Let's not make jokes about our recruit's name. We want him to come here. We do not want to make fun at his expense.
February 19th, 2012 at 4:35 PM ^
I'm sure he heard much worse (and more clever) jokes about his name by the time he was in third or fourth grade. I'm sure he doesn't really care or has fun with it himself now. He's a big boy.
February 19th, 2012 at 6:59 PM ^
We're hoping to be his future fans. We're not hazing the kid. We don't need to do anything that could make him feel unwelcome.
February 19th, 2012 at 4:34 PM ^
I honestly can't wait for Sam Webb's Recruiting Roundup tomorrow morning, he won't be able to breakdown half of this weekend's commits with the 15 minutes he usually has for the segment. It will turn into the Recruiting Hour

This is just getting too awesome.
When do we get that first 2014 guy?
February 19th, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
So, Jake is taking his time and the board seems intent on working with some creative plays on his name so I thought I would share this lesser-used definition.

I am really bored watching this Heat-Magic game and the Wisky-PSU game is boring too so please commit soon Jake so I have something to read and get excited about.

Just looking through Rivals and I am astonished to see how many rivals 250 kids from Ohio that have not been offered by them. Is Urban Meyer that arrogant that he believes these kids are not good enough for them? I don't get it. He wants that Essss Eeeee Ceee speed.
February 19th, 2012 at 6:00 PM ^
Probably assuming that he doesn't have to offer them yet because he has the advantage of most of them being OSU fans. He believes that he can sweep in with an offer later in the process if someone he wants more goes elsewhere, and still get a commitment. He's probably right with that strategy as well, though one or two might get away that he had wanted.
Some people thought Hoke shouldn't have offered Dawson, Hill, or Shallman until other higher targets had gone elsewhere. And last year Michigan was able to snag Norfleet at the very end because they had a spot open. Will Michigan have to turn away Pocic or LTT because Dawson took one of their spots? I think both methods have their benefits, and I'm sure there are other players in the state who Michigan might offer much later if other targets end up elsewhere.
Also, there may be more prostyle players who Ohio won't persue anymore due to the spread. Ohio always produces more talent than OSU can take, they have the benefit of being picky. And clearly Meyer is very picky with who he considers acceptable.
February 19th, 2012 at 6:11 PM ^
I think Hoke knows exactly what he is doing. He is doing exactly what Jeff Hecklinski says we do: recruit Michigan first. You don't wait to offer a 4-star in-state offensive lineman (a position of need) because we MAY grab a few players of higher caliber.
A 4-star offensive lineman in your class is worth two 4-star offensive linemen in the bush... or something.
February 19th, 2012 at 6:38 PM ^
Although it is true that a commit is better than a prospect, I think you are underestimating the returns on recruiting players who have higher ceilings than other kids do. Sometimes grabbing kids to early can lead to missing the boat on higher ranked prospects. I don't really know exactly what the extent of such a risk is, but identifying guys who fit your system and jumping on players that you really want before others who you know you can afford to miss out on or grab later is critical in recruiting. Ohio is off to a great start recruiting also and seem to be snagging top ranked kids from all over the country (thinking of the CB from NJ). Not every Rivals 250 kid is going to end up at Ohio (they generally would lack space) and sometimes they might miss out on a guy (ie Joe Bolden). Urban has already shown they he can recruit as he compiled a superior (ranked) class to ours in a month or two. It would seem that he knows what he is doing, especially as several Ohio kids like Dodson and Pittman jumped back into the fold after being committed to other schools for months (disclaimer on Pittman inserted here).
Also, according to your logic we should have offered Resche and not allow him to be swept up into MSU's fold so easily because we think we can land a couple of higher ranked LB recruits like Levenberry or Hutchings. Resche was a 4 star LB from Michigan so Hoke is already departing from his strategy. Sometimes you wait on guys while you see if you can land a bigger fish. I trust Hoke, but Urban has shown some prowess and I think it would be remiss to label his strategy as inferior or stupid til we really know the returns.

