If Devin threw for 400+ yds against Ohio with a broken foot, well, wow...
December 26th, 2013 at 11:59 AM ^
Devin Gardner broke his left foot on the 2nd drive of 3rd Q of #OhioState game, per source. Tried to battle thru it for #Michigan that day.

A fracture is (usually) a pretty cut and dry type of injury. But yet, here we have Hoke saying Devin's got "Turf Toe" up until today. I really don't get it. What's the point of lying?
December 26th, 2013 at 12:16 PM ^
A fracture of the sesamoid in combination with a complete tear of the plantar complex is typically classified as a severe grade 3 turf toe injury.
So, in typical Hoke fashion, what he said was entirely truthful but wasn't the entirety of the truth. And the advantage would be that K-State has, unless they guessed right, had to game plan for the possiblity of a running QB.

You can see him noticably limping as he goes to the sideline.

You mean of course the NO fumble play after which Ohio was given the football.
December 26th, 2013 at 11:48 AM ^
Pretty much confirming that the result of this game will be about as irrelevant as any bowl game in Michigan history.
Think about it: All of our goals are smoked. Nobody will remember or care about the actual final record. The opponent is ok, not outstanding. The time slot is buried. The result will have no bearing on either the expectations or the actual performance next year at all. And if we lose (particularly if the offense stinks) there is a built-in "we started our freshman backup" excuse.
The fact is, Michigan needs to produce in a big way next season or there will be despair, chaos, and mass season ticket attrition. What happens Saturday will not have any effect on this.
Perversely, this absence of stakes will make Saturday's game more entertaining to watch, because there is less fear involved. At least, for me.
December 26th, 2013 at 11:53 AM ^
I agree. I just hope recruits see it that way.
December 26th, 2013 at 3:08 PM ^
isn't ready to go... to use the cliche - that is all. Shane has a solid year of this system - tailored to his drop back ness. There are no excuses here.
This is a football game just like the last one and all of them before that one. There are no missing stakes because one guy can't go and another can. There are winners and losers. That is all that is ever at stake in any football play.
I, at least, will be just as pouty if we lose regardless of who steps up.
The ticket attrition has already made it's way into DB's mind I'm sure. I look forward to how Michigan responds to this year. This game (as did OSU) has very high stakes in my mind if I am paying the bills.

So does this mean if the game doesnt go well the new chart on Sunday will include "Put in Cleary?"

"fuck" | 2302 | 191.83 | 166.49 | 47.53% |
"shit" | 583 | 48.58 | 27.74 | 12.04% |

I had previously steered away from the idea of doing a special bowl edition of "The State Of Our Open Threads", but having read this thread so far, I may very well do just that and change up the QB replacement metric a little bit. Rather than Cleary, however, I believe there were a few articles out there which said Bellomy was taking reps as the #2 QB for the game, but I could be mistaken.
December 26th, 2013 at 12:31 PM ^
I looked up who our #2 would be but couldnt find anything that specifically said it would be either one. Maybe if things go REAL badly you'll sadly need to make a new collumn for both.
December 26th, 2013 at 12:50 PM ^
although I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere. I read of several occasions where a sixth year was granted in similar situations. I don't believe you qualify if you recover and play during the year which means he would blow his redshirt. I'm sure the coaches would like to avoid that situation if at all possible.
I'm hoping someone with more knowledge of medical redshirts can confirm this but I did a lot of searching earlier in the week.
Here is a prior MGoBlog post that addresses it.

Bellomy would have had to sit another year due to injury. Bellomy got a RS as a freshman, but there it wasn't because of injury, making getting a 6th year much more difficult.

