Coaching Rumors: James Franklin to USC, Brady Hoke to Charlotte

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on November 21st, 2018 at 2:53 PM

This story LINK details some interesting rumors out there. There's a lot of buzz this week about Franklin to USC, but this is the first I've heard that Hoke could be a leading candidate for the Charlotte job. I'd forgotten that Hoke is the DL coach for the Carolina Panthers. I'm sure he'll write the Charlotte AD a letter in all capital letters saying how much he'd like the job.

If they are missing talent at USC maybe this makes some kind of sense but Frames has a ceiling that a USC type of program should not settle for.

This could be the best scenario for PSU.

If I were USC, I'd wait and go offer the Hollywood sign to get some guy named Pete Carroll (who's on the hot seat in Seattle) back. Let's just leave Franklin right where he's at! I like having him and his giant brain farts in the B1G Ten East!

Pretty funny that the PSU job has become a launching pad for coaches (O'Brien, Franklin) to get better jobs.  I guess they are not as big time as they thought they were.

What does Franklin even bring to the table for USC?

If you are just going to hire a figurehead that is going to watch everybody else do all the work you can go get Herm.

Franklin likes to flirt with other jobs to get himself a pay raise.  Unless he really wants to get out of the Big Ten East (or just wants to live in L.A.) I don't see much point of this for him.

Got to give Franklin credit for recruiting. In a place where the death penalty was a given, I couldn't believe he was getting recruits to Penn State. Good recruits. In a time when they couldn't go to a bowl. Friggin 4 and 5 stars! To this day I don't understand why any player would want to go there back then, so props to Franklin for that.

What USC needs more than anything else is a coaching staff that can develop players.  It seems like USC's recruiting was fine, and I don't think Helton has a terrible rep as a game manager.  But, the offensive line has been a disaster, and the defensive line has been disappointing  To be sure, recruiting could be better; USC isn't top 3 every year.  But, be better at the rest and the recruiting will improve from an already healthy level.  Franklin strikes me as sort of mixed on that score.

So, I would think that Franklin is more valuable at Penn State where you can entertain the idea of regular top-ten recruiting classes, but you gotta have an excellent recruiter to achieve that.

Things seem to go sour quickly once the head coach starts yelling at people in the stands after games, so I'm not really shocked, but I am surprised USC would consider Franklin.

Anyway, good luck to Hoke.

Can’t blame franklin for wanting out of the meat grinder that is the B1G East whereas he’ll be teaching basic tackling techniques to PAC 12 players and facing off with arch rivals AZ and AZ St. ?

Hoke is seriously the DL coach for the Panthers? I totally lost track of where he ended up. I guess I’m glad he’s got a job but wow...
