Khalid Hill vs Dave Portnoy (Barstool) on Twitter

Submitted by MacMarauder on November 29th, 2018 at 8:04 PM

Tonight there was some back and forth between Khalid Hill and Dave Portnoy (Barstool president) on Twitter.  Portnoy said on a podcast that Michigan players should apologize to him for their poor showing again OSU.  Khalid took exception to that.  Now on one hand this is just some petty twitter beef but what I find interesting is that Dave Portnoy is a Michigan grad.  I never hear about this guy around these parts, probably because the overlap between Barstool and Mgoblog is slim to none.  I assume everyone would have the Hammering Panda's back in this argument, but does Dave Portnoy have any rep among Michigan fans?

The only reason I know about Barstool Sports is from MGoBlog crying about it. I’m sure it sucks because most sports entertainment companies do.

The only apology due is from the coaches to the players. Coaches did a shit job and set those players up to get burnt on TV.

Apologies are dumb. Just work hard to fix the problem so it never happens again.  The team improved significantly from last year and they'll keep working hard to get better.

Barstool is trash-- it isn't remotely edgy or funny. It's a juvenile place where man-children can go revel in a mix of misogyny and bro culture that can only come from privilege and a lack of self-awareness.

Portnoy seems to have knowingly cornered the market on this demographic with his shtick while playing dumb when anyone attempts to discuss the toxicity of the barstool fanbase. He's a gross opportunist that should be called out by the Michigan fanbase for the shit he peddles.

The Coaches/Harbaugh did not put their players in position to succeed because of stubbornness/tactical ineptitude. The players have nothing to do with it.

However, ultimately its just a game. Its not like it was any of us out there defending those crossing routes.

Don't think I've ever been to "Barstool Sports", but at the end of the day it's just sports stuff, so what do I care if an enterprising dude makes some money with that. Most sports coverage is pretty bad, and let's not kid ourselves here, a lot of the stuff on this website isn't exactly gold either. Like wtf is Punt/Counterpunt...does anyone even vet that stuff before it goes on the site?

I promise I am getting no money for this, and this is the first and last time I will ever mention anyone/anything associated with Barstool on Mgoblog.  I just recently found out Dave Portnoy was a Michigan alum and saw him get into it with Hammering Panda on twitter so I made a post on it.  I figure if we can talk about Harbaugh vs Jim Rome twitter drama we can do Panda vs Portnoy, especially since both sides are Michigan grads.

Portnoy was clearly joking here.  It's kind of embarrassing that Khalid Hill took it seriously.

That said, we do deserve an apology from Zach Gentry for his terrible hands, and Don Brown for his terrible gameplan.

I love the whole "he's not an asshole, it's just his schtick to get a rise out of people and it's funny".  No, he's an asshole who can't face the ensuing consequences so he covers by calling it a joke.

As the rule of goats says:  Even if you're only fucking goats ironically, you're still a goat fucker.

I don't like what Dave said and I think Khalid has every right to say what he said. That being said...I don't if I've ever seen anywhere else where the players are so reactive to what people say on Twitter. This may not be unique to Michigan, I'm not sure. May just be this generation of player.

My opinion is to side with the person who was an actual D1 football player at Michigan who busted his ass for the Winged Helmet over the condescending media-type bro who probably didn’t even play football in high school.

Marcus might have said some idiotic things - but he called out our D scheme spot on before the blowout last Sat.

The dude flat out balled on the field too & helped win the national championship. He is also great friends with Charles.

I don't follow his every word by any means, but listened when he was on Sam's show. The guy knows his defense. He said we needed to learn some zone techniques & man wouldn't cut it against teams like osu. He got bashed off the board because at the time M's D was dominating - but looking back it was against inferior teams.

The guy was damn good wearing the winged helmet also. He helped seal the deal in the win against Osu - to lead to the NC.

All a person has to do is watch his YouTube clip to see - if was before their time...or watch the Btn show on the 97 team

I don’t care what anyone thinks of Barstool. Hate them, love them, don’t know anything about them...doesn’t matter.

The Portnoy guy OP mentions may be a misogynist, racist, sexist, whatever...but he is obviously doing something right because we are talking about him on a Michigan sports blog. So he has succeeded with his brand whether you like him or not.

I looked at the interaction OP mentioned and the Hammering Panda is definitely correct—but all the Portnoy guy wanted was a reaction and publicity. So whatever. Go Blue.

The whole "got your attention so he's doing something right" is such ridiculous b.s.

If your only motivation is to get attention, you've already lost and the only question is how many people you drag down into the muck with you. You could drown a kitten on camera and you'd get attention, doesn't mean you're "winning."

Whenever guys like Portnoy put their brand of sexist "humor" out into the world and it gets laughs and attention, it conditions his audience to think it's fine, acceptable behavior, and it plants the seeds of much worse behavior and objectification.

But yeah, I guess he got some attention.

No one is policing anyone's thoughts. It's saying/posting it that makes someone an asshole. Not every dickish thing that comes into your mind needs to be shared. If you think someone is too fat, just keep it to yourself; the rest of the world truly doesn't need that information and is better off without it.
