Rose Bowl scenarios
Let's say for the sake of an argument the CFP rankings are what the AP Poll is currently.
- Alabama
- Clemson
- Notre Dame
- Georgia
- Oklahoma
- Ohio State
- UCF
- Michigan
Rose Bowl if-
- Alabama beats Georgia
- Northwestern gets killed
- Texas beats Oklahoma or Oklahoma narrowly beats Texas while Northwestern gets mauled and style points'd
The only other NY6 Bowl options are the Fiesta Bowl and the Peach Bowl.
We'll either be going to the granddaddy of them all, the Fiesta Bowl which we haven't been since Harbaugh was the QB or the Peach Bowl for the first time ever.
Possible opponents: Washington/Utah winner, Florida, UCF, Washington State?

Go. It's better than you think.

Oklahoma Defense is horrible - think flag football intensity
OSU gets in ahead of OK
Rose Bowl game is amazing, need to go if you have a chance

The Rose Bowl scenarios are these:
If Northwestern wins Saturday, they're in the Rose Bowl.
If Ohio State wins Saturday and doesn't make the CFP, they're in the Rose Bowl.
If Ohio State wins Saturday and makes the CFP, Michigan is in the Rose Bowl.
It'll be Fiesta or Peach if 1 or 2 happen.

Unfortunately, There's Also A "Worst-Case" Scenario -- The Holiday Bowl
In what might be either the worst-case scenario OR the best-case scenario for a team AND a fan base that might be suffering from severe PTSD right now:
Northwestern upsets Ohio State and goes to the Rose Bowl as Big Ten champion. Ohio State goes to the Peach Bowl or Fiesta Bowl, eliminating Michigan from one of the New Year's Six bowl games. Michigan is ineligible to go to the Citrus Bowl or Outback Bowl because they’ve played in those bowl games too recently, so their best option becomes the Holiday Bowl in San Diego against the third-picked team from the Pac-12 that would be either the loser of the Pac-12 championship game or Washington State.

I would just love for these lazy ass couch jockey bloggers to say some of these thing to Rashan Gary or Chase Winovich’s face that they don’t “deserve to go to a bowl” or “nobody cares about a meaningless bowl”, after those players have worked their ass off for 3 to 5 years and these internet fat asses have done nothing but jerk off to pornhub and type on their keyboard for like a decade. I would love to see Rashan and Chase line them up and spear tackle them 2 feet deep into the block M at midfield! I’d pay good money for that!

Wish I could up upvote this. Would someone who has enough points and doesn't care please upvote for me?

Baumgardner is saying there’s an outside chance we fall to the Citrus bowl. What is the scenario that happens?

Lots of upsets next week. If Pitt, Northwestern, and Texas wins, or 2 of those 3, as conference champions, they would get automatic bids to the NY6 bowls. That bumps teams like Michigan, LSU, and Florida down.
Hard to imagine that happening, but that's the scenario.
November 25th, 2018 at 9:17 PM ^
Agree - hard to see it happening even if Northwestern, Pitt and Texas all win - unless Michigan falls behind Florida or Penn State in the CFP rankings this week (which seems unlikely to me). Michigan could move down to one of the last teams in the NY6 bowls if all three of the upsets happen, but I think would still be in the Fiesta or Peach Bowl.
November 26th, 2018 at 8:33 PM ^
Check that. Could happen, because Georgia would likely make the CFP even with a loss, and Florida or LSU would jump Michigan because of the Sugar Bowl auto berth. Still put the likelihood of all three upsets happening at less than 2-3%...

According to a report early this year, Michigan would be ineligible to play in either the Citrus Bowl or the Outback Bowl because they've played in each of those games too recently. LINK

Not ineligible. Just can't go more than twice in a certain period of time - so far have been in each once. Still don't see Michigan dropping out of an NY6 bowl.

I'm a big purple fan this week, Rose Bowl or not.

Me, too. Go U Northwestern!

We just got jail sexed by OSU...again. Ive moved on to basketball. At least Belein puts hardware in the trophy case at Michigan.
Harbaugh can look at the bottom of his cereal bowl while he is watching the Big Ten championship on TV.

Michigan vs Georgia in the Capital one bowl ! What happens if osu and ou lose ?
November 25th, 2018 at 11:15 PM ^
I want carnage.
Alabama to lose closely in the SEC Championship game.
Then Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Alabama all scratch each other's eyes out for the 4th slot until they blow the whole fucking thing up.
November 26th, 2018 at 8:01 AM ^
I would love to see the whole stupid thing blown up. This ND horse hockey where they get to hang back Championship week has to be addressed.
If ND will not join a conference and can cherry pick their way to the CFP, Thre needs to be a scoring mechanism that awards points for Conference Championships that is transparent. A conference title runner-up with a strong record should have as much consideration as an ND team that is on the beach championship week.
Next season sets up well... all the ranked threat teams are playing in AA. UM should be 7-0 when the Flailing Irish come to The Big House 10/26/19.

Michigan plays a (likely ranked) Penn State team in Happy Valley the week before Notre Dame.

I wouldn’t want to play UCF and that high flying offense, even if they lost their QB. That game would have nothing to gain for Michigan, and everything to lose.
If you win, congrats, you beat a G5 team that barely anyone respects as a true national power anyway. If you lose, you lost to a G5 team that was playing its backup QB. Winning streak or no winning streak, that would be yet another huge stain on this program if we lost to them.
November 26th, 2018 at 8:14 AM ^
Agree...they are a team that would be "mini osu" without the hype for this team to get up for. I'd much rather play an LSU, washington, etc. where if you lose you lose to a good, big name team and if you win it looks damn good.
And frankly it would be more exciting for the fans playing a big name.

As I posted in another thread I hope this team is ready to go for the bowl. I get it...this blows hard. It sucks. But I actually think the bowl game is important this year.
Michigan has not finished in the top 5-7ish at the end of the season in what, 20 years? They can this year. I think that is important. Only one team wins the NC every year. Michigan needs to take the next step and finish in the top 10 at the end of the year, every year. It's important for recruiting and puts a spotlight on the team going into the next year.
It's a good look to beat georgia (or whoever) in a bowl and UM be a team that can say they are a top 10 team each year and always in contention and in the national discussion.

Do not want to play Florida again. Tired of playing them. Now that UCF is without Milton, if they lose, could be Boise State vs Michigan in the fiesta bowl.
