Rose Bowl scenarios

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on November 25th, 2018 at 3:11 PM

Let's say for the sake of an argument the CFP rankings are what the AP Poll is currently.

  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Georgia
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Ohio State
  7. UCF
  8. Michigan

Rose Bowl if-

  • Alabama beats Georgia
  • Northwestern gets killed
  • Texas beats Oklahoma or Oklahoma narrowly beats Texas while Northwestern gets mauled and style points'd

The only other NY6 Bowl options are the Fiesta Bowl and the Peach Bowl.

We'll either be going to the granddaddy of them all, the Fiesta Bowl which we haven't been since Harbaugh was the QB or the Peach Bowl for the first time ever.

Possible opponents: Washington/Utah winner, Florida, UCF, Washington State?

I’d actually be interested to play any of those opponents except Florida. And while the Rose Bowl would be great, the Peach and Fiesta would also be fun.

Regarding opponents is there any chance we draw Georgia or LSU as well? What about Oklahoma? Hopefully not, but I can’t remember the rules on the number of teams from one conference in the NY6.

Worst case scenario in my opinion would be Georgia or Florida in the Peach. Tired of playing SEC teams in the south.

One of ESPN's bowl projections today had Michigan vs. LSU in the Fiesta.  The other pairing was Michigan vs. Wazzu in the Fiesta.

Its likely going to be the Fiesta.  Will probably be Ohio State vs. Washington in the Rose unless Oklahoma falters.  Committee was pretty down on them, and I don't think the win over Michigan is going to boost them over Oklahoma. Or Georgia for that matter.

Oklahoma would be an intriguing opponent only to see if Don Brown learned anything from the OSU beat down. Wonder if he would talk avenging his poor performance. Then again maybe not bc OU’s offense is better than OSU’s!

Our D problems need an infusion of faster talent and scheme changes. Not enough time to be ready for an angry Oklahoma team that would feel they deserved the shot over OSU.

I'd rather see OSU drop to Rose and underperform vs. Washington, which isn't going to give up 62.

I think it plays out as this:

  • Bama, Clemson and ND are in and undefeated
  • Oklahoma beats Texas and gets the 4th spot
  • OSU beats NWU and goes to the Rose Bowl

Michigan gets a good bowl and opponent.  Not what we wanted but it is what it is.

I think Oklahoma beating Texas will earn them the 4th spot. I also think NW will not be the fodder people think. I'm expecting OSU to win but have a letdown of sorts and not impress the committee. The 49-20 loss at 6-6 Purdue in late October is hard to pass over. Plus 52-51 vs. 5-7 Maryland, etc.

OSU to Rose

UM to Peach and play Georgia

Hopefully MSU gets to play TAMU in Outback and get blasted. It won't take 7 OTs either

Yes, that's right. Sugar is like the Rose Bowl for B10 if chosen for title, runner-up gets in.

Maybe a blowout of UCF would make things better and open the door for 19. Too bad their QB is hurt, would have liked to see us try to play them. Scary offense but not Oklahoma or OSU.

Hope this thread survives LSA, WD. Mine on this exact topic got nuked last night, and the Snowflakes are still pinned.

Anyway, I would laugh my ass off if OSU and Oklahoma both jump Notre Dame while they sit at home. I think that definitely needs to happen.

We can't block good teams defensive lines, Washington and Utah will both do well against us.  Washington has similar but not as much speed as OSU, the saving grace is their offensive line is more like Penn State than the one game a year Buckeyes.

Utah also has speed, just not as much.  Utah is better matchup but 50-50, Washington we should be underdogs but stupidly will be tabbed favorites.

What if.....OSU, UCF, OU, UGA, each get blown out in the championship games ? Then we are playoff bound as the 4 seed ! Could it happen ?

Mods are deleting any board post questioning the coaching staff. Why is this? What the hell is the point of having a discussion board where people are censored for stating the opinion they have. Pretty stupid.

Sugar Bowl is in play.    If OU goes to the playoff then the Sugar has Georgia and no BIG 12 team to match them with (won’t take non-top-12 Texas (9-4) or 9-3 WVU).  They’d grab UM in a second.

A major bowl win would take a little bit of the sting out of yesterday, when we look at the season in retrospect - hope Michigan will be motivated and have a good game plan.

I would much rather have Michigan play Washington/Utah in the Rose Bowl and the team have the opportunity to get Michigan's first Rose Bowl victory since 1997 than either:

1) Florida for the third time in four years,

2) A qb-less UCF, which means Michigan would either get no credit for a victory or humiliated in a defeat, or

3) Mike Leach salivating to what he could do to Michigan's secondary.

One thing that might contribute to us getting the Rose Bowl: last year Oklahoma got the benefit of the doubt and got into the Playoff. Ohio was left out. This year maybe they throw Ohio a bone and put them just ahead of OU and into the Playoff, which would be against Alabama. Alabama vs Ohio State. Saban be Meyer. I don't like either by any stretch, but boy would I love to see Ohio’s tate get pummeled this year.

I’m rooting for Texas. If we make the Rose Bowl I may have to rob a bank first, but I’m fucking going. Watching UM in the Rose Bowl has been a dream for as long as I can remember. Now that I live out here and they may actually go, I’m pumped at the possibility.
