2019 recruiting class discussion
Apologies in advance for those who only like to discuss the upcoming game this week. However, with the commitment of Hill, I thought it would be good to take a look at how the class is looking so far.
I feel like this is a solid B+ class at this point. I am not one of the stargazers who gets upset when Harbaugh takes a lower ranked prospect because he has a pretty good track record for getting productive players that are lower in the rankings. However, getting some elite talent in every class is obviously important.
Offense:
McNamara is a fine prospect at qb, absolutely love our RB tandem, and really like the additions of Jackson and Stewart as slot weapons, as well as All at TE. OL is so tough to tell. Would feel better if we had a 5 star tackle committed but wouldn’t we all. If we add Keegan I feel it’s a very good OL haul. Only obvious weakness is outside receiver. I think Kent will outplay his ranking and should move up, but we really need a guy like Kyle Ford.
Defense:
Adding Daxton is obviously huge. We haven’t had an elite true safety in a long time. The rest of the secondary recruits seem solid, but not spectacular. A really good DL class already, getting someone like Harrison or Karlaftis would just be icing on the cake. I think Hinton will be in the Aubrey Solomon mold. I like Velasquez as a Viper and we have enough young LBs that this doesn’t seem like a crucial need this year.
Overall I think the class will have 26 or 27 commits. Would really like to finish with at least Keegan and a very good WR. Anything above should be considered a luxury.

FWIW Sam Webb said Karlaftis called the Michigan coaches just last week. If Purdue continues losing games....

Yeah anything's possible and seems like staff is still after him. It was just a surprising hard commit to Purdue initially. Early theories were if Purdue took off and Brohm might get poached we'd have a shot. Now theories are Purdue stinks and so he might look around. Recruiting is weird. Would be great to have him but I'd be more surprised by this flip than landing some of the uncommitted top guys.

Either way, Purdue needs to get rid of the Holtroid.
i can't imagine there's enough cognitive dissonance in anyone not to see the relationship between his poppin' veins and the lack of discipline from that defense.

Purdue is off to a horrid start, and it will probably get worse.
Root for Washington State over USC. USC is off to a horrid start. Ford very well could take a closer look at us if USC keeps falling apart.

Michigan had 6 decommits in both 17 and 18(counting Solomon). I don't think we will see anything close to what we saw in 2016 with 11. This year is likely to see couple more after seeing Herron and Couch decommit.
Not sure if the early signing period will change anything. Last year the there were two late decommits in Reese and Doyle both flipping around signing day.

When was Couch committed? Did I miss something?
September 19th, 2018 at 1:29 PM ^
Yeah he committed for like a week, just to get Miami to "put a ring on it".
September 19th, 2018 at 1:35 PM ^
Te'Cory Couch committed as a surprise in the spring and decommitted in the summer.

We're taking a lot of 3* players. Way more than OSU or PSU. Granted their classes are much smaller at this point. And we're rated #4 nationally and #1 in the Big 10. So whatever.
September 19th, 2018 at 1:11 PM ^
Yes. Barring anything unforeseen that last stat will change. We will end up with probably 2-3 times the number of three stars than OSU.
September 19th, 2018 at 1:28 PM ^
Ugh. Every. Fucking. Year.
September 19th, 2018 at 3:15 PM ^
It's ok. We just need a 5star ref to pledge to Michigan, then we can actually win these games against OSU. Osu just has a much better ref recruits and it pays out for them come Nov

I think Keegan is a must get. Either karlaftis or Harrison would be great, I think karlaftis is closer to playing right away than Zach who is more of a project with a high ceiling. Ford would be huge but at this point not holding my breath, just glad Michigan is still in the running. Cine is a guy that they don’t necessarily NEED but would be awesome to have to really solidify the safety position. I think he’s a Michigan lean. I don’t hear much on crouch, I know he really talked Michigan up over the summer but they never got the love from recruiting analysts when it came to his recruitment. The fact that most teams are looking at him as a LB now could really help Michigan in this battle. Most consistent top defense over harbaugh’s tenure. It sounds like the current commits really love Michigan and do their best to show top targets that they can build something special. Of course there’s always decommitments and whatnot. As long as daxton and charbonnet stay with Michigan, I would be content.

