Afternoon Games Open Thread

When NC vs. GT is your best FOOTBALL game, it's hard to get excited. The afternoon looks like a better warm up to tonight's events.

So, this drive has been productive for the Spartans....and not throwing the football on a 4th and long attempt really doesn't help you here.

Funny stat? Michigan State has now actually outgained the Irish here, but yeah, some horrifically inefficient drives as well as being jobbed on a call here and there hasn't been helpful.

Sparty with the textbook example of how not to execute a two minute drill.  Tough after some questionable calls but with the game on the line you have to be disciplined.

Rutgers 3-1 with a win over Arkansas and their loss to a Fresno St. team that looks like it may go undefeated and has a QB who will be an NFL draft choice.

Maryland 4-0 after demolishing West Virgina.

I'm not agreeing with the decision, but it's not like Cook was lighting it up.  He's not much of a thrower, and for of Maxwell's flaws he does have a decent arm.  I also don't buy that Cook wasn't hurt; that looked like a bad crunch he took on the last throw.  Even if it wasn't long-term injury, a weakened Cook isn't better than Maxwell.

After going 90% of the game with Cook, to make a QB switch on the last drive was a disservice to both Maxwell and Cook. Maxwell was standing on the sidelines the whole game...he clearly looked like he had been 4 plays later. Running on a 4th and 20 - even if you are Denard Robinson - is a terrible decision, clearly Maxwell wasn't ready for the moment at all. To me, it's on the coaches. Cook wasn't stellar, but at that point it was his game to win or lose for you.

If I were a Sparty fan, I'd be pretty upset with the switch to Maxwell at the end, of course assuming Cook was not injured.

Check that, if I were a Sparty fan, I'd be bitching about the refs losing us the game or something.

averaging about 4 yards a completion, I don't think it would have mattered one or another. He looks a little better than Maxwell so far, but that isn't saying much. QB is definatly not the only issue on MSU's offense.

The Rutgers win is not a total surprise. They beat Arkansas when they played there a few years ago.

was just AWFUL.  That was a classic Sparty Noooo meltdown.  Multiple penalties, then Maxwell doesn't even throw the ball in the air to give his team a chance, he just scrambles!?  Sparty gonna Spart.
