Jones (most likely Ike)
- OG (3): Nolan Rumler, Zach Carpenter, Jack Stewart
- Chris Akporoghene; visited Michigan this past weekend. Listed as a tackle but doesn't have the prototypical size
- Projection: Done for the class
From the push made to recruit multiple OL, it seems that the staff wants at least two more OL
- DE (3): Gabe Newburg, Mike Morris, David Ojabo
- Zach Harrison; You all know about him. Michigan leading in crystal balls but who really knows
- Projection: Zach Harrison
- DT (2): Mazi Smith, Chris Hinton
- D'Von Ellies; New offer after Karlaftis reaffirmed to Purdue. Seems to be favoring PSU but visit to Michigan in the works
- Jared Harrison-Hunte; Same story as Ellies with visit plans in the works; Miami(YTM) may be in mix
- *My expectation is Mike Morris will move inside similar to Carlo Kemp
- Projection: Done for the class
- LB (2): Charles Thomas, Amauri Pesek-Hickson
- Quavaris Crouch; Clemson has all the crystal balls. Michigan is always in contention but who knows
- Projection: Done for the class
- Viper (1): Joey Velazquez
- *Quinten Johnson said he may play at the position as well but with Hill de-committing, it's unlikely
- Projection: Done for the class
- CB (2): DJ Turner, Jalen Perry
- *Perry may be a better fit for safety
- Projection: Done for the class
- S (1): Quinten Johnson
- Josh Sanguinetti; Had interest in Michigan for a while but it may have faded when Hill committed
- Jamal Hill; Michigan is listed as warm on 247. Tall, fast safety that may be a under radar option
- Projection: Jamal Hill

Light this on fire and raise a Swim Lanes in its place.

Dax Dax Dax. Why u do this to us...
December 9th, 2018 at 2:00 PM ^
Sorry to thread jack but I saw a rumor on social media that Higdon and Bush are planning to sit out the Peach Bowl. I didn't want to start a thread for a rumor. Can anyone confirm this?
EDIT: Dotman on 247 is reporting this now. He's supposed to be one of the most respected users on that site (aside from staff)
December 9th, 2018 at 2:02 PM ^
That's fine if true. I really want to see turner get a lot of carries and I want to see what mcgrone can do at lb.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:38 PM ^
Nowadays anymore I don't know that it's neccessarily a bad thing for certain players to sit the bowl game. For players like Peppers/Gary, they've contributed during their time here, are slotted to be top picks, and now have obviously seen disastrous drawbacks to playing (no real value add to draft stock, potential for tragedy e.g. Butt).
Not playing also lets the team get more reps to the next wave and looks at who is emerging as we enter winter conditioning! Always have to look for the silver lining.
December 9th, 2018 at 3:16 PM ^
Another example of money and the National championship playoff ruining what was special about college football. Bowl game used to be an opportunity to prove your self on a big stage. Now it is a meaningless exhibition game/early spring game because it isn’t the CFP.
December 9th, 2018 at 3:45 PM ^
Not sure if it's the CFP, or just the fact that there are so many freaking bowl games and they're all named after sponsors. There used to be prestige in playing in a bowl game. Now, it's "hey guys, let's go provide advertising for Chic-Fil-A but not get paid for it! Oh and there's a chance you could get injured and lose millions of dollars in the process!"
December 9th, 2018 at 2:04 PM ^
Bush stated he’d be playing, but I’m sure he changed his mind because Michigan football is cursed and can’t ever have nice things.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:05 PM ^
Bush already said he wasn’t sitting out and Higdon is going to play in the Senior Bowl, why wouldn’t he play in the Peach Bowl? Not logical.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:46 PM ^
Scouts will be at Senior Bowl practices all week. They won’t be at Michigan’s practices for the Peach Bowl.