I'm excited by this. Finally Borges has his prototypical prostyle QB. /s
I have to admit though ... this does add drama and interest in this match up - from an avid fan perspective. Not all freshmen fail out of the box. Shane has a frosh err of chaos about him that could bring victory.
Go Blue!
December 26th, 2013 at 11:55 AM ^
To me, the drama will be the same as watching one of those nature documentaries where a bunch of Orcas play with a seal on a rapidly-shrinking ice sheet. I'll just hope they don't finish him off too violently.
December 26th, 2013 at 11:58 AM ^
It now has that "Spring Game" feel where the outcome is pointless, but you are very interested to see how the team looks in its new configuration.
December 26th, 2013 at 12:16 PM ^
Kansas State is a well coached team however. If you are an avid CFB type - you watch the game and don't listen to the hype.
I enjoyed ntOSU take down Boise. Bowl season is beer season. Shane is a five starish ness fresh of breath air. Hackenberg did well enough - let's go Shane.
December 26th, 2013 at 11:50 AM ^
are probably so happy!...well, happy until they see how much they are missing DG and realizing how bad this offense is with a normal QB who cannot scramble nearly as well
December 26th, 2013 at 11:56 AM ^
...with others who say this is a good thing. I don't dislike Gardner, but it was painful watching his confidence erode game after game this year. He seemed so lost out there at times.
Maybe Shane will play within himself, deploy the KISS methodology and end up with a win. Wouldn 't that be cool?
December 26th, 2013 at 12:10 PM ^
I am supporting Shane Morris 100% and hope he has a great game...I am just waiting for the haters to start talking smack like they have all year....put DG on Oregon's team and he is easily a heisman contender
December 26th, 2013 at 4:56 PM ^
for sure. Too bad for Devin, wish him a speedy recovery, and the job is his come spring ball. I expect Shane to come out looking like the young, talented, yet inexperienced guy that he is, but I think some of you might be surprised at his mobility. He may not be Devin, but he can move.
December 26th, 2013 at 11:51 AM ^
While I always want Michigan to win, this is a fairly meaningless game, so it's OK for Shane to get the start. He needs experience, so this will be good for him.

It's late December. He's a Freshman in name only. I don't think he'll be phenomenal, but he's hardly defenseless.

against OSU. I was surprised given the poor performance against lesser NU OL. Hopefully the extra practice will help out.
I hope Shane has a great game. It will be great if Michigan could win this game.

Regardless, best of luck on Saturday, Shane. This is the opportunity you've been waiting for. Now go out and make the most of it.
December 26th, 2013 at 11:57 AM ^
Hopefully Borges can show what he is made of, gold or shit, and call a helluva game Saturday night. By now, he should know Morris' strengths and weaknesses when it comes to different offensive packages. So I am expecting a bigger variety of run plays mixed with god-knows-what style of pass plays.
Over/Under: FOUR Zone-Reads/Options while Shane Morris in the game. I choose over, unfortunately.
December 26th, 2013 at 11:57 AM ^
I think this is a good chance for Shane to get some much needed experience. On a smaller stage in a game with little implications, there won't be as much pressure as there was on Bellomy against Nebraska. Somebody is going to have to take the helm when Gardner leaves and I think this gives him a huge jump on that.
Make us proud, Shane!
December 26th, 2013 at 11:58 AM ^
I know there are people who are super-psyched about Morris getting the start, but nothing could be a more fitting end to 2013 than a true freshman with a live arm, limited pocket presence, and all of the jitters running for his life behind a mediocre line while a bunch of Wildcats bear down on him.
December 26th, 2013 at 11:59 AM ^
Be afraid, be very afraid!
In all seriousness, I figured it was going to be a loss anyways. That's just the way this year is going fellas. It's just one of those kind of years.
December 26th, 2013 at 12:00 PM ^
I think it makes this game more exciting. Let's be honest, nobody is really interested watching Michigan playing at 10 pm in the BWW bowl. But with Shane making his first career start, Im much more intrigued. The outcome may not be desirable, but Im excited to see how Shane looks and commands the offense.
Now the scary part is, is which Al Borges shows up? Im hoping for the one that calls no PA passes on 3rd and long. Shane hasnt had enough practice running for his life.
