OT - Danny Hope gone at Purdue
Not a huge surprise, but I expected another year given their bowl eligibility

Per the article, Dave Doeren from NIU might get a look, and for some reason, the "Tressel to all schools" came up at the end of this piece. Doeren would be interesting and this would be a "next level" job for him - he was the DC at Wisconsin and has led NIU to two straight 11-win seasons.

Doesn't JT have a show-cause for another few years? Maybe I'm wrong
November 25th, 2012 at 5:18 PM ^
until 2016 according to hammer and rails.
November 25th, 2012 at 6:00 PM ^
Also, he doesn't have a mustache (neither does Doeren), which is a must for the modern Purdue coach. As far as I know, Jerry Kill is the only viable option.
-Yay, another mustache joke.

Not a surprise. Not a big deal, but why is information about a B1G coach OT?
November 25th, 2012 at 4:30 PM ^
Probably just standard precaution with this crowd.
November 25th, 2012 at 4:48 PM ^
Glad you said it, and not me.

In their division Purdue finished a game behind Wisconsin and well back of Penn State and Ohio State. They lost by 3 at ND and took OSU to OT in Columbus.
This seems like a change for change's sake at a middle of the pack program. College football is a zero sum game (win or lose) and somebody has to finish in the middle of the standings. I don't see a coach making them better than the programs above them without finding the next Drew Brees, and that will be no easy task.

Maybe this is an instance of a Big Ten school burning through some of that BTN money that is pouring in. Why not take a stab at someone decent, instead of the same old promote from the MAC?
Of course, this being Purdue...they'll hire someone completely boring and unwhelming. One can hope though...
November 25th, 2012 at 4:50 PM ^
Purdue has won 53% of their games all time. The last two seasons Hope has won 52% of his games.
As an AD the choice is between admitting you are Purdue or acting like there is more hope without Hope. One of those choices probably helps you sell more tickets than the other.
November 25th, 2012 at 5:17 PM ^
that ever came out of the MAC.
November 25th, 2012 at 5:19 PM ^
The irony of a Michigan fan being derisive about hiring out of the MAC.
November 25th, 2012 at 5:24 PM ^
Brady Hoke, Randy Walker...yeah, all those crappy MAC coaches.

But you have to keep in mind, the coach before Hope - Joe Tiller - was much more successful, and not just when Brees was there. Tiller went 87-62 at Purdue and 53-43 in league play. Hope went 21-27 and 12-19, respectively. Their goal is obviously to find another Tiller. Hope seemed unlikely to be that guy.
November 25th, 2012 at 5:35 PM ^
I'm definitely not a Danny Hope fan, so I can see them wanting to go in another direction. I just think it is unlikely that they find another Tiller. He brought an offense nobody had really seen before, especially in the Big Ten (those first few games they played against ND were comical with the Irish having no idea how to defend bubble screens then getting burned over the top). And there isn't a lot of room to jump up in the standings except when PSU begins to feel the sanctions. Michigan, OSU, Wisconsin, MSU, and Nebraska are all stronger now and have more institutional advantages. They are already ahead of Iowa (could easily slip behind them), Illinois, and Indiana. On the recruiting trail, I think Pat Fitzgerald selling Northwestern academics probably has more to offer than new guy at Purdue, especially when you consider who they could actually get to take the job.
November 25th, 2012 at 5:44 PM ^
It's definitely not the easiest sell. They need to find a guy who can win without the greatest talent. Maybe Glen Mason wants another job?
November 25th, 2012 at 4:43 PM ^
I didn't know that our dear leader coached Purdue as well.

This opening has Darrell Hazell written all over it.
November 25th, 2012 at 4:26 PM ^
Does the Mustache stay and get passed on to the next coach, or are they expected to bring their own?
November 25th, 2012 at 4:29 PM ^
Its B.Y.O.M.
November 25th, 2012 at 4:27 PM ^
Maybe they should call Tim Beckman... He seemed ready for the big leagues. Oh wait, 2012 just happened...

Weird fact about the Purdue locker rooms: they're actually in a separate little building from the stadium. You leave the stadium to go in the locker room. That struck me as kind of small-timey.
November 25th, 2012 at 4:41 PM ^
They won't ever really compete in football. Same for Minnesota, Indiana, Rutgers, and Maryland.
November 25th, 2012 at 5:13 PM ^
I basically agree with that, but here's a list of Big Ten schools that have made it to the Final Four since Purdue's last trip there:
Michigan
Michigan State
Illinois
Wisconsin
Minnesota (*)
Indiana
Ohio State
- - -
AFAIK Nebraska, Northwestern, and Penn State have never been there. Iowa's last trip was 1980 (same as Purdue). 30+ years ago ...

Purdue was a b-ball regular season co-champ in 2010.
November 25th, 2012 at 5:46 PM ^
Rutgers and Maryland might. They don't have a lot of history, but they're the flagship schools of talent-rich states.

Bad hire in the first place. He wasn't very good at Eastern Kentucky.
November 25th, 2012 at 4:48 PM ^
Who does Purdue think they are?
November 25th, 2012 at 5:39 PM ^
in Indiana that has to compete with ND, NW, Ohio, IL, MI, MSU & IN for decent players. Moreover, they pay their HC squat & have little tradition. Yes, I want to be a Boilermaker!!
