OT: Urban Meyer issues
As all the Urban Meyer speculation came down today, I couldn't help but actually worry about his physical health. To step down from a job as good as Florida, he had to have realized that his health wasn't great. When it comes to problems with the heart, things really don't change that much in a year. I'm no expert, but having watched my Father work for years to improve his heart health, I have seen the work it takes.
The stress the SEC can put on a coach is terrible, that's a certainty. While tsio is not in the SEC, their fan base is equally as demanding, and a great deal more vicious in dealing with a loss. The pressure on him will be the same as it was in Florida, and the added pressure of the sanctions certainly will weigh heavily on him. While it certainly appears that he will eventually take the job, one has to wonder if it's the right decision for him. As a football fan who respects his body of work, I would like to see him take more time off to get his heart right. That has absolutely nothing to do with my fear as a Michigan fan, for him taking the job at tsio. Truth be told, I don't think it would be the match made in heaven most buckeye fans anticipate it being. That being said, I think it would be a disaster, and the toll it would take on Urban wouldn't be worth anything they could offer him.
Don't do it, Urban, it's not worth it.

I don't think I've ever heard that rumor
November 19th, 2011 at 8:00 PM ^
...but when I type "Urban Meyer a" into a google search one of the recommended searches is "Urban Meyer affair 23 year old coed".
It's obviously out there, true or not.

November 19th, 2011 at 8:36 PM ^
I've never heard it either but I don't find it the least bit surprising.
November 19th, 2011 at 10:24 PM ^
Um, don't you think that they would find a way to have the 23 year old grad assistant leave instead of the National Championship winning head coach?
Hell, it would not even have to be anything sinister. Have some booster give her a dream job that is too good to refuse.
November 20th, 2011 at 12:26 AM ^
It makes no sense, actually.
That's not the only girl in the country that Meyer can bang. I doubt his wife demanded that he quit that job specifically to get away from ONE girl and her magical poon. I'm sure if UF knew this one affair would cost them Meyer, the girl would have been flown out of town with daily postcards to show Mrs. Meyer she was on the opposite side of the world.
The idea that he had to leave Florida because of it but is now free to go somewhere else is beyond ludicrous.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:30 PM ^
badmouthed Denard most of the broadcast. Not cool.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:37 PM ^
It was ridiculous! Meyer kept going on and on for the entire next drive after the interception on the screen about how it was unnacceptable to throw that many interceptions, and that if he was the coach he would bench Denard. Meanwhile, Denard was busy driving down the field for a touchdown. Give me a break! Denard played a great game, IMHO.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:40 PM ^
If you had told the guy to come play corner while handing the keys to your program to John Brantley, you might want to justify that dumbass decision in your own mind as well.
November 19th, 2011 at 8:58 PM ^
I guess he's bitter that Denard didn't want to play there... Or he hates dilithium and dreads.
November 19th, 2011 at 8:15 PM ^
I think he was making a point that revealed his coaching style - and nothing more. You make a mistake while playing for him, you sit.
By playing Denard, Hoke was showing his style, which seems to be to say, "We believe in you. Keep going, you'll be fine." Positive reinforcement.
I know which coach I'd rather play for.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:31 PM ^
OSU. You want Urban Meyer as coach. Fine. Bring it. I ain't afraid of him or anyone he puts on his staff.
November 19th, 2011 at 8:46 PM ^
I think this is the way to approach it if Meyer is indeed hired. Michigan now has an elite coaching staff and I am confident that sooner rather than later they will be able to play with anyone in the country (Alabama and LSU included). Plus Meyer would at least make OSU good enough so that The Game would be back to getting great national attention. This would make the B1G and Michigan stronger.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:31 PM ^
I am at a complete loss for why Urban would retire from coaching at Florida (where things were going pretty well recruiting and on the field) to take a job at Ohio only a year later, with NCAA sanctions looming. It makes zero sense.

- See JClay post above.
- Visit Columbus.
- Draw obvious conclusion.

