It was/is driving me nuts.

12/04/2017 - 2:14pm Checking in . . .

A "Go Blue!" to all of the old faithful and a "thank you" to Brian and staff.

08/08/2017 - 3:53pm Blackburn

Also recall what was a huge conundrum when both Michigan's goalie and MSU's goalie were named Blackburn.   IIRC, we sharted a "JOEY - SIEVE" chant instead of Blackburn- Sieve. Good times.

08/08/2017 - 3:47pm Carrot?

Anyone recall the fan/parent(?) of an opposing team who brought in an actual carrot on a string and stick in an effort to "get back" at the jeers?  Am guessing it was in 98 or something like that.  Needless to say, it backfired.

06/02/2017 - 10:54am J Dilla

was a musical genius.  Not really a hot take, but whatevs.  RIP.

01/23/2017 - 9:04pm Seconded - The Earle

V good happy hour bar specials . . . .

Also was a big fan of Del Rio bar.  RIP.

08/09/2016 - 9:31am Late to party but . . .

Was flying out of DTW yesterday.  Lots of people lined up for missed flights.  Tried to get on an early flight to NYC (there were open seats and I had only carry on), but they would only put me on the flight if I paid $50 extra dollars per passenger(!).  I tried to explain that with all the chaos, it probably makes more sense to put me (and my family) on to clear room for later flights.  And to charge us $50 per person when there are plenty of open seats, and when Delta was gettting national press about a major screw-up, seemed not to be a great idea.  The gate agent was having none of it.  Sure enough - a later flight to NYC was cancelled and my flght was delayed 7 hours.  Lots of angry people.  Dumb gate agent.

05/26/2016 - 3:58pm Harold Reynolds

I can't speak to his color commentary, but I think that he is really good on MLB's Baseball Tonight show.

05/26/2016 - 3:56pm Joe Buck

Joe Buck - he just grates on me.  Too smarmy.

Chris Berman - I literally cannot take listening to him any longer.

Forgot another - Doug Flutie is pretty terrible (I don't even know if he is still in the business . . .)

02/01/2016 - 2:29pm Going to breakfast with my dad on State Street

before a football game when I was a kid (not sure of year - around 1985 or so).

Also - the Brenden Morrison OT goal in 1996 to win championship.

Beating OSU in 1996 in C'bus.

Rumeal Robinson sinking free throws in 1989 to win championship.

Getting autographs from players on the field after spring games (in 1980s) as a kid.

On LIRR.

01/19/2016 - 1:06pm Just Go With It

Seriously underrated film.

09/23/2015 - 1:24pm Forgot to add . . .

As a student who busted his butt doing odd jobs during the summer and school year to pay for extracurricular stuff (including football season tix), Brandon's comment that "mommy and daddy" pay for student football tickets as justification for jacking up prices was really, really infuriating.

And it seems like the guy who touted himself as the rags to riches son of a local egg farmer should have known better than to say something like that.

Man, that made me angry!

09/23/2015 - 12:50pm Non-Revenue Sport Coaches

Seemed like Brandon's seeming fixation on the Sears Trophy was a big problem.  Do we, as a university and fan base, really care if the tennis team, or volleyball teams don't do well for a few years?  Does that merit firing the coaches or chasing them away?  Particularly when many of the coaches had proven track records of winning.  As far as I'm concern, I expect excellence, or close to it, for Football, Men's Basketball, and Hockey.  For the rest of the sports, I just hope that we're relatively competitive in the league.  If a team is an absolute doormat for years and it impacts recruiting, then, fine, maybe make a coaching change.  But running what appear to have been (according to Bacon) fully capable and successful coaches out after a couple of lagging seasons seemed to be incredibly unfair and short-sighted.  It left the reader (ok, me) with the impression that the culture of "fear" was rampant in the athletic department.

09/11/2015 - 1:12pm Brooklyn Heights

Watching shit go down out of my apartment window.

Messed up day.  I initially believed there were foreign fighter jets attacking.

09/02/2015 - 12:49pm How starving am I for the start of the season?

I just watched the punting highlight reel.  The whole thing.

08/28/2015 - 11:48am Never posted this, but here's 2 emails that I got from Brandon

re skywriting.  I've redacted out my emails (I was polite, but expressed concern and embarassment as an alumnus), but here's how he explained the skywriting to me.  Enjoy . . .

Email 2 of 2

"[medals],

I looked into this matter....the incremental cost per message from our "skywriter" this past weekend was just under $100 per message.  We paid them under $5,000 for over 50 messages around the state.

