NYT on Michigan-Ohio State
November 22nd, 2018 at 11:50 AM ^
This is beautiful. Michigan is the Yankees and osu is the Red Sox. They have the recent history, but we have the all-time history. They constantly compare themselves to us, trying to reach our standards. Winning this one would be a wonderful return to the historical norm.
November 22nd, 2018 at 11:58 AM ^
I don't think the comparison works
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:00 PM ^
Yeah, no
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:22 PM ^
I'm a Yankee fan, so I love this comparison, Indy Pete. Rock on!
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:37 PM ^
-1 because I can't downvote twice
November 22nd, 2018 at 11:56 AM ^
Ironic that Putin would post an article from the NYT...
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:15 PM ^
You must've missed my op-ed a few years back.
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:08 PM ^
“It is likely that we are witnessing not Michigan’s rejuvenation, but rather the latest stage of the elegantly managed decline of a great empire. Which, to be honest, seems rather in tune with the times.”
This piece sucks.
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:11 PM ^
Yeah, they can eat a bag of dicks for that one.
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:21 PM ^
Weird. There was nothing about toxic masculinity in a NYT’s article about an event played by men.
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:23 PM ^
This is what we in the industry like to refer to as "purple prose"
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:26 PM ^
Yup. New York slimes is a rag. This piece was garbage.
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:47 PM ^
The next, and concluding, paragraph is worse -- and not supported by the rest of the article:
"Who has it better than Michigan? For now, no one. For how long? Maybe not very long at all."
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:55 PM ^
They seem to be projecting their own story.
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:01 PM ^
Agreed. Repeated slights throughout the piece.
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:17 PM ^
Elegantly managed decline?
Who was Dave Brandon then?
Emperor Nero?
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:40 PM ^
They were both fiddlers.
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:16 PM ^
Don’t like the Yankees/Red Sox analogy at all. Hardly fits.
I also don’t see this anymore as a referendum on Harbaugh. We’ve got our guy. I felt that way even throughout last season.
And this - “Almost everything Ohio State does — academically, athletically, or otherwise — they compare to Michigan,” he said. “Michigan almost never does that.”
For sure... we are in a league of our own. Winninest program ever. Go Blue!
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:21 PM ^
Interesting read. Quoting Ramzy of 11w no less: "The story is that Ohio State’s aspiration is to be Michigan."
The historic vs the modern angle is one reason why I just created a diary post (50 Years of The Game), to see how one-sided the rivalry has been as of late. Even with the current OSU dominance, the last 50 years have been surprisingly even.
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:23 PM ^
'Steady' it? We want to set fire to it and hope it burns down their whole stankin' city and takes their lyin'-azz coach with it. Steady it? I don't think so! We want to get them back to punching players and breaking down markers!
Besides, the only chip Ohio has on its shoulder is the lower-class resentment of a country cousin for a beautiful, popular, and famous city cousin. Yoohoo! In the overalls! We're over here and we're coming for you!
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^
You're a very stinky globule of fascist human shit, M. May you be raped by a thousand camels in heat wearing bad cologne. May you choke by forced deepthroat on a thousand Monopoly boards rolled into dick shapes and shoved down your dirty gullet. May you be fattened, sliced, diced, roasted and fed to the poor on this very ThanksTAKING day. Have a good one!
November 22nd, 2018 at 2:38 PM ^
I've never seen anyone get banned on Thanksgiving, but you've sure given it your best effort.
November 22nd, 2018 at 2:52 PM ^
We're sorry you feel that way, but we did want a block of flats, nice though the abattoir is.
November 22nd, 2018 at 3:08 PM ^
Was never 100% clear where you were going with that, Mr. Ufer. But I appreciate the malintent!
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:39 PM ^
Fan base wise the Yankees and OSU are damn near identical. Those idiots in the Bronx want to fire Boone after a 100 win season and finishing second in the division...just ignoring the fact that Boston was a historically good team this past year. But hey, FIRE BOONE!
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:28 PM ^
Right, right, uh huh. Except, in the years I've been reading this blog, I've seen people all-caps scream for Rich Rod, Hoke, and Borges to be FIRED, with endless posts of agreement. There was a movement that germinated here that lead to public protests that got the A.D. fired. Since Harbaugh Year One, we've seen posts calling for HIM to fired, and, ohmygod, Pep Hamilton. People have called for Beilein's firing--before and after his Final Four appearance. Anyway...yeah.
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:34 PM ^
Something something about the parallel I'm making about having things good and winning and calling for the coach to be fired. But hey ignore that!
November 22nd, 2018 at 3:27 PM ^
Who cares about parallels when a poster prefer perpendiculars?
November 22nd, 2018 at 12:48 PM ^
The writer, or the editor, should have cut out the last 3 paragraphs and ended with a simple non-conclusive sentence, such as, "time will tell" after the question mark.
It was also silly to give the guy from 11 warriors equal billing with John U. Bacon.

November 22nd, 2018 at 1:01 PM ^
We could reach their standards just for once and i would be pretty happy
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:06 PM ^
The New York Times editorial department has never let facts get in the way of their opinion. If this was being graded in high school it would get a C+, an A for research and an F for logic.