With all the shit that probably got covered up at florida during the urban meyer years, i'd be shocked if they couldn't cover up a few dead hookers. craig james did.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:38 PM ^
Florida went 8-5 last year. They just beat the mighty Furman Whateverthefuckthey'recalleds (in a game that was 37-32 going into the 4th quarter) to improve to 6-5 this year. It is quite possible Meyer realized he wasn't going to have anywhere close to the team he had in the Leak/Tebow years any time in the near future.
And sanctions aside, now wouldn't be a bad time to take the OSU job (less pressure following crappy season, buffer between you and Tressel, and sanctions/scandal as an excuse for any short term troubles).
I don't think it is going to happen, but it isn't the craziest move in the world.
November 20th, 2011 at 12:51 AM ^
"It is quite possible Meyer realized he wasn't going to have anywhere close to the team he had in the Leak/Tebow years any time in the near future."
Hm, I wonder why he would think that? Acording to Rivals, Florida had the #12 class for 2011, #2 class for 2010, #11 for 2009, #3 for 2008 , and #1 for 2007. Surely there are some studs in those crops to field a good team.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:31 PM ^
I dont care about the man and have no concern about his health either way. I also think that he is just a football coach, and that is all. I have no fear of Meyer going to the buckeyes.
I only fear that he and Spewman are allowed to call The Game next week....that will be another horrible and unbearable experience if they are.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:39 PM ^
Turn off the ESPN commentary or listen to Beckmann and Brandstatter. Meyer and Speilman are just OSU trolls. Really, its sickening to listen to them. I can't wait to beat the fuck out of OSU next weekend and see how those hopeless homers spin it positive.
November 19th, 2011 at 10:31 PM ^
Herbie and Muss are no better. Our options are not good here. Just plug your ears and watch the victory.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:34 PM ^
I think Meyer left because he was afraid that the competition would tarnish his legacy. He wasn't going to beat LSU or Alabama with Florida's current roster, especially with Miles and Saban playing dirty. I think he is overrated as a coach.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:50 PM ^
A guy with 2 National Championships in 5 years being called overrated....

November 19th, 2011 at 7:36 PM ^
Bourbon Meyer is prolly gonna coach at Ohio. MICH is undefeated against Bourbon. Logically we can expect that trend to continue.
November 19th, 2011 at 8:04 PM ^
Mr. Meyer's name is name is "Urban." Urban.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:39 PM ^
I don't think there is any way he takes the job, with the burden of having to follow Jim Tressell, and the threat of serious NCAA sanctions. Penn State would be a more attractive option, it would seem to me.
What gets me is the timing of this: why in the world was tOSU conducting meetings with Meyer, with two big games left on the schedule, and no real threat that Meyer is going anywhere else until after the season? The only thing that makes sense is that Penn State may have been doing the same.
[Edit: ESPN article suggests Penn State is starting a search... http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7256032/penn-state-ad-fo… ]
November 19th, 2011 at 7:43 PM ^
use the practices to start installing his offense, and we can probably beat whichever MAC team we face in the toilet bowl even with a brand new playbook. Hell, using an actual playbook would be a big step forward from what OSU is doing now; Bollman uses his flippers to throw walrus dung at a 360 controller and calls whatever play results.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:53 PM ^
before he himself gets canned as a final OSU penance to the NCAA.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:37 PM ^
It would be a failure as well, but I don't want to see the tsio job kill him.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:38 PM ^
OSU is starting to see winning with out cheating and having booster pay for kids to go to school isn't that easy! Urban is dirty so he fits in well there!
November 19th, 2011 at 7:48 PM ^
To be fair, Florida with Urban Meyer was one of the only SEC schools that actively spoke out against a lot of the dirtier practices in the SEC.
That said, a lot of his players got arrested.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:39 PM ^
He is happy with his family and has not spoke to OSU. Maybe he is LYING. Perfect for ohlio. Go red and silver!
November 19th, 2011 at 7:42 PM ^
My issue is that a program crippled by scandal is going to hire a coach whose previous team had 40+ arrests in three years.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:48 PM ^
Yes, they do seem to be preparing for precisely that possibility.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:50 PM ^
It means you have previous experience in handling difficult management situations.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:43 PM ^
Actually, he revealed that "health problems" were esophageal spasms. It's a stress related condition that causes intense chest pain, but is completely benign. There is no risk to returning to coaching other than dealing with the annoyance of having them.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:47 PM ^
....then that's OK. I feel confident we could beat a Meyer-coached OSU too.
November 19th, 2011 at 7:49 PM ^
November 19th, 2011 at 7:49 PM ^
Why is it that only broadcasters with OSU ties are allowed to work the Michigan games? ESPN really does hate the Wolverines!!
November 19th, 2011 at 8:00 PM ^
Nobody wants to beleive that Michigan Football is back
November 19th, 2011 at 7:52 PM ^
Meyer coached at OSU, is from Ohio and has his Master's Degree in Sports Admin from OSU.
But I agree that following Tressel, upcoming sanctions and scholarship losses and a far more disagreeable fanbase than he's ever encountered at BSGU, Utah and Florida, I can see Meyer taking a miss on the whole damn thing. They're paying him big bucks to be on ESPN right now too. No pressure.
Meyer would make a nice fit at Ohio. So would Mike Leach.
November 19th, 2011 at 8:06 PM ^
You're kidding, right?
November 19th, 2011 at 8:10 PM ^
If there was ever a team that needed to be locked in a closet for a few hours, it is the Buckeyes.
November 19th, 2011 at 9:10 PM ^
I know you're joking but for those who don't know, he didn't lock anyone is a closet or do anything wrong at all actually. The player has said that he made everything up...

November 19th, 2011 at 10:15 PM ^
He also has issues that make him almost unemployable, and I'm not talking about the James crap. There are reasons he wasn't getting interviews even when he was on top of the world at Tech.