So....welcome to my world.  I am not sure where you learned about "thousands of dollars"....but it wasn't a material amount of money.  Hopefully, this under $100 decision that was made in our marketing and events department won't negatively impact your view of our university.

Go Blue!

Dave"

"[medals],

I am sorry you are upset over a skywriting message over East Lansing....

I don't sign off on skywriters...but I will pass your concerns on to those who do.

The idea that it cost "thousands of dollars" to skywrite "Go Blue" over East Lansing sounds incorrect to me....but I will certainly look into it.

For your information, we don't use "university funds" for anything we do.  We are required to generate all of our own funds to support Michigan Athletics.  Consequently, our marketing budgets for game day events are very small and we try to get creative in order to excite our fans.

I know we had a skywriter performing all over Southeastern Michigan this past Saturday prior to our game....however, where they scrolled "Go Blue" was not something I know much about.

FYI....we do have a large number of Michigan Alumni and fans in Lansing....as well as other communities around Lansing and Ann Arbor.  So, if someone did suggest that they scroll a message there while doing all of their other messages around the area - I am sure there were people who were pleased with the message and had some fun with it.

Again, I am sorry this has created a big concern for you....if we ever hire a skywriter again we will consider your views carefully.

Good wishes and Go Blue!

Dave"

07/13/2015 - 6:17pm 90's student, so . . .

Football:  Woodson (head and sholders best player I've ever seen play at UM)

Bball:  Jalen (so much swagger)

Hockey:  John Madden (so much hustle, so many short handed goals)

05/12/2015 - 3:34pm I'm in the vast minority here . . .

But I was never a fan of Norfleet's actions between the whistles.  It came across to me (watching on tv . . .) as woofing and showboating.

He was an exciting player though.  Hope he lands on his feet.

04/28/2015 - 12:30pm Ale-8-One

Tried it recently on a business trip to Kentucky.  That stuff is intense.

I'd guess Rutgers is one.

I'll go out on a limb and guess Temple.

09/05/2014 - 4:20pm Congrats

I also have a daughter (now 4).  Speaking as a fan/dad, I've learned that it is fine to not watch games live, as I'd rather spend time with my daughter than watch the game (although I watch every second on replay).  That said, I now love night games because I can watch games live.

My daughter shuns M gear because, in her opinion, anything with words/logos on it is for "boys".  She was singing The Victors at an early age.  Let me tell you, having your kid sing the Victors is AWESOME.

Anyhow, as for advice - don't worry too much.  After the first week or so, you'll get the hang of it.

08/12/2014 - 3:09pm Thanks.

If the athletic dept. had included the Chicago ticket as a charge in the season ticket package, I would see it as a much, MUCH bigger problem.  I do sympathize with folks who were banking on seeing 2 home games at Yost against the Spartans.  Sucks.

08/12/2014 - 12:58pm Confused - honest question

Is the game in Chicago part of the season ticket package?

07/07/2014 - 12:20pm GO TEJAY!

No need to excuse/apologize for OT TDF coverage.  It is shaping up for a slow few weeks for UM sports and I, for one, welcome discussion here . . . .

06/27/2014 - 6:16pm A couple of ideas

If you are heading up I-75, maybe Bronner's near Frankenmuth - It is a gigantic xmas store open 365 days. Very kitchy.

Tony's is a truck stop restaurant/diner outside of Birch Run that serves gigantic portions of food.  It is pretty much just diner food, but ik kitchy is what you are after, and you are driving up I-75, I'd say stop in.

Soo Locks up in the UP

05/19/2014 - 3:52pm Conference Room Name (Let's not "Dave Brandon" this!)

I would suggest something classic/vanilla, like "Wolverine Conference Room".  Not flashy, but, IMHO, conference room naming at a charitable organization should not be flashy.

BTW - congrats to all of the money cannoneers!

04/08/2014 - 2:37pm Douby

02/07/2014 - 2:59pm Big J-Dilla Fan

There's a Dilla event out here in NYC (Brooklyn), too.  I'm glad that the Dilla Day thing is gaining some traction.  He was a musical genius.

LeBatard didn't sell his vote - he volunteered to vote as directed by Deadspin.

But to answer your question, I think that it was an interesting form of protest.  I was all for it.

11/11/2013 - 3:08pm You

win.

11/08/2013 - 4:26pm I once made the mistake

of reading the comments on a Detroit News article years ago.  Someone wrote "every buddy knows" to (presumably) mean "everybody knows".  I was horrified.

11/05/2013 - 2:02pm Hockey wierdness

Anyone recall the fan(parent?) of an opponent who showed up on the second night of a series at Yost with a carrot on a stick?  That was wierd and we made that known.  (BTW - This was probably the 98-99 season).