December 9th, 2018 at 4:31 PM ^
Cameras and a recording of the game will be at the Peach Bowl.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:25 PM ^
I have two feelings of thought on this. First is that I don't blame them and second is that it doesn't bother me at all. They sound as excited about this bowl game as I do. The prize was lost a couple weeks ago and this consolation game means nothing to me, win or lose.
December 9th, 2018 at 5:59 PM ^
I'm pretty much on the same page.
December 9th, 2018 at 5:25 PM ^
Despite stepping on their dicks for nearly a decade (hey, just like us!), Florida always recruits well.
They have to have some players that are headed to the NFL that are going to do the same thing . . . sit out the illustrious Peach bowl.
I wonder who?
December 9th, 2018 at 2:01 PM ^
Thanks for starting this. When will the Atlanta weather forecast for 12/29 be discussed for the indoor bowl game? Has about the same level of purpose as this.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:06 PM ^
This place has went into complete meltdown over an 18 year old choosing a better program. I get that he was a 5 Star stud but look at the last two we got. Peppers and Gary were good players but neither lived up to the “all-world” potential. Then guys like Hurst, Lewis, Wino, and Bush were rated far lower and all were better players. The chaos around here is unreal.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:11 PM ^
That's right! As I said this groaning has about as much purpose as discussing Detroit weather for a Lions home game.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:16 PM ^
It's a weird little lull in between the regular and bowl seasons where everyone you just ignored because they were buried deep in threads come out to start complaining about everything. Read the threads after the basketball games and you'll see the same thing.
It's fine. People get really attached to what high schoolers do, then get mad or happy based on their whims. It's life.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:41 PM ^
This is a good point. I think we’d all live our best lives if we distanced ourselves from recruiting a bit.
At the same time F Bama. Why can’t anyone else have nice things.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:43 PM ^
Double post*
December 9th, 2018 at 2:40 PM ^
I think most of the frustration is because this one came out of left field. Couple that with the osu loss and this is what you get.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:50 PM ^
Has gone. This is Michigan fergodsakes.
December 9th, 2018 at 3:13 PM ^
Very true! Harbaugh's 2 top 6 recruiting classes have not won us a B1G championship, so if we are #5 or #15 it probably will not make that much of a difference.
December 9th, 2018 at 3:57 PM ^
This ! Everybody is putting a ton of emphasis on getting Zach Harrison and he would be a great get but more importantly is having roster depth. Both Peppers and Gary were rated as high or even higher than anybody OSU brought in the last few years but their depth is off the charts due to recruiting a ton of top 100 to 150 type HS players. This might not go over big here, but I'd trade a Z. Harrison for a couple of top 100 or so commits in a heart beat especially considering Harrison's top 5 rating is based on "potential" since he's far from an accomplished HS football player at this time. He is, however, an athletic freak and watch out if he is developed.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:12 PM ^
Is it really over with Dax? Has he signed with Alabama? We are talking about high school kids here. People play the field but they typically end up with their "first love". Dax may realize that the hot temptress has a strange looking sore on her nether regions. Here's to flippety flops.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:19 PM ^
Yes, it’s over.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:21 PM ^
He’s not flipping back. Based on how it went down, the staff may not want him back.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:28 PM ^
Do you know something we dont in terms of "how it went down"? Sincerely asking.
I find it hard to believe that no matter what happened, the coaches will not gladly take him back should he flip back. They will with open arms.
Can any of the insiders on here explain how long this was in the makings for? Umbig??
December 9th, 2018 at 7:17 PM ^
I don’t have any personal knowledge, just what Lorenz said about it. Since I don’t want to give it away, I’ll just say that the Hill family didn’t handle it the way you would hope as far as informing the UM staff.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:56 PM ^
May be now that Harbaugh has put out the rumors that he is leaving for the NFL that Dax may come back? A long shot but worth a try by the staff to flip him back.
December 9th, 2018 at 3:08 PM ^
I would be astonished if Harbaugh and staff gave up on Dax. I'll bet they will continue to recruit him up until signing day.