February 19th, 2012 at 7:08 PM ^
I think he just meant it sarcastically.
February 19th, 2012 at 7:23 PM ^
Reschke is not at a position of need in this class. There's risk in everything. If the coaches knew would who commit they could adopt a perfect strategy. At positions with the greatest need, in this class that's OL, TE and WR, you generally cast a wider net. People made some of the same complaints with regard to the 2012 class. I'm not sure we missed out on anybody because we took players the coaches didn't think as highly of early. I, for one, am glad that didn't leave more spots open for those late decisions.
February 19th, 2012 at 6:18 PM ^
If he wants to keep loading us up with Rivals 250 players from his own state, that will eventually backfire on him. I trust Hoke, Mattison, and Borges's talent evaluations more than Urban Meyers, especially witnessing how bad Florida has been underperforming lately.
February 19th, 2012 at 6:26 PM ^
It's a slightly different game for Michigan than Ohio too. In Ohio they're the only game in town, whereas not only do we have a smaller school but we are sometimes competing with Michigan St for players. The last thing you want is for a talented guy that you may want in the future to get high on State and for you to never have a chance at him because you wanted some national guy that you never really had a shot at.
February 19th, 2012 at 7:10 PM ^
I thought Dawson was projected inside, even an small chance he ends up at center, while Pocic & LTT were projected more outside. If so, I don't see the problem here.
Also, you do realize what Dawson's offer list is, right? You talk about him like he is a lesser recruit.
February 19th, 2012 at 7:17 PM ^
Good point. Both Dawson and Shallman are kids you take anytime you can get them. As for Hill, his film looks pretty good and I'm trusting the staff. Glad they are not waiting around, but being aggressive. We still have plenty of room for "higher" ranked targets, but remember they are also the toughest to land.
February 19th, 2012 at 6:19 PM ^
I'd ba amazed if Ohio doesn't snap up large swaths of in-state talent, but as we've seen the past couple of years in Florida he had a penchant for nabbing a couple of big-name kids each year while not always recruiting the type of depth (or at least retaining it) that you'd expect for a top-notch program. My sense is that he'll come in late and grab a number of these kids, but he is also an arrogant guy who wants to recruit the south more than his predecessor. That should nab him some really talented players, but can also lead to more "misses" and scrambling at the end.
February 19th, 2012 at 6:32 PM ^
He may make a late push for a lot of these talented kids, after the ones that he has offered all commit to Alabama, hopefully these kids dont like feeling like 2nd best.
February 19th, 2012 at 7:26 PM ^
I have a feeling he might have a little more trouble than he's expecting getting kids from Florida to come up to Ohio. I live there now and I can't wait to get out. Some spread type kids will like him obviously but I think he's going to have a little more trouble getting defensive guys up here that he would have gotten at Florida. I think he's making a big mistake ignoring his own talent rich state early in the process, but as others have said, the jury's still out.

February 19th, 2012 at 6:25 PM ^
could we know that some recruit (who in other times we wouldn't have even heard of until we read about his commitment in the papers) was waiting on his MOM to come home. Everything is public knowledge these days.
/get off my yard.
But seriously, I love that this kid is doing things the right way, and love that he's obviously excited to go blue.

Hey Blue, just an FYI, I'm in South Bend as well...nothing like living in enemy territory eh?
February 19th, 2012 at 6:53 PM ^
I got out of Greater Michiana in August... though I did end up in Lansing/East Lansing. South Bend is far from great, but winning 3 straight against ND made life a little easier.
February 19th, 2012 at 7:00 PM ^
Don't I know it. Where I work, it is all pro-ND, and the company owners are all rabid Irish fans. I used to jog the campus at night in my Michigan Basketball jersey...I accidently ran through a pep rally and it didn't end well. Since it relies on great Irish season to survive, SB hasen't been looking that great recently. It is nice to get the boys together and throw one hell o0f a Big Blue bash in their own parking lot tho
February 19th, 2012 at 6:28 PM ^

Well, when you lose three recruiting battles in a day, you have to tell yourself something. Especially since Michigan is also racking up the guys, like Bolden and Williams, that Ohio traditionally would scoop up late in the season when they'd proven themselves worth it.
These huys don't have offers because Ohio hasn't figured out they have to fight for their recruits again.
