Thursday Recruitin' Gets Orca'd Comment Count

Just When You Thought It Was Safe...

Jabrill Peppers reaffirmed his commitment this week. So did Shaun Crawford. Michigan had successfully weathered the storm caused by their on-field woes. And then...

GEORGE CAMPBELL OUTTA NOWHERE.

According to multiple outlets, Campbell actually decided to decommit last week, but waited until this week to inform the coaches of his decision. Steve Lorenz relays the news that Florida, Florida State, and Clemson (ugh) are involved in Campbell's recruitment, and while Michigan isn't out of the picture, they're losing perhaps their biggest edge ($):

Yesterday, I tweeted out that Michigan was still in it for Campbell after his decommitment. I still believe this, but after doing some digging while on the road today, I'm not sure how high the Wolverines are on his list at this point. If you forced me to choose, I believe he ends up somewhere else. Where that is, I don't know. Mason Cole leaving for Michigan within the next two weeks is about the worst thing that could happen in this regard because their friendship was a big part of getting Campbell committed in the first place. Without Cole in his ear and Michigan being a ways away, the excitement about the Wolverines could fade over time.

The Wolverines will continue to pursue Campbell and in-state athlete Brian Cole as their top priorities for receiver in the 2015 class; after being in great shape for both just a few months ago, however, there's a distinct possibility that both end up elsewhere—there's a very good chance Campbell stays in the South, while Cole may be a Michigan State lean and also has interest in Ohio State. Michigan's very strong group of 2014 receivers mitigates some of the hurt from this, but there's no sugarcoating the loss of one of the nation's top prospects, especially when it seems directly tied to uncertainty (real or perceived) regarding the program.

It might not end with Campbell, either. Shortly after that decommitent went public, fellow 2015 blue chip commit Damien Harris tweeted "Here comes the tough decision.." which, well, obviously raised some red flags given the timing. That could very well be nothing, however, as Harris—unlike Campbell, a childhood fan of Florida—grew up rooting for Michigan; he also subsequently retweeted fellow recruit Justin Hilliard questioning why anyone would commit to a school without "110%" certainty, as well as today's news about Michigan scheduling the game against Florida in Dallas in 2017, when he'd be a junior. Since Harris' first tweet has garnered a lot of attention, I figured I'd add some context—for now, at least, it seems early to panic.

This entire sports year post-Final Four can still die in a fire, though.

The Dead Period

Before I go any further, it's worth noting that as of Monday we're in a recruiting dead period until January 15th. Brandon has a board post detailing what that means; in short, coaches can contact recruits via mail or phone but no in-person contact is allowed. Recruiting news may be a bit sparse for the next few weeks until the pre-NSD flurry of activity.

Scout Updates 2014, 2015 Rankings

As usual, Touch The Banner has the full rundown on the updated 2014 Scout300, which saw Freddy Canteen leap all the way from outside the list to #171 overall (#32 WR). Other movement for Michigan commits was either relatively minor (Peppers moved up to #4 from #6) or expected (Drake Harris, who missed this season with a hamstring injury, dropped from #30 to #54).

Scout also revised their 2015 rankings, featuring Shaun Crawford making a healthy 20-spot jump to #65 overall. Damien Harris is the second-ranked running back at #32 overall, while Tyree Kinnel makes the list at #220. Also of potential interest: after previously being unranked, Brother Rice QB Alex Malzone earned his fourth star and the #252 overall spot in the rankings, one place ahead of CA QB Kevin Dillman. With Josh Rosen and David Sills, the two 2015 quarterbacks with Michigan offers, currently regarded as probable longshots, Malzone is certainly one to keep an eye on. Frankly, I'm much more impressed with his film than I am with Sills'.

Etc.

If you missed it, Brandon provided updates on 2014 TX RB Vic Enwere and 2015 CA QB Josh Rosen.

2015 commit Jon Runyan Jr.'s St. Joseph's Prep squad captured the program's first Pennsylvania Class AAAA state title last week.

Notre Dame's coaches really want Nyles Morgan. One intrepid Notre Dame fan is really unclear about who TomVH is.

I'll take that as a 'yes'. The saga of Denzel Ward continues. Bobby Petrino locks down the nation's #1 class (NOTY category).

These are the two best NOTY by far.

More importantly, what are Wonderful Terry's siblings named? Is he a first child or last child. Do the names get better or worse? SO MANY QUESTIONS!

I have a hard time keeping Drake and Damian seperate in my mind. When you (Ace) wrote how Drake missed the season I thought 'gee I thought he broke KY HS rushing records this year'.

I very much hope they both keep their commitments but it may be difficult keeping them straight once they're on the team as well. (D HARRIS JUST MADE A GREAT DYNAMIC OFFENSIVE PLAY!!!)

Dear Young Recruits,

110% staff/personnel certainty doesn't exist anywhere you'll ever work in life, especially in pro or college(pro) sports. Alumni base(for post-career), fun factor(Notre Dame? Really?), facilities (damn near everybody), and national visibility(a small handful) are what you should choose for, along with maybe academics as the work you will do in college will be extremely easy. Js, Rt.

Remember, Kenny Demens, Stevie Brown, Mike Cox, Junior Hemingway,  Ryan Mundy, Will Campbell, and countless other payers that worked hard here at UM and elsewhere still made it to the NFL under the iffiest of shakiest of shittiest of coaching situations. It's about you and what you put into your career despite what TV heads, rabid unknowing fans, and coaching contracts tell you. Remember, the school should make the coach, not the other way around.

Sincerely,

The Voice of Reason

This was another good update, but the end point for the George Campbell part (..."directly tied to uncertainty (real or perceived) regarding the program" doesn't need the "perceived" qualifier - for 2015 recruits, there is uncertainty regarding the program. That's just a fact.