December 9th, 2018 at 3:05 PM ^
Alabama got to him, its over. How they got to him can be easily surmised.
December 9th, 2018 at 4:24 PM ^
The first step to change is to admit your denial.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:13 PM ^
I'm prepared for Z. Harrison to pass on UM too.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:37 PM ^
I'm prepared to lose Charbonnet and Hinton now too.
Thanks, BPONE!
December 9th, 2018 at 2:38 PM ^
The coaches need to make sure that doesnt happen. They better be preaching to these guys's ears everyday. We lose Charbonnet and well....
December 9th, 2018 at 2:37 PM ^
He's not coming here. Honestly, his family is all buckeye and i just dont see him leaving ohio for us at this moment. I actually think urban retiring hurt us with him in that regard.
December 9th, 2018 at 3:50 PM ^
Agreed, it seems he may love Michigan and the decision was easier when he could point out Meyer is a POS to his family. Now that he is 'gone', and the result of the Game, we done.....
December 9th, 2018 at 4:42 PM ^
Ohio's bankrupt culture existed before urban got there and will be there after.
December 9th, 2018 at 4:52 PM ^
That would be a kick in the groin as just a few weeks ago most had him a done deal to us. Been reading the OSU boards and they all but gave up on Harrison. I could be wrong - that's he's not your everyday born and bred Buckeye fan as he moved to the Columbus area from somewhere else just before HS. I believe I read Chicago - correct ? Even if we lose out on both Hill and Harrison - just keep building depth.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:26 PM ^
I would take a tall, fast, underrated safety with a last name of Hill.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:36 PM ^
When I see "may be a better fit for safety" I think "too slow to keep up with OSU's receivers." Sorry.
December 9th, 2018 at 3:40 PM ^
Well generally thats why they're playing safety and not corner. Maybe they shouldn't ask their safeties to do that so often.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:49 PM ^
Looks better than 2017. Not what it could have been if we would have taken down a so/so OSU team. I think there is a chance we could finish #9-#8 class in the country but odds are we will be around #13.
December 9th, 2018 at 2:57 PM ^
Nice write up, even without swim lanes.
December 9th, 2018 at 3:33 PM ^
How did the recruiting class get to the 28-30 size? I see that (a) the total number of scholarship players on the current roster is 77, (b) eleven fifth-year players will leave, (c) Rashan Gary and probably Devin Bush, Jr. will be going to the NFL, and (d) there could be a couple of fourth-year lineman who won't be offered a fifth year.
That would bring the total number of scholarship players for next year who currently are on the roster down to 62. Michigan currently has 23 commitments for the 2019 recruiting class and that would bring the total scholarship players to the limit of 85.
In order to get the 2019 recruiting class size to 28-30, is it expected that there will be a combination of at least five to seven more early departures for the NFL and transfers?
Also, could Michigan's lowest-rated, current football recruit, Columbus, Ohio's Joey Velazquez (who'd once committed to Ohio State for baseball), decide that he'd like to concentrate on baseball as a freshman at Michigan (assuming that he would pass up signing with a pro team if he's drafted in the next Major League Baseball draft), so that he wouldn't be treated as a football recruit for 2019? Or does he need the full football scholarship in order to cover the out-of-state-resident costs at Michigan next year? Is his situation similar to what happened to one-time Michigan kicker Andrew David who'd been an all-state baseball player in Ohio?
December 9th, 2018 at 5:20 PM ^
Theoretically: If Velazquez goes over to baseball, he would still count against football unless 1) he gets a baseball scholarship AND 2) is not on the football team. If he has a baseball scholarship, plays baseball, and is a walk-on in football, it counts against football.
December 9th, 2018 at 3:48 PM ^
Round out the class with really good 3 stars!!! woo Hoo, well catch up to OSU in no time.
December 9th, 2018 at 4:29 PM ^
When is Michigan going to start offering double wides
