OT: Friday "What are You Listening To?" Thread

Submitted by icefins26 on

It's been awhile since we've had an off-topic music thread (and switching it up from the drinking threads), so here goes:

I'm on a huge Dawes, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Alabama Shakes kick.

What is everyone listening to on this fine Friday?

Cheers.

I love Protest The Hero! I haven't listened to much Animals as Leaders, although I keep hearing about them. I will have to check them out. I really like Mutiny Within as well. Not as well known, and they only have one album out, but it was really well done in my opinion.

I usually don't get to talk about music all that much since most of my friends cant stand the music I listen to. Oh well, I know this stuff isn't everyone's cup of tea.

I saw both All That Remains and As I Lay Dying when they toured together a few years ago. I almost didn't make it because I had a really bad fever at the time. I barely made it through the concert, but was glad I went. From what I remember, both All That Remains and As I Lay Dying put on a fantastic show.

This may be off-topic but you clearly have the best username and the best avatar on mgoblog IMO.

Baseball is one hundred and sixty two grueling games played in more than a dozen cities. Now, on the field we conserve our energy; on the road we conserve our food. Everywhere we go there's free food! Take a piece of cake for example. Now, I wrap it up in my vomit bag, I take it back to the hotel, put it on ice, and in the morning, vwala! Breakfast! Conservation, Henry! Managing resources! That is the key to baseball!

Beethoven's Symphony #9.

This is a relatively new development somebody suggested to me to improve the flow of my writing and I happened to have a stack of CDs from my grandpa when he passed away -- there's no words so it won't interrupt your train of thought, meanwhile the changing meter and flow of the composition will get in your head and you'll subconsciously match the rhythm of your writing to that.

Whenever you come across a paragraph I've written that flows like:

"POW-iamb-iamb-iamb-y, POW-iamb-iamb-iamb-y-POW-iamb-iamb--iamb-y, amby, amby POW "

...you can tell Ludwig has come up on the playlist again. When it's time to do an emphasis/punchline/reveal in the sentence, I go off the rhythm of the composition to jolt the reader to attention. This was at the crescendo of the 9th:

While I mean to eventually include
how teams played Michigan as well,
and I won't make the mistake of treat-
ing anything GERG did as canon

unless it involves hair product

This is how I studied throughout college. Though I had a slightly different angle. Complex instrumental music (and yes, the lack of human voice is key!) had the effect of silencing the ever-stirring chorus of ideation and allowed me to focus my attention on the concepts expressed in what I was reading. It also had the effect of providing constant, automatic cognitive stimulation. Very effective, indeed!

Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt has been on repeat today.  I'm only 22, so I didn't discover it until about 6-ish years ago, but damn is it a classic. Love it.