I realize, technically speaking, every program could have significant changes in 2015 (e.g., Saban could leave Alabama; Briles could leave Baylor; etc), but UM's staff is on the clock for 2015 in a way many of our major competitors are not (OSU, MSU, ND). The only "certainity" is Brady Hoke will be the coach for 2014 (which I'm sure helps with Peppers et al) but for a 2015 recruit like Campbell, he's not dumb -- if Hoke puts up another 7-5 season (or even 8-4) season in 2014, it's extremely likely Hoke's gone.

That's why we can't even really worry about 2015 recruits right now, as much as losing Campbell stinks. It's all about on the field in 2014: Win at a significant clip in 2014, including wins over rivals, and 2015 will almost take care of itself. However, if 2014 goes poorly (or even just OK), 2015 will be a mess anyway.

Brandon was compelled to write an impassioned blog post to try and quell the rising disgruntlement when Hoke went 7-4 (soon to be 7-5) this year (and we were competitive in all our losses). You think if Hoke (at 8-4) posts essentially the same record the very next season, it would be "unlikely" that he would be fired?

I think that is dreaming. With Urban going 24-1 at OSU and Dantonio taking MSU to the Rose Bowl and ND one year removed from a NC game, the super fan, big donor alums are not going to put up with three 4-5 loss seasons in a row while our main rivals are enjoying stellar/near-stellar seasons.

Hopefully, UM will win 10 or more games next year, and all this will be moot. But Hoke is on the clock, whether you think it is fair or not. Campbell realizes it, and we should to.

I don't agree that Hoke is on the clock. Making another coaching change does nothing but negate any progress that has been made toward improving the state of the program. If anyone is on the clock, it's Borges and that is fine by me.

1) You can feel Hoke deserves until 2015 even if he goes 7-5 or 8-4 in 2014 (e.g., b/c you like the recruiting). That's fine. I can see that. But that doesn't change the fact in modern, big time football, no coach can have three straight overall disappointing seasons (losing more often than he wins against major rivals) and keep his job. It just doesn't happen anymore. The big donors won't stand for it and attendance will suffer.

2) Also, I would argue with your premise that, if Hoke goes 7-5/8-4, that many fans would say there has been "progress" and the state of the program has been "improved." If when UM was going through the head coach search post-RR, and Brandon said -- "If we hire this next coach, UM won't compete for a B1G title, in any serious way, until his 5th season at the earliest; and forget being a natl title contender" - do you think people would sign up for that?

Hoke needs to have a very good year in 2014. Doesn't matter what you or I think -- that's the reality.

I'm sure we're both under the assumption that 2014 will be a better season. 2013 was an abarration. Thankfully it's almost over. I won't forget, but at this point I don't care about what happened during past decade. I only have hope for next season and I fully support our coaches and players because that's all what we have to work with. I'm going to make the most of it.  That's my reality. It doesn't matter what you think.

This article is about 2015 recruiting. My point is simple: for a number of schools if they go 7-5 or 8-4 in 2014, the chance Dantonio, Meyer or Kelly (to pick three names that we often recruit against) are going to get fired is 0%.

If UM goes 7-5 or 8-4 in 2014, while you might think it is unlikey (say, 20%) and I might think it is very likely (say, 80%), the point is the same: if you are a 2015 recruit, it is clear Hoke does not have the mulligan that other coaches do. Only by having a 10 win or more season in 2014 can Hoke completely remove the real uncertainity that is out there for a 2015 recruit.

I think we both hope he does that and the team has real success next year, so I'll just leave it there for now.

Man, February can't get here fast enough.  Not sure if its the new mindset of recruits, or the negativity from the mediocre season, but following recruiting (at least at UM) has become mentally draining.  Am I off base, or just too fanatical about it?

Why does recruiting seem so grim lately?  Has there ever been any analysis of our recruiting trends over the course of a calendar year?  I don't know if it's just my impression because I have an obvious bias, or if it's reality, but it seems we start hot every year and crap the bed late.  We get excited we will have a better class than OSU, then each year OSU overtakes us. I don't want to sound like sour grapes because we are still having great classes, but it's hard not to be frustrated when we continue to be mediocre on the field.  It give you the sense we HAVE to land these kids like Harris, Campbell, Peppers, Hand, etc. that are top national kids from out of the region and it hurts when it seems like they are a lock or even a lean and then they go somewhere else or decommit.

Magnus

December 20th, 2013 at 6:20 AM ^

It's grim because we've been filling up the classes early, so there's literally no news except bad news at this point. Everybody we were pursuing is committing or getting ready to commit, but we only have 1 or 2 spots, so the majority of those guys are going to commit elsewhere. It happened last year, too. Obviously, Campbell is a 2015 kid, but the fact that we're so far out means anything can happen. This is the "price you pay" when you follow recruiting. If they commit early, you fret over whether they'll flip elsewhere; if they commit late, you fret over whether they'll pick another school and leave you scrambling for other options.

I sure hope that Borges is fired soon ("all I want for Christmas")!!!.......Otherwise, M will not be capable of keeping recruits or recruiting new at skill posistions.  At a pay scale of $2,000 per pound M gets pathetic play calling, abysmal clock management, no counters or contingincies, and no capability to make in game adjustments.......  Don't even have a coach that is willing to play an entire first half.  Perhaps there were 2 1/2 well coached games in the last 3 years which could probably be chalked up to luck.

The State of Michigan needs to produce more D1 4* and 5* football athletes for our program to recruit locally and to be more successful.

Recruiting is hard on a long term basis if Florida, Texas & Ohio produce the bulk of kids playing D1.  Those kids will naturally grow up rooting for a local program.

MHSAA rules really screw our state in almost every sport.  They force the private (expensive) programs to take care of development.
