After seeing recent rulings by the bodies that govern these decisions I'll remain skeptical until it's confirmed. Logic doesn't always rule the day.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:01 PM ^
the mistakes of Tate Forcier and bad judgement of Rich Rodriguez should not cost us a 5th year of Devin Gardner.

WOAH WOAH. MSU has the second best hospitality management program in the country. Can we make the food service thing a joke over there?
November 26th, 2012 at 4:09 PM ^
The OSU connection is just that sometimes a truck arrives with more frozen patties for the Spartans to flip.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:04 PM ^
Any indication why the program has waited to apply to the Big Ten until now? At first I understood that you had to wait until the end of the fourth season to apply, but I think that idea (common around these parts for a while) has been debunked.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:07 PM ^
Strangely enough, it seems like the Michigan coaching staff was under the same misapprehension and only recently realized they didn't have to wait.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:31 PM ^
Even stranger still was the fact it was the last 2 coaching staffs that thought this.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:46 PM ^
Often times it is submitted earlier, but not actually granted until there is no eligibility remaing.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:05 PM ^
Cool. I hope this pans out. It will be nice to have that extra year, not just because he's a great player, but it gives us depth, something that was beginning to look like a problem going forward.
November 26th, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
I was wondering how Cam Newton's college career progressed. Seems like he was a late bloomer who had that one amazing season when his opportunity arrived. I think Gardner could be nearly that good (if they can find a decent running game). And he's already a better passer than Vince Young ever was, although not as fast.
And just why the hell after that last game a 5-star RB would not want to come here is beyond me. Derrick Green could probably start Game 1 of his freshman year.
November 26th, 2012 at 2:36 PM ^
Fred Jackson had a MGoBlog account
Gardner has had a few nice games against unprepared opponents with questionable defenses. Let's not shoot down the path of 'like Cam Newton but more accurate than Vince Young' just yet.
November 26th, 2012 at 2:49 PM ^
Gardner is Mike Vick fast but with a bigger arm than Elway and smarter than Brady./
Just speculating on the Cam Newton comparison, more because Cam seemed to come on late and was suddenly winning the Heisman. NOBODY could have seen that before that season. So, it can happen. Big, strong, mobile, great intangibles. Gardner could be a major star, especially if he gets two more years.
As far as the Vince Young thing, no speculation: Gardner is already a better passer than Vince Young ever was. That being said, VY did destroy Michigan and Texas in consecutive Rose Bowls with his best play being basically the broken play/scramble. Two of the best games by a college player ever.

November 26th, 2012 at 5:17 PM ^
Fred Jackson would use Michigan players for comparison, wouldn't he?
Something like: Devin Gardner is like Chad Henne except fast.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:12 AM ^
No, like Tom Brady, but faster than Denard!
November 26th, 2012 at 5:43 PM ^
I think he is a better comparison than VY or Cam. I don't think DG is quite as fast or elusive as those 2
November 26th, 2012 at 1:05 PM ^
Do we know when the decision will come down?
November 26th, 2012 at 1:13 PM ^
I really can't see this process taking too long. It seems to be a matter of looking at how much time he played in that year he was injured and comparing it to the rule of how much a player is allowed to play. I honestly don't recall when he became injured in that season. I want to say it was game four, but I am unsure. I believe a player is allowed to play in four games in one season and still get a medical red shirt, assuming there is proper documentation.

The end of a mystery wrapped in a riddle?? Let's hope so. Great news if true.

i'm due for a pick-me-up!
November 26th, 2012 at 1:08 PM ^
PLEASE let this happen. I posted this in another thread, but I'm hoping this happens and Shane red shirts next year. This must also be coupled with our current backup QBs developing and getting much better in case Devin has to miss some time, but even with a red shirt, Shane can still play in emergency situations. Obviously that would burn the red shirt, but they have to do what is necessary to win.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:08 PM ^
Wow, something even more positive. This would be great .

November 26th, 2012 at 1:15 PM ^
Even 2013 is looking bright. With the defense we have coming back for more and Devin's progression, I think M can win at least ten games, if not twelve (regular season).

I can't wait for this question to be answered once and for all...how many Discussion topics were directed towards this?
Still....Tight!
November 26th, 2012 at 1:13 PM ^
Good. I want an extra year of Devin making defenses look ridiculous.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:16 PM ^
On a related note, does anyone know how the word 'redshirt' came about? I know that quarterbacks usually wear a red colored jersey to indicate their 'don't hit status', but I wonder if incoming freshmen used to wear them as well back in the day to indicate their status.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:29 PM ^
You answered your own question. I believe redshirts were used by coaches during practice as an easy way to indicate which players would not be eligible for competition.
November 26th, 2012 at 2:25 PM ^
Warren Aflson from Nebraska was the first player to use it in 1937. Nebraska used White jerseys for the first team (starters/regulars) and Reds for the second team (scrimmage players).
November 26th, 2012 at 1:17 PM ^
Just imagine Devin playing in 2014 as a RS Sr with a Rs So Morris backing him up.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:21 PM ^
shane will only be a redshirt freshman in 2014
November 26th, 2012 at 2:47 PM ^
but I can't see Morris being a redshirt anything. We now know how having only two QB's prepared for games works after the Nebraska loss, I don't see this staff playing that game again. I think Morris is the number two QB on the depth chart next season.
November 26th, 2012 at 3:00 PM ^
You can still prepare a guy to play but keep him on the sideline. You always need two quarterbacks to play, because no quarterback takes every snap - whether it's because of injury, blowout wins, blowout losses, etc. But sometimes the third guy to play in a blowout can be a walk-on, like Jack Kennedy or Alex Swieca.
If Gardner gets his redshirt, there's really no reason to play Morris as a true freshman. You just make him the #3 QB and if a dire situation arises, you burn his redshirt.
November 26th, 2012 at 3:04 PM ^
Give Morris some practice reps so he can come in if needed, but don't burn his redshirt just to play him in garbage time.

Sure wish we would've seen that on 4th and short (and 3rd and short) on Saturday. Maybe it worked too well every time we ran it previously.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:20 PM ^
he's the best weapon we have, and in 2014, in his last regular season game, he doesn't end up watching from the bench because the coaches can't figure out how to get him onto the field.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:21 PM ^
Wrong thread, guy. This is a happy place.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:25 PM ^
i know, i realize that.
i'm just never going to be able to forgive the coaches for sending denard like that.
this thread, that thread, doesn't matter. the kid that took us out of the dark ages, both with his athletic talent and his attitude, sat and watched the 4th quarter of the biggest game of the year from the bench.
