They are ugly. The sad part is, I think the jersey top is really nice, and I really dig the number font. But the helmets and the pants are truely Turrible...

Helmets that should not be changed ever:
Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, Penn State, Nebraska, Ohio State (yes, even them) and Oklahoma.

USC, very plain with the colors and logo.

if I was an ND fan, that's just pathetic.....nobody better ever try to get cute with our helmet, pitch forks would ensue.

Wisconsin is so overdue for a new helmet. That lame W on white is sooooo beat... Kudos to Sparty for a massive upgrade back from the days of the White S on Green. Their helmets now are semi cool. Illinois could stand with new helms too. Their's are beat as well.

Don't know if you lived during the same 90's as I did, but she was pretty much considered a fashion icon during that decade. As eccentric as her style was, to say those hideous helmets are something that remind you of her tastes is either an incredible insult to her, or a huge compliment to the helmets.

...is that schools that pride themselves on tradition are going away from it. Though I do disdain Notre Dame, one of the coolest traditions in college football was that the students painted those gold helmets before every game. Since they've gone to their fancy gilded dome look, they've lost that. Just another small piece of tradition that's lost in favor of a little flash in the spotlight. OTOH - to hell with Notre Dame.

Just wait till Dave Brandon tries to do something stupid like this with the Michigan helmets.

I prefer No Country For Old Men.

With all the stupid/thoughtless things players put on twitter, it must be that the players are warned/threatened not to say anything about the ridiculous stuff they are made to wear, right?
I mean, otherwise how could none of the Wisconsin or Nebraska players have complained last week. Or any of the ND players comment this week?
Even so, it is kind of amazing that no one comments as to the stupidity of some of the uniform decisions

Along w/ U-M, Penn State, 'Bama and maybe a few others they are among the iconic, immiediately identifiable traditional unis. The shamrock on the helmet wasn't so bad, but tonight's are a kick in the nuts to their tradition.
October 6th, 2012 at 11:59 PM ^
I thought the shamrock in UTL was pretty cool. These 1/3 leprechaun things are the worst but I am a whore for semetrical helmets and design in general.

The gold looks better not TV than their normal "new" gold that has that ugly reflection on TV.
October 6th, 2012 at 9:07 PM ^
If you have ever said, "Dave Brandon and Adidas could never touch the wings, that is a tradition unlike any other and is too iconic to alter" I'm sure Notre Dame fans said the same thing. If it can happen to them, it can happen to us. "Oh, the shamrocks on the helmets weren't that bad," does that remind you of: "Oh, the numbers on the helmets weren't that bad"? Times are a-changing, my friends. Don't come crying when Michigan decides to invert the colors of the wings or overlay a big block M over the wings.

But I could definitely see them trying to split the helmet, half traditional...half maize with a blue block M (or blue with a maize block M).
If they do, I'm not sure Adidas would have a headquarters. Also, Coach Hoke would never allow it, EVER. Don't think Brandon would either.
October 6th, 2012 at 9:12 PM ^
I'm willing to put my integrity as a man on the line when I say that I don't believe that the winged helmet will ever be touched. We've seen numbers, we've seen grey facemasks. But the maize and blue winged helmet will be worn every game from now until the last game U of M plays, without taking a game off. Even Brandon understands that the WINGED HELMET is our brand.

If he does, Bo might very well come out of the grave and whack him in the ass with one of his infamous yardsticks. And Yost and Crisler will not be more than a step behind to do the same.

We are lucky in the sense that the winged helmet is flashy to begin with. The kids love it. Every year we get at least one recruit that comes for the helmets. We don't have to screw with it to create some flash for the 17 year old recruits.

ugliest helmets I've ever seen. That would be like us bastardizing the wings, you just shouldn't mess with one of your iconic football symbols

A leprechaun on one side, pot of gold on the other and room for a Lucky Charms ad down the middle. That might actually look better than this.

... a leprechaun holding a bottle of whisky. Would still be better.

they had a vote on what color helmets they wanted. 60% said gold 40% said navy and... voila!
