James Franklin Implies Michigan's DBs Are Well Coached at Holding

Submitted by cweerapp on November 1st, 2018 at 9:07 PM

Full story here but relevant portion:

“They hold. They grab, they hold, they tug, they pull. They get called for it a decent amount, but they also get away with it a lot more....They’re gonna run with ya and be in your hip, but while they’re in your hip they’re grabbin’ your pants, grabbing your hip, very rarely is it the jersey because you see the jersey, they’re well coached at it.”

You can read the desperation in his comments this week.  He's already lost to OSU and MSU at home, barely got by Iowa, and is now on the road against a pissed-off Michigan.  This is the type of game where you look back and realize "oh, that's when Franklin's magic ran out."

LOL...

what a clown... shocked that recruits don't see what fraud this guy is...? He was brutal until Moorhead was hired, and unlocked Saquan and McSorley.

with Moorhead and Barkley gone, his program is starting to go underwater again.. once McSorley goes, i expect him to drop back into the 8-9 win category

1) It's not implied, it's explicit.

2) This would be a bitch comment after the game. Before the game, he should be saying this. What's wrong with working the refs? That's the job.

He isn’t wrong and it’s a smart move to try to influence the refs to look for it going into the game. Since franklin is a shit game day coach smart of him to try to gain some advantage going in.

I guess if we are playing that game Harbaugh should drop a line about the constant holds opposing olines get away with against the best d-line in the conference

I get that Franklin's a jabroni, but there's nothing wrong with him saying this.

It's true.  Brian used to say it all the time about State (and the Seahawks) and people generally agreed with him.  It sucks when it happens against you, but it's great we've picked up on it.

Jesus the comments section here is a shit show. He's not a moron for pointing it out and it's not a slight against Michigan's DB's or their coaches. They do hold and DPI a fuck ton, and they get away with it. They do it because great defenses started doing it years ago when they realized the refs just aren't going to call it every time it happens. Furthermore, if he IS getting the refs to keep an eye on it then it isn't a bitch move, it's a smart tactical move to try and give his team a legit advantage against people that are actually breaking the rules of the game.

Fundamentally, what is the difference between well coached holding by DBs and well coached holding by OL?

Trick question, there isn't one.

I don't think Franklin is whining as much as he's implying envy.  As in, he wishes his DBs were as well coached in the nuances of holding without being obvious or blatant.  He could have said the same thing about the Michigan offensive line, that they are well coached to hold onto the jersey or shoulder pads inside the shoulders so that it isn't obvious.  He could have said it, but since his guys are just as good or better at it, there was no need to mention it.

He is trying to play mind games to throw off our DBs.

For years the BigTen refs let MSU's secondary be very physical.  It is foolish to not follow suit.  Just like it is foolish for Penn State not to hold our Dline, everyone else does and it is rarely called.

What a pathetic bitch Franklin is. I hope Harbaugh runs the score up on these clowns. Oh no, they clutch and grab, just like every good defensive back ever!

You know, I think James Franklin has finally figured out that he's a hateable human being and is just rolling with it at this point, especially within the context of the Big Ten.

After all, he blew up when someone asked about McSorley's knee yesterday, I believe. I mean, what did he want the reporter to ask? How much carnauba wax it takes to polish that head of his?
