OT: what blogs you reading, what shows you watching, what games you playing?

Submitted by tasnyder01 on December 6th, 2018 at 3:05 PM

With a lull in football and basketball -- not to mention work -- its time to ask: please give me ideas for how to pass the boredom. Er, I mean, what are you reading, playing, etc.

Any good blogs? TTB is always good. The athletic. Anyone got good politics blog? (Besides infowars).

Games? I think I wanna play Oregon trail online at work one day, just because that seems silly and stupid, but fun. Any other old games you'd suggest?

Also, if anyone knows a good actuarial blog, I've been needing one for a while. (Random, I know.)

If you're looking for some current gen Goldeneye, there's a version on Steam that's fantastic. A lot of the classic levels and then some user created ones that are great. Higher graphics and more than 4 players at a time. I think up to 32, haven't played in a while

If you haven't used Steam before, you can get it on your PC and then you'll need to add games. Goldeneye on Steam is free by the way. It needs to be sideloaded though. When I downloaded it a year or two ago, it wasn't in the Steam store.

Yes, definitely! It's so much fun. I was a big fan of 3 and enjoyed 4. This one is capturing my attention like 3. You can subscribe to Origin for like $12.99/mo and have access to all their games including Premium BF:V. I did it this way because I have a tendency to play one game non-stop for x-amount of time and then switch. There's a great discord community around it where you can squad up and play the way the games meant to be played!

Red Dead Redemption 2 when I have the time. Now what Nintendo needs to do is make a remastered version of 007 GoldenEye.

I just finished Parks and Rec on Netflix so I am currently looking for a new series to binge.

Right, kind of my take on why Skyward Sword was so poorly received. Great story, great ideas, AWFUL execution because it shoehorns in the Wii motion controls so heavily. I'd love to see a Switch remaster where they allow a more Zelda-style gameplay, or even a BoTW follow-up.

PUBG on PC with a couple of buddies (wife doesn't realize the thrill on 99 other people trying to kill you). Also the 'crack' that is WoW, probably going to get me sucked into it again when Vanilla is a thing again in the spring/summer.

Just finishing We Are Legion (We Are Bob) - very fun sci-fi book.  Also, for horror Richard Laymon's Once Upon a Halloween was really good, if a little bit too much with the toplessness.  Kings of the Wyld is really excellent if you like fantasy.  Also, (shameless plug) I wrote a supernatural thriller called The Living Darkness that you can get on Amazon or the other major ebook places.

Playing: Mario Kart 8 with my daughter on her Switch.  Blast from the past.  My college roommate and I spent a lot of time playing the old one on Nintendo 64.

Blogs?  Pretty much just this one.

Shows? Re-watching The League and finishing Westworld.

Games? Trying to finish Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age and the Spyro Reignited trilogy before Christmas comes and I jump into Red Dead 2, Pokémon, and Dark Souls Remastered.

Fallout 76.

I enjoy the game a lot, despite all the glitches and issues.  I have always liked the post apocalyptic setting of the Fallout series.  Fallout 76 lacks the NPCs and most of the story elements of previous games, but retains the feel and mechanics of Fallout 4 in an online multiple player survival game.  My current preferred way to kill time.

All I am doing at this point in my life is awaiting at least a fucking TRAILER for GoT season 8. I need the conclusion of this mighty show already. I'm sick to death of waiting.

I'm horrified to say I've lately been playing the Grisaia series of visual novels.

I'm shocked and dismayed to further admit that I've really enjoyed them.

Started watching Ozark. Got that "ah fuck, going to have to watch this entire thing now" feeling.

As for games, I started playing Dwarf Fortress. It's interface is obtuse, like UFRs, but once you figure it out, you can do nearly whatever the hell you want. For an easier time on your brain and your eyes, try Rim World.

For board game, if you like quick roll and dice I would recommend highly:
Tag city
and
Lindisfarne both from a very cool (and amazing) editor: Runes Editions.

The english version of Lindisfarne are beautiful written, I heard a drunken cat did it...

Well, after about 8 months of constantly yelling at my son regarding this game, I’ve found myself sneaking into the basement to play Fortnite when he’s not home. If anyone enjoys a good detective series, I just finished watching Bosch on Amazon. It was a really strong 4 seasons.

F is for family is a good Netflix show. It’s always sunny if you’re a Hulu guy.

I don’t read specific blogs or sites, just whatever pops up on my BR team stream.

I can’t think of good old games to play at work, but if you have free time elsewhere, I’ve been really into dishonored lately. I guess scrap mechanic is fun on PC. It is also time consuming if you’re looking to pass time at work.

Edit: I remembered that you can download EA origin and buy at least Arkham Origins on there. I don’t remember if they had any other Arkham games on there but that would pass the time. It may need a controller though. Mass effect trilogy is on origin and isn’t controller compatible at all unless you go into the script of the game and enter in a specific setting that you copy and paste online. I never had the patience to do that but if you prefer PC controls, those games take up time

Believe it or not I just started The Office for the first time a couple weeks ago. I think I am towards the end of season 6 now and I finally get why it was so popular! Games its RDR2 and FH4 for me.

Playing more 5e D&D than ever. Gloomhaven is fun, but dang does it have a crap ton of tokens, cards, etc.

Just finished Ozark that was good. The Netflix documentary series Age of Tanks is really good!

For really good journalism and political analysis covering progressive topics and interests, I really like Talking Point Memo. It's rarely, if ever, pedantic or filled with dogma. I have politically conservative friends that appreciate its quality analysis.

Reading: 'The 24th Name', by James Braddock. An ex-spy who is a real good spycraft writer

Blogs: I just surf. I like checking out YouTube videos, satire mostly: Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers are my favorites. Other favs are science, history, whatever I find interesting...

Games: Skyrim VR, Elite Dangerous, occassionally dabble with Lotro

Seriously into our basketball, haven't missed any of the games. We're kinda good.

Blogs, literally I read soccer ones and this one and subscribe to The Athletic.

Games -- gotta be Red Dead 2. I could recommend others but this will keep you busy for a LONG time.