"we may not be witnessing Michigans rejuvenation but their elegantly managed continuation into decline" - I got news for ya bud Michigan aint going anywhere. Yes College footballs landscape is tougher today but Michigan is back to being a power right now, deal with it. And the author is completely incorrect with his assertion that its not recruiting but "management" that is key. Recruiting does matter, alot. Look at the recent champions, all of them are in the top 10 if not top 5 in recruiting, in fact recruiting is probably the number one factor in modern college football. Hey, Western Michigan can have Donald Trump as the manager and they aint winning a national title
November 22nd, 2018 at 2:07 PM ^
The guy was born with the whole silver spoon factory in his mouth but bankrupted his companies SIX times, including 4 CASINO'S!!! ONLY a shithead shithole shit for brains MORAN can MISMANAGE a casino into bankruptcy, but this lemon pumpkin haired Nazi loving bent nose thug did it FOUR TIMES!!!
He's a good manager to you???????? Holy shit!!!!
November 22nd, 2018 at 6:40 PM ^
Yea I could have thought that one out a little better lol
November 22nd, 2018 at 6:48 PM ^
Dude!!! Anger issues much? This here blog would be much better without you.
November 22nd, 2018 at 3:29 PM ^
Maybe think of a better manager next time, champ.
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:21 PM ^
To hell with the Yankees. And Boston. And Ohio State. And Notre Dame.
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:33 PM ^
Did not enjoy the last sentence but Michigan will, for the foreseeable future, have an uphill battle when it comes to recruiting. Michigan needs to recruit virtually nationally to capture enough talent to compete, while there is probably enough talent/ population in Ohio for Ohio. Luckily, the Michigan alumni base and brand are strong in practically every inch of this country so it's doable, though it requires greater resources and effort.
November 22nd, 2018 at 2:22 PM ^
Fuck Ohio. They dont get to play the underdogs. They've won 13 of 14. They fall ass backward into 10-11 win seasons. That were the default Big 10 champion for years. They don't get to play underdogs.
November 22nd, 2018 at 2:38 PM ^
Decent article but M is not the Yankees. Unless you're from NY you hate the Yankees. I know I always have. That isn't the case with M. Guess they had to draw some kind of comparison. Think they did nail what fuels tOSU's animus though. They cannot and never will have the respect that M has.
Can assure all readers that - having moved from M 30 years ago - and landed in SoCal, there are many people from B1G country who have become friends and acquaintances. Beating Michigan is the prized desire of every B1G team. Iowa, Illinois, Minny, Wisc you name it. They all want to beat OSU don't get me wrong - but M is the biggie on every schedule. We get every teams haymaker. Every year. Never changes. Never will.
Traveled all around the country taking in many games at many a sports bar in some far flung places. There are M fans everywhere. OSU fans too. M is and will always be the shining block M at the top of the hill. tOSU is behind it jumping up and down waving its arms shouting - "Hey look at me!! I'm here too!" But no one really notices and it makes them crazed.

Great read minus the ending. And, regarding the Gold Pants, perhaps Michigan football players should receive platinum pants, lapel pins, or something for wins against Ohio State.
November 22nd, 2018 at 4:45 PM ^
Seemed kind of lazy to me. A lot of rehashing of games but no REAL insight into the game despite trying to see it at a higher level. Bo and Woody started it and it took on a life of its own from there. All the other stuff...blah blah blah.
November 22nd, 2018 at 5:40 PM ^
Well, there were insights into Ohio's inferiority complex, but that too was lazy. Fails to put the rivalry in the larger context of the kulturkampf between Ohio and Michigan. As Frank Zappa once said, I believe in the 70s, going to Columbus is like arriving in 1954. Michigan had MoTown, the Big 3, better stronger unions. Those Ohio pissants made the tires and the glass, making cut rates. Michigan was skilled labor, with a world-class university, Ohio knuckle-dragging scabs who resented the Hell out of Michigan before Bo Schembechler ever set foot in Ann Arbor. Ufer cutting on Ohio fans coming to the Big House as being toothless truck drivers. Michigan has the lakes, beaches, and natural beauty. Ohio is a series of truckstops on a turnpike that leads to places more important. That is why Ohio admires the scoundrel. All their heroes have been fired or resigned in disgrace. Ohio State is the loud drunk at the bar. Curtis "Bombs Away" Le May. Maurice Clarett. Art "the Gambler" Schlichter. Scoundrels do not follow the rules because they think the rules were created to keep them down. Ohio thinks that in their heart. That those losses in the mid 1990s were evidence of what they always believed--that the fix was in. Ohio fuckers cheer when a Michigan guys gets injured because their hearts are contorted. Michigan fans cheer when an injured Ohio guy gets up because our hearts are more pure. Ohio loves to hate because that is what is bred by the resentment that is inherent in their worldview. If Ohio was in charge they would have dropped the bomb on the Soviets. And said Fuck Michigan. That is what is missing from the piece. That is where the hate comes from, truly, not that Michigan kicked their ass in Yost days.
November 22nd, 2018 at 5:15 PM ^
Re the "elegant decline," Michigan and Ohio State are probably best situated to the direction college football is headed. Jim Harbaugh excelled in the NFL--towards which the author states the college game is bending. Urban Meyer has defined the last fifteen years of college football. Both coaches excel in recruiting and retaining coaching talent, which has become critical to being an elite team.
It also suffers from a serious case of recency bias. There are ebbs and flows in all rivalries.
November 22nd, 2018 at 9:13 PM ^
Screw that guy