Picking up a decommit today. Kid from Don Brown country.
September 19th, 2018 at 1:26 PM ^
Which could help with Cine!
September 19th, 2018 at 1:27 PM ^
whatchu talking about Willis?
September 19th, 2018 at 1:33 PM ^
If he's SAIN and you sit RIS TILL, it may come to you
September 19th, 2018 at 1:54 PM ^
16 year old on Instagram has all the info. He's not InSAIN.......!!! Kid can fly.

When is Myles Hinton expected to announce? I know he’s a top 10 guy and they tend to take their time, and he’s 2020, but I’d feel a lot better about our future OL if we had him locked up.

Has there been anything more on Devontae Dobbs? I know he's committed to msu, but why did Michigan not go after a 5* O-Lineman who grew up in the shadow of Ann Arbor? Is there more to the story?
September 19th, 2018 at 3:07 PM ^
There's a lot to the story, do some searching.
September 19th, 2018 at 6:17 PM ^
Its been discussed ad nauseam on this site. He's not coming, thats all there really is to it at this point.
September 19th, 2018 at 2:39 PM ^
I have a hard time seeing Eric Gray staying in this class with all the noise that is surrounding him. I really think he is an electric player and think losing him would be pretty unfortunate
September 19th, 2018 at 3:31 PM ^
I think it is really silly to worry about negative hypotheticals at this time. Take an extra Prozac.
September 19th, 2018 at 4:07 PM ^
Am I the only one that doesn't see it in Hintons film? Decent prospect, but doesn't look like a 5 star to me
September 19th, 2018 at 4:50 PM ^
Assuming there will be some jostling at the edges, this feels like a solid 7-12 class, with a couple of sleepers and some top line talent. It's a nice bounce back from last year, though as noted it would be nice of there was one larger WR. The offensive line feels fine and who knows, maybe there is a flip or a late commit to shore it up.
September 19th, 2018 at 5:56 PM ^
I like the class
QB - adding another 4-star - take one every year
RB - 2 excellent players
FB - don't need one this class
TE - All is a composite 4-star now - we're good here, plus Patterson in 20
WR - Giles, Johnson and Kent - Kent is having a nice senior year and will be good - I like where we are, and Branham coming in 20
OT - Jones and Stewart - would like one more here
Interior OL - Rumler, Barnhart and Carpenter will be fine - we have Filiaga, Spanellis and Paea behind our starters still
DE's - 1 more SDE or WDE would be nice, but not needed
DT - Hinton, Woods and Smith give us immediate help and longer term help, plus Warren in 20
LB - with just Thomas in 19 and McGrone in 18, seems thin - would like one more
CB - DJ is good and took 3 in 18 and Seldon lined up for 20
S - solid
overall, very happy - would like an OT to be complete, and a LB and WDE/SDE as icing on the cake, plus anyone highly rated
September 19th, 2018 at 8:38 PM ^
Great breakdown.
Honingford in the interior as well. He looked good against WMU.
I think they will get one of the three OT they still seem to be in on. The LB recruiting is weird this year. Have you seen any other LBs they are in on?
September 19th, 2018 at 9:42 PM ^
I still think there is a shot with Quavaris Crouch who could play any LB position it seems. He alluded that if Michigan wins this year, he'd have them as the top choice.
September 19th, 2018 at 9:46 PM ^
re: Tall WR - if they miss on Ford and Johnson, I could see them intensify their pursuit of Trevon Raphael (6'3" 190 out of OH)
If Michigan gets one of Keegan, Ike or Benhart i'll be happy.
